I live in the south but heading up to Washington, DC soon. Will be doing a lot of walking to the museums, etc so I need a warm, lightweight jacket (I'm always freezing!) It will be low/mid 30's at night/ 45-50 during the day I expect. It is really hard to determine how warm it might be just by trying it on. I have read that the closer the quilts are, the warmer it is but I guess I don't need overkill. We have a North Face outlet here but they usually just have the "wilder" colors, like bright pink and I want probably gray or white. I tried on one at Uniqlo that fits into a pouch and it seemed warm--but it was 80 degrees outside so it was hard to tell. Any recommendations? I'd like to stay under $100. Thanks--and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Target had a few at my TX location the other day in the $50 range. I think they were all black but may not have seen them all. Their website is good about showing what is in stock at local stores.
I'd also check Walmart, JC Penney, and any local sporting goods stores too.

When I think of puffer jackets, I instantly think of Land's End.
Really, though, just about every store has them now. I've seen some cute ones at Talbots and Nordstrom.
All of these stores are having good Black Friday specials right now.

Costco sells them or try/Gap Old Navy, Macy’s Dicks sporting goods etc.
I have heard good things about the Uniqlo jackets too.

Do you have an REI or Eddie Bauer near you? They generally have temperature ratings on their jackets which should help you determine how warm it will be.

I recently bought this one from JCPenney link. It's a puffer but it's a woven fabric, not the nylon shell which I really like.

My girls got the Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jackets and they are great to be so light and thin. They were fine in 40ish-degree temps with warm layers. I'm planning to get the same jacket for older DD to layer under her nice wool coat when she studies in NYC this winter, because she just is not having a true cold weather coat. I actually googled the Uniqlo vs the Patagonia Nano Puff, and most reviewers said the Uniqlo was just as warm, if not warmer, than the Patagonia, at less than half the price.

Half price right now at Old Navy. I like the frost free puffer jacket and the reviews say it's good to 30 degrees.

Thanks--and Happy Thanksgiving!! I would double check the North Face outlet. Ours has a lot of traditional colors. That being said, their jackets don't really fit me that well. We have a Columbia outlet as well so I would also try there. Otherwise, any sporting goods store should have warm coats? At least they do here. If yours don't, check Dicks Sporting goods, Macy's, Kohl's, etc online.

I wouldn’t recommend a Uniqlo packable jacket for cold weather. They’re useful in cooler weather if you’re not sure when you leave the house if you’re going to need a jacket or not. However they’re pretty thin and not warm, although you can layer underneath obviously. I’ve gad lots of different Uniqlo coats and jackets and I donated that one to goodwill.

I highly recommend the very affordable Frost-Free Puffer Jacket from Old Navy. I just wore it for several days in snowy Rochester, NY, and it was super comfortable and warm.

I found some cute puffer jackets at both Walmart and Target. It’s not going to be very cold, so I wouldn’t get anything too warm.

When are you planning to come to Washington DC? I just looked at weatherunderground.com and right now it's 31 degree F there. The 10 day forecast for this week is the following: F-39 degrees, S-52 degrees with rain, Sunday-57 degrees, mostly sunny, Monday-53 degrees showers in the PM, Tuesday 45 degrees and sunny and Wednesday 44 degrees and sunny. You should also factor in the wind. On Monday winds will be 14 mph which is a lot I think and will make it feel colder. Tues and Wednesday will be the same.
I have a jacket from LLBean that I have bought multiple times because as I lost weight I bought the same jacket-I loved it that much! I started in an XL and I have it now in an XS-but their sizes run a little large so be sure to check out their sizing chart. It's called the Ultra Warm Jacket and comes with a hood so that saves you money on having to buy a hat and I think a hood keeps you warmer anyway. LLBean has a site wide sale of 20% off until 11/27 which brings this jacket down from $189.00 to $151.20 plus free shipping. It's rated at 20 degrees for light activity and -30 degrees for moderate activity meaning you won't feel cold down to those degrees with this jacket on.
I live in Annapolis, MD (almost an hour's drive from Washington DC right on the Chesapeake Bay) and it gets cold here in the winter. I've never been cold while wearing this jacket. It is water resistant (not quite water proof) but good enough that I haven't gotten wet-I don't wear it in a down pour but during showers it's kept me dry. I wash and dry it in my machines. While drying it I add a clean tennis ball to fluff up the down.
They also offer this in a 3/4 length and a full length coat but it'd be more expensive. I've always felt you get what you pay for and when it comes to things like jackets that I need to keep me warm I don't mind paying for quality. And this is a quality jacket. I run cold in the winter too.

I have a NorthFace jacket in an off white color that I love. NorthFace jackets allow for different types of liners to be inserted into the jackets, or you can wear the liner part as its own jacket. I have a lightweight liner that I actually owned prior to buying the jacket and it fits beautifully. I also purchased a heavy duty liner for trips to freezing cold weather. I would try NorthFace again to see if you can find a suitable color. Oh, but mine isn’t a puffy jacket. If that is a requirement, maybe just ignore me!

I would vote for the uniqlo packable. Daytime temps of 40's-50's are not bad, especially if you're walking around (as opposed to standing around at a parade, for example), and you don't want to deal with a giant coat that's going to stifle you when you're inside the museums, etc.
A hat and gloves will make a huge difference if it gets cold. I highly recommend a pashmina which can be used as a scarf or hat/scarf outdoors, and can be used as a shawl indoors. Bonus: they fold really flat and can be carried in a purse.
I took a November trip to DC a couple of years ago with a couple of friends (have been more recently, but in summer), and one gal had a packable Uniqlo. We all thought it was genius.
