There was a car chase earlier this evening. It was on the city streets, so it was a slow chase because of all the cars at rush hour. At one point the driver drove on the wrong side of the street and came head to head with a car. The suspect's car was essentially blocked in, with cars to both sides of him and the car in front.
If you were the driver that suddenly found yourself face to face with a car being chased by police would you have - A - Kept your car there, blocking the car from going any further B - Moved out of the way in case the suspect was dangerous C - Other
The driver of the car moved over just enough so that the suspect's car (and the police) could get by. The suspect was eventually caught as he fled on foot after getting stuck in more traffic.
It made me wonder what I would have done. Part of me says I would have stayed put, partially out of surprise and not knowing what to do. But, if I had had my kids in the car with me, I think I may have tried to get out of the car with my kids and get to someplace safe.

We have to make split second decisions and sometimes people's egos get in the way. You have to decide whatever is going to keep you the safest. I have been in this situation and ended up staying put in my vehicle, and not moving. In my particular case, the person was able to move around me, and did and my son and I were ok. Had I moved in that situation (as much as I wanted to get away) I think it may have been unsafe.

I think it's easy to say what you would do but until your in the situation I don't know.
And I hope to never be in that situation.

Hard to truly know, but I'd likely move if I saw a car coming head on towards me; however, if I saw that there was a kidnapping victim in that other vehicle, I'd probably try and stay put.

Hard to truly know, but I'd likely move if I saw a car coming head on towards me; however, if I saw that there was a kidnapping victim in that other vehicle, I'd probably try and stay put. There really wasn’t much time between when the suspect drove onto the other side and then came head to head with the other car. Probably only two or three car lengths. Both cars actually stopped for a second or two before the other car started inching to one side. I held my breath wondering what was going to happen.

I would move out of the way of the suspect's car ASAP. I look at it like this. I'm not a cop. It's not my responsibility to detain the suspect. I have no training in that nor do I have a weapon to protect myself. My priority is to keep myself and any passengers in my car alive. A suspect in the other car is desperate to get away. If I'm in a car blocking his exit while he is being chased from police he is going to get desperate fast-which could very well lead to violence.
First thing I'd do is hit the gas hard and get out of this way-and keep going in the opposite direction.

Staying put/blocking seems like improving my chance to get carjacked. I’d like to think I would move out if the way.

Move the hell out of the way. I’m no hero. And I’m not naive enough to think I could stop a car chase.

My only aunt died in a high speed police chase. She didn’t even have time to react. The suspect hit her at 100 miles per hour in a 35mph zone. The police department was found to be liable for her death. They admitted they should’ve backed off.
Get the hell out the way. If the suspect is evading the police, they’re going to hit you with not a care in the world. It isn’t worth it.
Like asking what you would do if someone pointed a gun at a bank teller?
Sometimes it’s okay to be human and not a martyr.

I am pretty sure I would move. I would do whatever I needed to do to keep myself and my children (if they were in the car) safe. There is no way to know if the person in the car has a gun that they might use on me.

I would worry he would ram into my car so I would move. I figure by this point the police have enough info to figure out who he is and can find him another day IF he gets away, but police will call backup and probably catch him. Either way not my problem so no need to get involved.

Probably get out of his way. There is most likely no way that my car would block him, he'd just ram me and keep going. My first instinct would most likely be get out of the way.

There was a similar thread recently (although not related to a police chase) and my answer to this thread is the same as my answer to the other: If I was in the US I would move out of the way because there is a good chance the person in the car had a gun. In my own country I would be more likely to keep him blocked in (although I really don’t know what I’d truly do in that situation).

There is no easy answer as you are a potential victim no matter where you go within the vicinity of that car. I just hope to never be in that situation. I had a distant relative who was killed in a chase like that. He was the innocent victim between the police and the suspect on an interstate highway. It's been about 20 years ago and I don't remember all the details.

Based on my past reactions I probably would have stayed put. I don't know why I do such things. I am no hero and I am not looking to be one. But I am the type of person who wants to help out (not that this is helping out in any means). Years ago I was robbed at a restaurant where I worked. A guy asked for some change. He had a handful of pennies. I opened the drawer and he threw the pennies at me. I tried to slam the drawer on his hand and grabbed his jacket by leaping over the counter. I never thought twice about it. I looked back and thought what the hell is wrong with me. But clearly I was not thinking. Then again a couple of years later I was working part time at a hotel (Drury Inn) and I was on the second floor running an errand or something. Apparently (and not to my knowledge), the hotel all of a sudden was surrounded by cops and so was the entry way. I was on the same floor as some dudes (they were in a room).. they come running out and the rest is a blur but I followed them downstairs and tripped one. WHY??? I have no idea. In fact I totally forgot the entire episode from my memory until I was friends on FB with my girlfriend who was a manager there and a friend outside work and she brought it up and I had no idea what she was talking about until she was telling me the story. WEIRD. I just should have realized at that time I should have gone into law enforcement

I THINK instinct would be to get out of the way - but who knows when you’re actually in the situation for real?
And it would depend on traffic around me, the road/street/median, how much time (seconds?) you have, and who knows what else. I don’t think you’d have much time to assess the situation and decide what to do.
