My 75 yo Mom is pretty out-there. She dies her very short hair bright red/burgundy, wears the same makeup palette she did when I was a kid, bright colors which include tie dye and funky funny weird earrings.
So she gets a diagnosis of Melanoma on her scalp. Had the surgery to remove it yesterday and has a large bandage the wound because it is open pending the results of the biopsy (not sure they got it all) and having a skin graft on Wednesday to have the hole covered up. As she is going in to surgery she tells the doc she would like him to shave her whole head. He wouldn't do it, so the nurse did. So she comes out of recovery and is so excited they did that. Then she tells us maybe she'll get something tattooed over the skin graft. Ugh...thankfully I take her home after she is good to go, no overnight in the hospital.
I spent the night with her and this morning she says "I have lots of stickers, let's put them on my bandage." I jokingly say, "I have bling in my massive scrap stash." And she asks me to go home and get it. So I do, and my sister and I decorated her bandage (which is covered with plastic) on the top of her head with different colored bling. Boy is the doc going to be surprised when he sees her Wednesday!
So glad Mom could take a bit of fun within all of the negative that could go wrong with the Melanoma diagnosis.

I sincerely hope they got it all. Melanoma can be one of the easiest cancers to cure when they get it early.
I love your mom's attitude and that you are able to enable her sense of fun!
