Mind you he was only 3 months old and this is in 1939
Dear Billie: I got a letter from your mother today and she told me you was a bad boy and that she had to spank you. Now grandma does not believe you spit the peas out all over everything and I never thought you would be treated that way. Try and be good so they won't make black and blue marks on you. Grandma is coming to St. Louis just as soon grandpa can get off and straighten things out. When I got home Sat night I found your picture in the mailbox, it is so sweet I am going to get a frame. Now be good and eat everything they give you and keep well, some of these days you will see grandma and grandpa drive up so keep looking.
My dad sent me this (he is always sending me random stuff in the mail).. so apparently at 3 months my dad is eating peas and spitting them out and getting beaten for it (Now I highly doubt that happened, he had a pretty good childhood, although I think his dad was strict and might have given him a good whooper when he was older) Can you image sending a letter like that today??? LOL

After my mom died I found old letters from the 1940s. They were from my dad's grandmother to him and my mom and were written in pencil. I treasure them.

I have the letter my great aunt sent to my mother after I was born. She was quite surprised my mother had named me after her, my great aunt.

That is so sweet. My brother just sent me some recordings of my parents, my dad’s parents, my other grandpa, my great grandma, and my great aunt. There were 5 different times and different people. Each time my dad would have someone say the date, “you know, for posterity.” He had a reel to reel tape. They had some neighbors leaving and they were talking about how they will miss playing Risk, which is one of my boys favorite games. These tapes were before I was ever born but I had met everyone.

I have a "love letter" that my dad wrote to my mom before they were married (1952). It is precious.
I used to have a 12" wide printer, and so I scanned the letter, both sides, as well as the envelope and put this into a scrapbook that I made for my mom, after dad had died. She cried when she saw what I had done. Dad had also enclosed a dried edelwiesse flower. This was also on the scanned page. So sweet.
Both of my parents have now passed away and this is a sweet reminder of their love for each other.

I can totally see my mom whooping me for that. Except it would be for hot cereal. I detest hot cereal. It would have been a “power” thing to my mom. She wrote diaries for my brother and me for the first couple years of our lives with her. My favorite story is that she always read Bible stories from the Children’s Bible during breakfast, and when I was around a year old she wondered if I was retaining any of the stories. She was reading the story of Joseph in Egypt and came to the part where Pharaoh calls him from prison to interpret his dreams. Joseph shaved before going before Pharaoh. She says I put down the spoon (from eating my cereal) and mimicked shaving with an electric razor like Dad. I guess I learned to eat that cereal. The only way I eat cereal now is pouring it on top of milk or eating it in rice crispy treats (with brown butter ). I only like oatmeal as granola but do like rice heated with a little milk, butter, and sugar. workingclassdog The black and blue part is professional level grandmotherly intervention. Awesome guilt trip for mom. It’s hilarious. Rob’s mom wrote her dad a letter when Rob was born. She announced that they’d named him after Grandpa. The letter is sweet and a family treasure. psoccer There’s some companies that will do conversions to digital. Legacy Box Consumer Reports article CR says Costco has some services?
