Thanks to sleepingbooty some of us on the GS side have been made aware of an awesome podcast called 'The Dream'. It's about MLMs and it's addicting. 8 episodes have come out so far. Can't wait to hear more. "Marie and her producer had, like many people, noticed her Facebook feed filling up with friends from high school selling leggings, or makeup, or handbags, asking their friends to buy them and sign up as salesmen themselves. They’re all participating in multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes, which anyone involved will tell you are not a pyramid scheme, because pyramid schemes are illegal. “That doesn’t mean it’s not one,” Marie, a veteran of This American Life, said in a recent phone call. “That means it hasn’t been prosecuted.”" www.vanityfair.com/style/2018/09/the-dream-podcast-preview

Pyramid cheer for the podcast exposing MLM!
Glad to have introduced this podcast to my fellow Peas. The MLM world is dominated by women so it's important to get the info out to women-dominated spheres.

I was on that thread and jumped to the podcast right away. It is well produced and very interesting. If found the involvement of Republican leaders and the Devos family particularly eyebrow-raising!

Yes!! I found it on the previous thread and listened to all episodes in two days. I can't wait for the next episode. This week's episode was so sad. Hearing all the people's struggle stories and to know they were just being robbed blind.

The thing about MLM is that every person who thinks they can get wealthy this way and end up losing everything fail to ask themselves why if it's such a good idea isn't everyone doing it? In the 16th century Thomas Tusser said, "A fool and his money are soon parted." "Get Rich quick" schemes have been around for centuries.

The antiMLM subreddit is one of my faves but oh my, it's a rabbit hole. Every time I visit, I get sucked in for a good hour... ETA: The horror story of the nurse who came in there to warn people that the essential oil MLM-ers were putting oils in the medical breathing devices for the elderly to help "clear" their lungs during the crazy Utah fires this summer still haunts me...
And yes, these (mostly) women have lost their social compass because they use any opportunity to sell. And they're being told by their recrutor to use every opportunity to sell. I fear for their mindset and am not surprised many entering a new MLM scheme have been through at least one before (and lost money).

Thanks!

You can download or stream. Some are available on their websites not sure about this one. I use Podcast Republic (free) to listen. If you subscribe to a podcast you can set up notifications or to download automatically when there is a new episode.

When I held a McMillan coffee morning in aid of cancer support at the end of September, I was looking for some tips on YouTube. I found this video of a woman advising all her underlings to use these widely known charity events to boost their personal sales. Shameless:( youtu.be/2Prx9957RWI

This podcast is very, very good. It includes information I've never seen anywhere else - not just the same regurgitation of "99% of people lose money," which is true, but most people tune out when hearing the same info repeated. The history and the lawsuits that explain how MLMs get away with being pyramid schemes in disguise is really fascinating stuff.
The sad thing is, a lot of people think "Oh, that doesn't apply to MY COMPANY!" "Well, that's LimeLight, my company Pamepered Chef doesn't require a minimum purchase." "Well, that's Lularoe, my company Pure Romance doesn't require a multi-thousand dollar buy-in." "Well, that's Herbalife, my company Beachbody doesn't encourage us to open store fronts."
Alert: Yes, #youtoo. Your MLM company sucks. Your MLM company is predatory. They all put their own little spin on it, which you'll learn about if you listen to The Dream, but they ALL set up a structure where the top of the pyramid wins at the expense of tens and hundreds of thousands of people below them. They ALL have a business model that is entirely unsustainable if you can do basic math - if everyone recruited just a few people, they'd more than cover the population of the earth in like 12 levels. They ALL are overpriced, because YOU are the consumer as the "consultant" and then it has to be marked up even more to your buyers. They ALL have more than 95% (and that's being conservative) of "consultants" losing money. They ALL give the same song and dance about people signing up for the discount, not to actually be reps, so that's why they use "creative" accounting when providing success rates.
If you're making real money off an MLM, it's not because you're a #BossBabe or because you "hustled" more than other people. You are literally standing on the backs of people lower than you in the pyramid. I know you feel like you did real work to get where you can, and you think others can too, but they can't. It's a scam. You're feeding a scam.

I'm all caught up with it too and SO want to recommend it to my coworkers, several of whom are involved with these companies or have spouses who are. I can't think of a diplomatic way to do it. I hate seeing people taken advantage of in this way. I have noticed though, that most of the people who had been pushing products on my Facebook feed (that I didn't just hide out of annoyance) have gone silent or have moved on to traditional jobs.

And even one of my two co hosts for the coffee morning attempted to bring her thermomix with her to make lemonade for everyone. Guess what - she’s a thermomix advisor and was trying to use the event to network. I posted a thread here about it. Deplorable indeed. Our friendship has since cooled.

Interestingly enough, I just posted a link to an article about it on my Facebook page with a brief "hey podcast listening friends, this is a fascinating exploration of pyramid schemes, MLMs and the role of women in them". No replies on my post, but I'm suddenly getting personal messages along the lines of "this is a terrible reminder of (name)'s experience with (company)".

I'm not going to but you guys know I want to tag a few certain people.
If you're reading this and think it doesn't apply to your "opportunity," you are exactly who needs to listen with a truly open mind.

I just became a consultant for a company and am under no illusion about getting rich. I just joined because I like the product and am thinking why not make a little extra money and get my items at a discount? We all promote products all the time anyway. KWIM?
