We received the following two invitations and I was wondering what you would wear to these events. The events have already taken place and we apparently had different interpretations of the dress code than the other party goers. I will tell you in a bit what we wore to each event.
First invite: 50th Birthday Party. Casino Theme. Casino tables set up for all to enjoy. Signature cocktail served. Catered meal. DH and I attended. No stated dress code - what would you wear?
Second invite: Sweet 16 birthday. Son was invited. Dressy causal is the dress code. What would you have your son wear?

Invite one - I would wear a little black dress, heels and nice jewelry.
edited to add: I would wear the above if it was at a rented location. If its at home, probably slacks and a nice shirt.
Invite two - Probably khaki slacks and a button up shirt with the sleeves rolled. Or MAYBE with dressy jeans with shirt that the sleeves were rolled.

First one, I'd wear a tuxedo style suit with sparkly vest style top underneath (I don't do dresses) with heels.
Second one, whatever he feels comfortable in. I see no need to dress a 16 year old boy in something that's my taste, not his. Disclaimer - as long as it's clean, presentable and not his underwear.

Or black pants and a top with some bling. Shoes as if I were going to be on my feet a lot. 16th: pants that aren’t jeans, and a polo or button down shirt. I wouldn’t over complicate either one because neither one sounds super formal to me.

What would you have your son wear? #1 - A cute dress, not necessarily black but dressy or a newer style of pant-suit or tuxedo pant suit for ladies. DH would were a button down shirt with a tie and dress pants. #2 - Newer Jeans or khaki slacks and a button up shirt or a dressier knit polo shirt. This depends on what "dressy causal" is within his age group.

Okay, thank you all so much for your answers. They are all on track with what we thought as well.
50th Party - I wore a new black dress with ruffled 3/4 length sleeves and the neckline had tiny crystals on it, black hose(!) and low heeled black pumps. DH wore a black suit, white button down and red tie.
Every one of the 50+ guests wore jeans or khakis! We walked in and I swear all eyes were upon us. It felt like we had walked into the wrong party. We ended up having a great time because we love the hosts and their friends. However, we had also been invited to a "Sinatra" themed 50th party for the same night but had declined because the casino party invite came first. We decided to stop in at that party later in the night because we knew for sure we were dressed correctly for that one. Both parties were tons of fun.
16th party - Son wore khakis, dress shirt, cashmere sweater and dress shoes. Well, every boy we saw gong in as we dropped DS off was wearing a suit! DS was of course fine with what he had on and didn't care that other boys were more dressy, but I said to DH, "How did we get it wrong again?" It turned out that other boys showed up later dressed similar to DS and all was fine. Good time was had by all.
Thank you all for your answers!

@shanniebananie look at you go girl. With no advice from the peas, you nailed it. Clearly the other party attendees do not have peas in their life.

Where I live it would have been jeans and a nice top for both events.

What did the hosts of the casino party wear 🤔. Sounds fancier than jeans to me, but are they “fancy” kind of folks?

We have been to several weddings and fancy parties together. The host was in jeans and a sweater and she had on dressy jeans and a tunic shirt. It was so weird that we were the only ones that interpreted "casino" as dressy.

#1 - we would probably wear jeans and a sweater or nice shirt #2 - khakis, oxford and tie. He could take the tie off later if no one else was wearing one.

I think the outfits your family chose for both occasions were right on point. I'm also a believer that it's better to be slightly overdressed for an occasion than under-dressed (thanks grandmother).
For my son's recent wedding, I fielded a lot of phone calls clarifying the expected dress for the rehearsal dinner as well as the wedding & reception. I didn't mind at all, because I understood that people just wanted to feel like they had chosen appropriately. So, I suppose my advice is... when in doubt, call your host and ask.
