I love my version, but this writer would find it unacceptable, I am sure.
I cook some black eyed peas with a little ham. I add lots of water. Then I drain the water from the peas and use that water for the water to cook my rice.
In the pan to cook the rice, I chop up some bacon and onions, cook until the onions are clear, then add the rice and water (and salt) and cook till the rice is done. Then I add the peas back into the rice, stir well and serve.

I sent that to my friend... thanks.
I have been wanting to buy some of the gold rice and try the sea peas.

I highly recommend THIS Carolina gold rice. It's grown by people I know. My boys camped on some of their properties in the summer when they were younger.

Most everyones family around here in my part of NC has their own version. I have had it plenty but never cooked it. I seem to recall our family cooks using purple hulls or field peas as well as blackeyes. IMO, I would surely go to local farmers for all those ingredients. Thanks for the post!

By the way, I'm making our New Year's Day meal tonight. Since I had to work yesterday, we couldn't have it then. I typically do make Hoppin' John but I'm not this time because we decided to go more keto/whole30 for the month... so no rice. I have a big pot of collards with ham, a small mess of black eyed peas, roasted turnips & sweet potatoes, and boneless center-cut pork chops.
["small mess of" is southern for a little bit of something - ha!]

My husband despises beans, lentils, anything mushy with a skin. We were in the grocery store a couple days ago and they had a huge display with piles and piles of bags of black-eyed peas. I told him I was going to cook him some for New Year's. He just stared at me in silent disgust and I told him he was no fun to tease.
Maybe you had to be there. Lol.
