UPDATE: Mom's reaction (Warning - this may get lengthy...)
So I gave mom her present this morning. It was the last one I had her open and as she pulled it out, she had this weird look on her face (it was rolled up in tissue). Shortly before that, she'd given me a new toilet brush in a similarly shaped box. When I handed her the present, she said "did I get a new toilet brush too?" - I looked her dead in the eye and said "If you clean your toilet with this, I will never forgive you" with a murderous glare. As she unrolled it she started to ooh and ah over it, not even noticing the charms at first because she'd taken her glasses off so they wouldn't reflect in the pictures. When she put the glasses back on her first words weres "Oh wow, where did you get all these!?!?" She'd forgotten that I had them.
My mom isn't overly emotional unless it has to do with dogs (I think it's the German), so there were no tears, but she was totally delighted and has already picked out a place to hang it (under an aqua/purple mosaic glass window that my late stepdad and I made for her years ago). I'd love to share pictures - because the initial weird face is hilarious and the face she makes with her gift is just pure joy, but I know she would not appreciate me posting her picture on the internet for just anyone to see. She did point out that I got one of the charms in the "wrong" place (again German - lol ), but I told her she'd have to argue with Professor Google over that - so that should give her something to do over the next few days . In all seriousness, we had a lovely day - laughed a lot, ate a great meal, and genuinely enjoyed ourselves and the meaningful gifts we gave one another - I know I'm treasuring my new toilet brush (before anyone gets all up in arms about the toilet brush, that was not my only gift and it was something I had mentioned wanting when we were out shopping together - I got several other thoughtful things from her)
Thank you all for the kind comments! It's really nice to be able to share with people who "get" it. Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!

I've been working on this quilted travel map for my mom for a while and I finally finished tonight! Mom collected a bunch of little shield charms from all over Germany in the 1960s and 70s. A few years ago my grandma gave them to me and I wanted to figure out a way to display them - here's the result:
