Re: Daughter wants a Cricut or Silhouette...
Choice has been made but with one more question. She chose the Silhouette based on all of your thoughts. Which Silhouette would be better for her; the Cameo 2 or 3? She's a school teacher and would be using it mostly for things for school if that matters. Thank you all for helping with this.

I would always opt for the newer version unless there is a significant price difference. I’ve been burned by technology before where the older version isn’t supported (yes, Provocraft, I’m looking at you).
I don’t care about having the newest phone, but I expect my cutting machine to last a loooong time and hope it will be supported.

I am still using the ORIGINAL one. Lol. What's that, 12 yrs old? lol.
Wait for the black Friday deals.

Cameo 3! I heard silhouette is working on a new cutter that may be a wider format. Last October I paid $187 delivered from HSN. I than bought a 12x24 mat to cut larger designs. Still under $200.

I would go for the 3, says the person who still uses a Portrait. LOL!
I think I read that a 4 will be coming out soon, maybe for the Christmas season. (If so they better get a move on.) If the 4 does come out soon, I believe the 3 will be discounted. Edited because I can't find the article I was referring to.

This is another great thing about the Silhouette machines - so far no machine has ever been made obsolete! I have the original Cameo from 2012. It uses the exact same software that the Cameo 3 uses. You can even use the Silhouette SD or even the very old Craft Robo machines with the current Silhouette software, blades, and mats! Cricut does not do this... I heard silhouette is working on a new cutter that may be a wider format. I have heard just the opposite. They are concentrating on their new 3D printer and no new machines designs are in the works. A wider Silhouette cutter would be super popular though!

I remember the article saying they usually release a new product every two years and the 3 was released in 2016. Maybe the new machine is the 3D machine.

I have the 2 and am very happy with it but the 3 has other features like Bluetooth and auto blade. Wait for Black Friday deals to see what she can get.

I’d vote for the 3, but I want to upgrade to get the WiFi capabilities. But if she’s using it in a school, I’m not sure if the WiFi will be strong enough to maintain the cutting speed.
If there is little price difference, I’d go for the 3. The newer technology is always preferred. I would DEFINITELY go with the Cameo vs the Portrait for the wider cutting capability. I use mine for school a lot and almost always use the wider format or load more smaller items onto the larger page. I haven’t heard about a 4 coming out. I think they are working on a wider (15”?) format, but the price point seems to jump up. At least that’s what the survey I took from Silhouette indicated. And there was a 3D printer that just came out a few months ago.

Mine connected to my computer one time and the computer was RIGHT next to it. It’s much faster and more reliable to use USB.

Has anyone heard of silhouettes on the black friday list? There are sure to be sales out there, as there’s been a sale on most sites that sells them for at least the last 6-7 years. Probably more. Silhouette America will have its own sales, which are usually bundles. I bought my Cameo 1 in 2012 from amazon on a BF sale. They are out there! Watch the scrapping threads—Peas will put up the bargains.

I still have the craft-robo. That one came out before the silhouettes or the cameo. I also had the original cricut, but gave it to a daughter when the wide format came out. I didn't upgrade after that because now I'm mostly a digital scrapper.

I keep looking and only see regular sales, not black friday sales. It's weird because whenever I'm searching for a particular item, for like a month ads for that item will show up on my FB page and in emails etc. Searching for the Silhouette has not done that at all ! It's frustrating to have to go from site to site looking at prices. There are sure to be sales out there, as there’s been a sale on most sites that sells them for at least the last 6-7 years. I hands down prefer to use Sure Cuts A Lot with my cameo. The studio software is super basic, the upgraded software isn’t much better IMO. SCAL is around $80 not on sale. It works with pretty much all cutters (I also have a wide format MH 871 that will do 28” wide) except for Cricut.

Designer Edition upgrades the software that comes with the silhouette and allows you to create your own images or use images from the web etc instead of just purchased from Silhouette. Don't buy it directly from silhouette

Do you mind giving me a quick rundown on what or why Sure Cuts a Lot is better than Designer Edition? I've googled but so much of what I find is way outdated. I use Inkscape to covert SVG files. I would like to make some of my own shapes in the future and wondered how well SCAL works. I'd appreciate an opinion from a pea.

I never had much luck with inkscape. Another reason is that scal has much better support than silhouette from what I've read. I think craftvinyl.com has the best price for scal. eta: never mind-they sell ssde only.

It also allows for easily importing/tracing/whatever. I'm still learning quite a bit of what it can do. I am by no means a power user but really like the interface compared to studio. To me, studio feels clunky and not very user friendly. I like that I can easily scale and size stuff. I can edit things fairly quickly as well. There's a few facebook groups that are awesome for support with SCAL. You can go on there and ask about the comparisons. People are really friendly in the groups I'm in. This is one I go to all the time... www.facebook.com/Sure-Cuts-A-Lot-106996399332239/
