I love the old musicals - Brigadoon, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, Oklahoma....
watching Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby reminds me of my Papa. We have his army photo and he was so movie star handsome back then, he looked just like the movie stars back then.
of course, I've also got Chevy Chase running through my head (we're gonna press on and have the hap hap happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny fu**ing Kaye" 😂😂
they just don't make them like this anymore!

They don't, that's for sure. When I was growing up I didn't appreciate the music back then. My best friend used to call Frank Sinatra, Frank Snotrag as we would rush off to listen to the music of the '70's. I just bought myself a ratpack Christmas Album. Their singing is so peaceful and smooth.

I love that movie so much! Fathom events had it in the theaters a few weeks ago and I went to see it, of course. The costumes, the singing, the dancing, the sweet story. I just love that movie so much.
Did you know Fred Astaire was cast in this one based on the success of Holiday Inn (where the song actually debuted) but he got sick and then they cast someone else who got sick, and that is how they ended up with Danny Kaye? Now, I love Fred Astaire and certainly no one equaled his grace or panache, but he wasn’t right for the role. He didn’t have the aw shucks, sweet innocence that Danny Kaye had. The character would have to have been too different, I think Danny Kaye was perfect for Bing and the rest of the cast,
Also, the Sisters scene is one of the funniest I have ever seen. Again, if Fred had been in the role I don’t know that he and Bing would have been goofing around like that during takes and we might never have that perfect little scene.
Man, I think I am going to watch it again tonight!

That is my all time favorite Christmas movie. Sometimes I even watch it twice during the Christmas season. I love classic films and musicals so it’s a win win for me. The music and dance numbers are great. I’ve read that some of the dialog was ad libbed which is probably why it works so well. And every time I watch the movie I tear up at that scene toward the end with the general.

They make what sells. If the youth of today wanted musicals we'd have them. Movie making is a business and people follow the cash. I tell myself this every time I see pink and flowers on most scrapbooking lines of paper. Someone is buying it in droves, so it is the same thing over and over.
I do love a good musical, but most of the adults I know don't really enjoy them. People say who breaks out in song while walking down the street? Not gunna lie, I do.

The Sisters scene I mentioned above was just the boys goofing around during takes, but the director loved it so much he kept it. That is why you see Bing laughing so hard during it, he couldn’t hold it together long enough to get through an entire take. Another bit of trivia before I bore you all to death and take off for the afternoon, Rosemary Clooney sang both parts of the Sisters song. Someone else sang for Vera Allen in the other songs, but Sisters is all RC. Also, due to the weird contract stuff that was still going on then between studios the soundtrack for the movie isn’t the same as the movie. The “official” soundtrack has Peggy Lee singing for RC.

We do have movie musicals today - they're just mostly animated. And they do very well, even with adult audiences. Moana, Frozen - I bet everyone here can sing at least a few bars from those movies. Glee brought the movie musical format to TV and did very well. The Mamma Mia movies were hits. Stage musicals seem to keep drawing in adults, too. How many millions of tickets sold each year, between Broadway and national tours? So I don't think it's that people don't enjoy musicals any more - I think that what people have come to expect of movies has changed a lot. When I watch an older movie - even one from the 80s - the first thing I notice is how slow-paced it seems. We expect the plot to be constantly moving forward. That doesn't happen in a traditional musical, where everything stops for a musical number.

I love White Christmas... even if all I can stare at the whole time is how thin Vera-Ellen is. My mom loved musicals and it rubbed off on most of us.

I think I mentioned on another thread about my love for this movie and how much I adore the ever-so-talented Vera Ellen. I would like to have seen Fred Astaire dance with her in this movie. They had her perform some of her numbers with professional dancers because Danny Kaye just wasn’t up to par.
I’ve read a fair amount of trivia about this movie. If memory serves, Donald O’Connor was the second choice for the role that eventually went to Danny Kaye. Donald O’Connor became ill when he contracted a disease from the Mule in his previous movie “Francis the Talking Mule”.
My late mother raised me watching movie musicals. I do thank her for that.

I have a non-musical group of friends apparently. I stopped seeing Disney movies when my kids got too old. I have seen parts of some of them, but they don't hold my interest. I do love Broadway, but I only have one friend who will go with me. One of my former students is in the Cher Show on Broadway and I do want to see that. I think that the superhero genre has taken center stage and the genres struggle to get the viewers.

Even La la Land with it's very mediocre at best singing and dancing was a success. There is definitely a market for it.

Here’s a bit of trivia:the snow in the final scenes was made of asbestos!
This movie is the first one I watch every year. Followed by The Homecoming, Elf, Miracle on 34th Street(the old one) and Love,Actually.

White Christmas is my "kick off" movie. I watch it every Thanksgiving weekend as a way to celebrate the beginning of the season! As a kid, I always wanted to be one of those little girls who dance en pointe (especially when I knew they were way too young to be on their toes!)

This is my all time favorite movie. Rosemary Clooney, Dean Jagger, Vera Ellen and George Chakiris are all from my area. They call Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area The White Christmas town. Rosemary's house in Augusta Kentucky houses the biggest White Christmas movie props. The house is now owned by Heather French Henry(Miss America 2000) and her husband former Lt. Governor Steve Henry. They have collected quite a bit of the props plus items from George Clooney movies and they are working on trying to gather items from movies Vera Ellen started in. George Chakiris is one of the main male dancers in the movie. He credits Rosemary for helping to get his career off the ground. A promo of the movie featured him and Rosemary together and she and the studio received tons of fan mail about him and she asked the studio to take a look at him. He went on to win an Oscar for West Side Story. He remained good friends with Vera Ellen and her death was devastating to him. He still owns a home in Norwood Ohio and makes beautiful jewelry.

My husband and I saw White Christmas in our local movie place a couple weeks ago and it looked and sounded spectacular. I know the movie by heart, but I'd never seen it in a big screen. The first dance number with Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen at the nightclub in Florida was especially wonderful looking on a big screen.
I just love Bing Crosby's voice, especially at Christmastime.

I am listening while doing some cooking for tomorrow. The beginning part when Der Bingle sings White Christmas all by himself is just perfection, it gives me goose bumps. That man could sing like no one else.

White Christmas is definitely one of our favorites! We also love Holiday Inn.
For the record, we love live action musicals, not just the animated ones.
We love many of the old movies, Christmas movies, but not limited to that theme. Our kids were raised on the oldies, and when they find someone their age who is familiar with any of them, they get pretty excited.

Jamie is even a stage production filmed and played at the movie theatre.. all in full theatres! Maybe people just don't talk about it as much as they do super hero movies? I don't watch any of them! I guess it takes all kinds!
