I got nothing to top the gorilla story, but I have shipped a cat from Philly to Florida. I couldn’t go with him, but my apartment ‘discovered’ that I had a cat and ordered me to get rid of him. Since I was moving home in 6 months, I just shipped him early.
It was over 30 yrs. ago, and vet at the time gave me a tranquilizer for the cat. I doped him up, slung him over my shoulders (how the cat always traveled in the car) and drove him 30 miles to the airport. By the time I got there, he was half awake, but kitty-drunk, stumbling over himself. The airline rep and I nearly peed ourselves laughing at him trying to get away from the pet carrier and tripping. Three hours later, my father picked him up at the Pensacola airport, still kitty drunk and asleep. The biggest trauma for the cat was waking up to find himself face to face with my folks’ cat as he’d never seen another cat before.

Our orange tabby went on vacation with us and flew Southwest more than once. The vet gave us sedatives, but usually half a dose was enough to quiet her. The hardest part was trying to lug 3 kids, carry on luggage, 2 computers, and one heavy-ass cat through security. It was a spectacle for sure, but the cat was just fine and was just happy to be with us and not left alone at home. Either way, good luck with the move!

the monkey is out of the cage. hahaha!! that is a heckuva story! "I repeat: The monkey is OUT of the cage." This phrase sounds like a secret spy code-phrase, or something! ETA: whatever you end up doing, make sure if you give your cat any medication that you know what affect it will have on the cats. I once had to give one of our cats medication (Benadryl, maybe?) and the minute I got her to swallow, she started foaming at the mouth-- profusely. I freaked out, thinking I had maybe forced the pill down her windpipe or something (?) equally bad, and called the emergency vet hotline # for advice. I described what was going on to the guy on the phone, and his response? "oh, it's fine. That medication tastes bad... so the foaming at the mouth is just the cat salivating to wash the taste out of her mouth." Really?!? Would have been nice if the vet who recommended it had told me that!!!

So glad it worked out for you getting Linus moved. Hopefully Lucy will be just as easy. They are both gorgeous cats!

So glad it worked out for you getting Linus moved. Hopefully Lucy will be just as easy. They are both gorgeous cats! Thanks! I'm glad one is done and I feel much better about the second (although she is more of a scaredy cat). I think I drove everyone around me crazy talking about it the past few months! Lucy had some health things come up and I kept debating about keeping her or taking her to get it done in one shot. She is doing better now, but I'm glad I'm keeping her a little longer. Both cats turn 14 in October - so they have been troopers!

What's do you think its going to be like living at the Grand Canyon after your visit? Good question! We had been to the canyon multiple times on vacation so were familiar with the location (i.e. middle off nowhere), climate, etc. but obviously it will be a lot different to live there. My husband is loving it and I am pretty excited. It is a food desert though so will miss good food and also culture. School will be a big change for my daughter but I think she will do well. My daughter and I will be moving there end of July. I am likely to start a blog about what it is like to live there!

Are Linus and Lucy mirror images of each other? What cuties. Linus in carrier does not look amused.

Are Linus and Lucy mirror images of each other? What cuties. Linus in carrier does not look amused. They are mirror images. They also have some other subtle differences (amount of white on tail, etc). I think is is safe to say Linus is happy he won't have to go back in a carrier for a long time.
