Since the holiday season is upon us and sitting around a board game with family/friends while sipping cocoa (or wine) is fairly common this time of year, I thought I'd get another thread going of board games your family loves. I recently found an AWESOME toy store (locally owned) that had the most extensive collection of board games I've ever seen (CO peas can ask me about this store). I started looking into a few of the suggestions they gave (and allow you to play with their demos) and found some fantastic games that we've either bought or plan to buy to try.
I'll start with our favorite family games (i.e. >2 players): 1. Ticket to Ride (we love US and Europe) 2. Exploding Kittens 3. Killer Bunnies 4. Munchkin
And some 2 player games (once the kids are to bed): 1. Bananagrams (easy and fast scrabble) 2. Hive - sorta like a chess with tiles 3. Peek and Push
Games we want to buy: 1. Azul - beautiful Moorish tile-laying game with strategy 2. Codenames - A new Harry Potter version is out which I would LOVE 3. Concept 4. Pandemic
Share some games you love!!

Can we add favorite Solitaire board games, as well?
I love Killer Bunnies and want to get Exploding Kittens.
Monopoly is still the fave around here and we have various versions.
With kids Careers is really fun, too.
For 2 people Pirate vs. Pirate is a fun and fast game. Backgammon Scrabble

Suggestions for games for more than 2 players:
Hanabi Wizard Paperback (also good with 2 people!) Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (also good with 2 people!) Sagrada Pandemic: Rising Tide Ingenious (also good with 2 people!) Sleuth Power Grid Mamma Mia! Tichu CV Sushi Go! Win, Lose, or Banana
Favorite 2 player games - some of these are older games so I'm not sure of their availability:

What store??? It's called Grandrabbit's. They have 3 locations in Boulder, Westminster, and Broomfield. It's fantastic. I thought it was going to be small, but it's actually quite big and has a massive selection. Great boardgames, books, puzzles, and small items (i.e. stocking stuffers). They also have it sectioned off by age appropriate items.

Codenames can be done but isn’t as fun with only 2 people.
Azul is great — just don’t let people continuously gang up on one person if you play with more than two. because that’s a pretty asshole strategy. ask me how I know.
Mystic Vale, if you like deckbuilders. But it’s a little bit of a twist because you make your own cards with these sleeves.
Carcassonne is always a good one.
Castles of Mad King Ludwig is quite different and fun when you learn. Tough to learn from the rule book — watch YouTube videos instead!
Morels is a fun and quick 2 person game. You collect mushrooms, lol.
If you like coop games like Pandemic, Mysterium can be fun as well as Eldritch Horror (takes forever to play, though).

Full disclosure, we own a ridiculous number of board games (>100) and I'm kind of a geek about it.
Here are some good group/family games: If you want to try cooperative: Forbidden Desert and Pandemic the Cure are fantastic. Or straight Pandemic. If you want to ramp it up a bit, get Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 (but don't start there). These games play both for families and with just 2 so they're really versatile. If you like these and would like some more recommendations for cooperative games let me know.
Here are some other solid family games that are very fun and simple, quick-playing: Sushi Go Bang! the Dice game King of Tokyo Cash 'n Guns Cockroach Poker Codenames (you mentioned - there is a 2-player version but I haven't played it). Mysterium Spyfall Colt Express Ticket to Ride
Here are a few of my favourite 2-player games - most of these play with more: Splendor Roll for the Galaxy (space themed) Imperial Settlers 7 Wonders: Duel Patchwork - 2player only Istanbul (maybe plays better with more than 2) Star Realms - very fast 2 player only game, and an introduction to deck builders. Hero Realms is an alternate if you don't like space themed games Santorini - if you like chess-like play If you want to try a puzzley game, Exit the Game has many versions - kind of an escape room in a box - plays any number
+ Bonus Reco: Clank! or Clank! in Space. Plays well with 2 or groups and it's a good family game. It's a bit more than what you've played so far but its so fun.

I love Castles of Mad King Ludwig, but I never find it works as well with only 2-player. Have you had success with it? We play suburbia instead which I ADORE, but my husband despises. So it doesn't get played a lot.

The element of chance (and someone purchasing the piece you are eyeing) def goes down.

Skip code names if you’ll mostly be playing with 2 people. 4 is best.

Codenames Duet is pretty fun . My friend and I always play it when we are gaming. We love the challenge of beating the game! We have only won 1/10 times but still enjoy it.
Games I've enjoyed with 2 players are Jaipur, Codenames Duet, Azul, Splendor, Ticket to Ride, Sagrada, Patchwork, Cottage Garden, Kingdomino, Barenpark, and Takenoko
We play frequently at a local Game Board Cafe so I know I missed other great games. For more ideas I suggest you check out Gameboardgeek.com
