This is a weird thing that happened and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas.
So backstory....my dd started dating a guy about three months ago and this girl (I'll call her Kim) started harassing my daughter over it. She would ask very inappropriate questions about their relationship and tell my daughter she needed to break up because the boy was a jerk, etc. There is a lot more detail to the situation but it got bad enough that I ended up contacting the school. Kim then went on to get pregnant and accuse several boys of being the father and then she would say they were not the father. All this to say that Kim is obviously a very troubled girl.
So I thought our situation was behind us. After I talked to the school, Kim seemed to leave my daughter alone until tonight.
My dd was on Instagram tonight when suddenly her account logged out on its own and Kim's account popped up on my daughter's phone. So my daughter had total access to Kim's account and couldn't get into her own account. I had my dd log out of Kim's account and we went to my computer to log back into my dd's account and change the password.
I know this is not innocent. I am not sure what Kim is up to and I don't know how she did it, but I know it is not good. Any ideas? As it stands, it looks like my dd hacked her account but that did not happen. I also wonder if Kim somehow got access to my dd's account at the same time that Kim's account was popping up on my dd's phone. I just don't know. Any thoughts? Hopefully I explained this clearly. I know it is confusing.

Time to ask your daughter some tough questions....
The other girl’s account isn’t going to show up on your daughter’s phone unless your daughter tried to hack or knew the password. Sorry.
You may not be hearing the full story here.

When you say you were with her, can you elaborate? Were you sitting there on Instagram with her and witnessed the random account switch right before you? Or did your daughter approach you to show you something for example, toggled and there it was?

We were in the room together. She said something along the lines of "whoa, whats going on". Then she showed it to me. My dd did not do it.
There are apparently apps that help hijack a person's Instagram account but it doesn't explain why Kim's account appeared on my dd's phone.

I am not sure you're getting the entire story.
What would the other girl gain by allowing your daughter unfettered access to her own Instagram account? Your daughter could do any number of malicious things. Not saying she would, or is that type, but...if I hated someone, the last thing I would do would be give them access to my social media accounts.
It might not be pleasant to consider, but it seems more likely that your daughter might be doing something problematic than that the other girl gave your daughter unwanted access to her instagram account.

If my dd did do it, why in the world would she show it to me? Don't you think she would be secret about it? She knows darn well I would flip out if she was trying to hack an account.

And just to add a little more info on the first situation when I reported her to the school, Kim got my dd's computer and typed a lot of embarrassing sexual things which showed up in the search bar. She took pics of the search bar and planned on posting it to social media. She also took a pic of my dd and her boyfriend and cut and pasted embarrassing stuff to the photo and forwarded it to people. She was also openly videoing my dd and her boyfriend at lunch. I have no idea what she intended to do with the video. I kept trying to let my dd handle it but I finally had enough and went to administration. She seemed to back off my dd and moved on to other targets until now.

With the above information Kim may have added her Instagram to your daughter’s on the computer. You can toggle between accounts while being logged in to both.

Is there any chance Kim has hacked your dd's phone? As opposed to just instagram? I don't know if that's possible, but I do know computers can be hacked and remotely controlled.

That girl is very troubled. It’s awful your dd has to be stressed by her antics.
When your account is logged into a different device you get an email notification.
I just don’t understand kids sometimes. My bff’s dd has a former friend doing online stuff to her. Why are kids so mean?!

Mom, my advice to you right now is to consider that maybe she’s not innocent in all this and was trying to make it look like a weird technology glitch. I was a teen and I know teens pretty well and the innocent “what on earth is happening omgggggg” act? Nah, cmon. If the other girl is taking pics of her computer and has the hands on time on your daughters computer to do all this stuff your DD is at least advocating for herself very poorly and more likely is involved in some crappy teen girl back and forth - which is normal stuff but don’t be fooled into thinking this just happened. I would reload her app to get rid of the other logins, and I would coach her how to stop letting Kim touch her stuff.

She was on video chat through instagram with the boyfriend. Her phone kept dying because she had 3% left so she closed Instagram down and called him on the regular phone and went to open Instagram. That is when Kim's account popped up. She would log out of Kim's account and log back in and Kim's would come up. I was right in the room as this whole thing played out.

You need to call the police and ask them what to do. I don't understand how this girl got a hold of your DD's computer and the Instagram stuff is very odd.
How old are these girls?

I just logged out of my account to see what it looked like. When your daughter logged out on her phone, did it only have one account listed?
I have two accounts connected, so my logout page asked if I wanted to log out form one, the other, or both.
When she logged in on the computer did it solve the issue?

What does her Instagram account look like? If you go to her user name at the top of her IG and click on it, is there a pop-down menu of other accounts, like this: If so, she’s somehow added Kim’s account to her IG. If Kim’s account is there, she should be able to log out of it or remove it. I’m uncertain how this could be possible. I’ve been using IG for years and have never encountered this. I am uncertain what would happen if Kim was somehow able to add your daughter’s IG account as one of Kim’s own... I don’t think IG would reverse-sync and add Kim’s account to your daughter’s IG, if that makes sense. Has your daughter changed her IG password to something new and complicated and not easy to guess since this started happening? I’m also unsure how Kim had access to your daughter’s computer? I admit that I agree that you’re not getting the full story here and I doubt your daughter is as innocent as she claims. These things just do not add up.

You could also try turning on 2-factor authentication, under the settings section on her IG account. It says it will help protect from log-ins from unrecognized devices.

She is at school now so I am not sure. We wiped her phone last night and I have not let her download the app again so I am not sure what will happen when she does. It will be interesting. Lavenderladylayout I am not sure if Kim could have hacked the phone. That is a good point. Trollie, thank you for the support! Really Red, this particular girl is a freshman. mushlovecats, we are working on teaching her to advocate for herself and to get tough. . She went to a very protected school before switching to this school and she was not exposed to this type of stuff. She is not up to speed on the things that go on. Quite frankly, I am not up to speed. Fortunately or unfortunately, she's getting wise quickly. Lainey, I agree. The school administration called her parents in on the first incident and told them the police would be the next step. I don't know what consequences they gave her but I felt the school gave too much grace because we had tons of proof on the first incident. At this point though, it looks like my daughter is the guilty one. I just need to figure out how the girl did this. And I understand everyone is saying my daughter is not innocent but I am telling you, she is. teddyw, I agree. I do not understand this mentality at all.

I think someone needs to pay a visit to the police about Kim's behaviour. I agree. Doesn't have to result in charges/arrests, but can help you gain insight on how to proceed. It also sounds like it is time for your DD to shut down all of her social media accounts. This is going downhill quickly and nothing good is going to happen. With no social media accounts, she becomes less of a target. And just to add a little more info on the first situation when I reported her to the school, Kim got my dd's computer and typed a lot of embarrassing sexual things which showed up in the search bar. Why was Kim able to get your DD's computer? Your DD is partly at fault for this event for not keeping that computer under her control at all times. That's computer security 101.

It seems like Kim got onto one of your DD's devices and saved her login/password. If your DD has a password manager that works across devices, maybe Kim saved it on the computer and DD somehow clicked the wrong login on the phone. Or maybe Kim picked up the phone when DD wasn't paying attention. I think that is more likely than DD hacking your DD's Instagram or vice-versa.

This isn't hacking, this is one of the girls got physical use of the other girl's property. I've logged out of instagram and deleted the app, when I reinstall the app it still knows it me and automatically logs me in.

My dd stupidly handed her the computer and gave her the password to look. Again, my daughter was in a very small, protected school up until this past January. This type of behavior is totally foreign to her. And yes, she did get in big trouble for allowing Kim to have her computer and password.

If your DD is as naive as you indicate, I seriously would consider closing all of her social media accounts. Once this blows over and she gains some experience/maturity, then she could always open new accounts.
