We have a couple sets of great friends that I’m trying to decide what to get them for a Christmas gift. I’ve come up with dinner and a movie date night gift card (I feel like is the easy way out 😊) or a gift basket with their favorite treats/snacks (each one would be different) Which one would your prefer? Or any other great ideas in the $40 range?

I like the first option the best, but would also enjoy the basket.

1st one. I can buy my own snacks any time.

I'd prefer a gift basket but instead of their favorite snacks I'd include the fixings for a meal like fancy pasta, olive oil, sauce, antipasto, chocolate and wine. Everything can go in a pasta pot or salad bowl instead of a basket.
Or a sushi rolling kit with rice, rice wine vinegar, seasoning, nori, bamboo rolling mats, chopsticks, soy sauce, pickled ginger in a bowl.

If money is tight for the couple, then #1 would be best. If money isn't an issue, then giving them a $40 GC isn't as special/personal as a basket with hand selected gifts.

First one - although I'm really not sure you can do both dinner and a movie for $40 - could just do dinner.

I would be happy if I received either one of those.
A couple of points: Do you know them well enough to know what their favourite foods are to include in the gift basket? I would love that as a gift, but only if I got a triple Brie (for example) and not blue cheese.
As for the dinner and movie night - I know that the exchange rate means $40 is more to an American than to an Australian, but over here you wouldn’t even get two movie tickets and a small popcorn for $40!!

Both are nice. For me I'd prefer the basket because it shows that you've paid attention to what we like.

Definitely the first option. I would do the entire $40 for a restaurant though.

Putting together snack baskets are so much fun. My mom did this for my kids and dh a few years back for Christmas. She and I had the best time shopping for it.

Both are thoughtful, but I'd appreciate dinner and a movie more. Anything that keeps me from having to cook.

I would appreciate either one, but would enjoy anything date night motivating more.

Here the movie alone would cost close to $30 for two adults. No way are we getting dinner in too.
I would like the treat basket, with yummy things I probably would not buy for myself.

I would prefer one, but I had a friend get a massage gift certificate and it took her a year to use it. It made me realize if someone gives you a gift card that you don't see as your money, there might not be an urgency to use. I used to always get starbucks gift cards at work, I don't drink coffee, and I recently found a stack of cards sitting at home. I could have found something else to buy but it never occurred to me.
My mother once got a gift card to a restaurant whose menu she didn't like. So I think about that as well.

The first one and we can do dinner and a movie here for $40 but then we would do a matinee movie.

I prefer gifts over gift cards, so I'd love the basket.

You know what I’d really love from my friends? Time together. I’d by a trendy adult board game and plan a get together.

yeah, i am with the above poster. i would like to take my friends to dinner as their gift and be able to spend time with them. or have them over. honestly, if you are a decent cook, i would rather have them over for dinner.

The first one and we can do dinner and a movie here for $40 but then we would do a matinee movie. Tickets here are $10 a piece ( for the regular theater) and 2 people are not eating for $20 not even at a fast food place.

We rarely splurge on this so I'd go for the movie/dinner date!

I'm not a fan of food gifts or going to the movies, but I'm a rare bird. A restaurant gift card, however, would be awesome. Going out to eat is something we can rarely afford to do, so I would love that.
