I have a girl that is turning 5 this month. She's all about board games right now! She also likes Beginning Reader books.

My 5 year old boy loves riding his bike & scooter, Legos, building forts, board games, r/c vehicles, monster trucks, etc.

I’m pretty sure most toys for 5 yr olds have a ton of pieces. It’s a parents worse nightmare - lol

Balls any kind. Soft ones to throw in the house, rubber balls to hit against a wall, toys with balls, all hits with boys that age.

I’ll never understand threads like this.
You’re just going to buy him a random toy and hope he doesn’t already have it? You can’t just ask his parents?

Honestly, I would ask his parents for ideas. At that age my DS only liked Thomas the Tank Engine and SuperHero Friends. He wouldn’t have played with much else.

Thanks for the replies! I am with my mom. We lost my sister last December, my father the December before. I am trying to help her just get through the holidays. I told her I would ask the peas for some helpful suggestions. She looked forward to hearing the replies. Hope that makes it a little easier to “understand”.
Oh and she decided on a RC robot. Found it herself on her iPad on amazon. Not bad for an 88 year old 🙂

I’m very sorry for your losses, but it still seems more logical (not to mention more efficient and faster) to just text the parents and say, “hey, what should I get nephew for Christmas?”

My 5 year old is a Lego freak, so we are getting those. He is also getting a Bumbleebee (transformer) face mask that changes his voice or something. And he is getting a Crate Creature. And Grossery Gangs. They make a urinal now where you put water and the pop out of there, like the toilet. It’s kind of hilarious to me, and absolutely hilarious to the kids in this house. 😁

I have gotten some really great suggestions from Peas, things I have never heard of and I work with kids and have a pretty good idea of what they are into. Maybe the parents respond like parents I know, “I don’t know, he likes dinosaurs.” Or some other vague idea. Not all parents are able to give very helpful ideas.

Do they still sell Chevron Cars? Those were a huge hit from grandma and auntie when my boys were that little. They're really well made and so darn cute.

Honestly it’s the easiest and best way to go if you’re at least pointed in the right direction in terms of things the kid actually likes and will use. We get stuff for my niece’s kids and she usually asks for specific categories of things but gives us some leeway as far as what we choose, such as, “STEM toys for science that we can use to study principles of physics” so for his birthday I bought the boy stomp rockets. He loved that!

I know you said limited pieces but my almost 5 year old loves to bulld. He regularly builds with magnatiles (easy to store since they stack flat) and duplos. He also likes building train tracks (ikea) but that’s a distant 3rd. Maybe buy a small container to keep the pieces together when they aren’t being used?
He also loves scary costumes and Scooby doo stuff but that’s probably unusual 😁

don't forget about experiences, maybe a membership to the zoo or tickets to amusement parks, etc.
