I can't help but think they will only catch a handful of people and tomorrow a new set of people will do the same thing and the lesson isn't learned. It looks like her house is on a major freeway? She needs a more permanent solution, speed bumps, change the speed limit, children crossing signage. Or maybe her kid needs to be dropped off on the back side of her house. That's a strange location for a home, not even a fence in case of a car collision or drunk driver that could drive up on her lawn.

Good for her!!! It's just so scary seeing what people do through school zones. Heck it's scary how people drive nowadays anyway. Speeding through school zones and not stopping is what my daughter likes to watch for on dayshift. She sits in the school zone every morning, and she gets people going 15-20+ over routinely. It is SO very sad. She just went back to night shift, and she said "Darn, now I can't work my school zone for a while."

Cars should stop for school buses with flashing red lights - no matter what - but that school bus stop has no business being there. US 19 is practically a highway with a 50 mph speed limit and lights every so often. The bus stops in a turning lane - move it to around the corner to make it safer for everyone.

The article said she was concerned for her friend’s kid. Regardless, you’re not supposed to pass a bus in that situation. I’m betting that video goes all over fb in her town. People will start paying attention. ETA I agree it doesn’t look like an ideal place for a bus stop.

Here if you are in the left lane ( on a 4 lane) you can pass the bus. I can’t do it, I can’t even pass the bus if I am in the opposite lanes. I slow down or I pull off until the bus goes.
I just don’t get why people feel the need to pass a school bus.

In Providence, RI last spring (I think), they instituted automated camera speeding tickets in some school zones. It was set for 20 mph over the limit, and they caught 900 cars in about a week.
People just don't give a crap about school safety.

It is ridiculous how stupid and selfish people can be around school buses. Just last week my son's bus was hit from behind because they didn't see it stop. Thank God no one was hurt, but the students on the bus all had to wait for the police to come and apparently they were all questioned. This is a special needs bus, so you can imagine how scared the kids were.

I go through 2 school zones on my way to work - and every day there are people who try and speed through them, thankfully most people do slow down, and they "trap" others in the line so they can't speed.

In our area there are a lot of highways and houses lined up on both sides. Totally normal here to live right on the highway with no fence or anything. 3 kids were killed near here recently by someone who didn't stop for the bus.

People drive like crazed monkeys on 19. That a school bus would actually stop on that road to load/unload children is insane to me. While ignorant drivers definitely need to be penalized and re-educated for not stopping for school buses, a safer stop absolutely needs to be addressed.

I was nearly rear-ended this week when I stopped for the school bus. The jerk who almost hit me swerved around me. And then drove right past me and the bus with the STOP sign out and all the lights ablaze. Dumbass.

Yep, my mother lives about 20 minutes south of where the video was taken. Her development lets out onto 19 but she has a maze of side exits and back roads so she can avoid driving on 19 unless absolutely necessary. And my husband and I almost got into what I am positive would have been a fatal accident. We were approaching a red light so DH was starting to slow down - we were still going fast as we had plenty of time to stop - when all of a sudden someone makes a left right in front of us. If DH didn't already have his foot over the break, there was no way we could have slowed down enough to not hit them. I am pretty sure the other driver would have been killed and who knows what would have happened to us but it would have been catastrophic.

I didn’t have the volume up because my husband was sleeping. Is the stop at a house or a daycare center? That is a super busy road, we have them here too including mine. Our bus has had several near misses when picking my kids up which is why I drive them now. But I’m still shocked so many people ran the bus lights.

I'm school bus ignorant, because we really don't have them out here. I would have been one of the ones who drove past, but honestly would not have known. Actual residents, on the other hand, have no excuses. The lady seemed a bit nuts, not gonna lie.

I clearly remember reading it before taking my written test 20 years ago. Or is it different by state?

And after I posted I realized there is signage on the bus .. but it says that our buses stop at railroad crossings, and that's about it. There is no school bus transportation system in any of my surrounding communities. The only time you see a school bus is to pick up the football team or a field trip. In that instance, they'd be on school property or parked on a side street .. so I can honestly say I've never dealt with a school bus of kids getting dropped off at a stop. Strange, right?

You’re supposed to stop and wait in both directions if the school bus has the flashers on and the stop arm out because kids could be crossing the street to get to the bus. Around here they try to plan the routes so the kids don’t have to cross the street.

Good for her! Good for the sheriffs! Hope the fines are considerable. I live near a bigger street (still in a residential area) and many kids have to cross it to get to the middle school. There is a light at the intersection and a crossing guard. There were still 20 accidents there last year including one during before school hours where one car ended up on the sidewalk. No one was injured thankfully.
The speed limit on the street was 30. People usually went about 40-45. City lowered the speed limit to 25 and have been ticketing quite frequently. The police have caught people using iPads while driving and 2 people going over 60 MPH down this street (I assume it was later at night because I don't see how they could do that in rush hour traffic).
I just really wish people would pay more attention.
Another egregious incident right across from school was a situation where kids were crossing with their parents, in the official school zone that is clearly marked, and there is a crossing guard. Driver was heading straight for the people even though the crossing guard was holding up the stop sign and the adults were yelling. Finally screeched to a stop. I hope one of the parents took a pic of the license plate.

Fair enough, Free Charlie. I was just thinking how strange it is that it's not so commonplace out here. But you're right -- what else do you need to know?

Not understanding this? So, if the bus stops, ALL the traffic also has to stop too? In most places in the US the law is if you are on a road that is not divided by a median or Jersey wall, traffic in both directions stops for a bus with flashing red lights and stop sign. If you are on a road that is divided by a median, traffic going in the same direction as the bus stops for the bus.

Now I need to google median and Jersey walls. 😄
