When I close my eyes and listen to what she says it's closer to "fur" I think it may be differences in dialects/accents that results in differences as to how it's spelled, but I think we both are saying it the same and that it doesn't have an "ah" sound to it.
ETA: This is a good example of why we are probably seeing it spelled as both "fuh" and "fur". In the US, fur doesn't sounds like fuh, but it does sound like it when said with a British accent.

There are so many pho places that have names that purposely sound like fucking. I don't care. Exactly. This isn't the first by a long shot, and won't be the last. There are probably 20+ in my town. Ha! Not offensive and it made me laugh.
One of the places I go regularly for Pho is called "Mo Pho"
However if you pronounce "pho" correctly, it's FUR not F-OH That's what I was thinking. I wonder what people would think of our "Sex Drugs & Rice Paper Rolls" restaurant pjaye ? I have never heard anyone pronounce if "fur." The native Vietnamese speakers I know pronounce it closest to "fuh." Definitely no R sound.

I wonder what people would think of our "Sex Drugs & Rice Paper Rolls" restaurant pjaye ? They closed it! They still have the take away bar, and they are going to open another one further up the road...closer to me so that's good. But they have already painted over the sign and a new place has opened in their spot. On another note have you been to Banoi? they have two in the city, one at the Docklands end of Bourke st close to Southern Cross...worth checking out.

Accents do make a difference, and you are right, there isn't much difference, and the main point is that it isn't fa, or foe

But my friend from Laos says phah My Japanese friend says fah And my Vietnamese friend said it is pronounced phoe I think that some places want people to think it is fa so so they can name their restaurants , pho king Thai or pho Keene I would tread lightly with comments that seem to lump different cultures together simply based on geography. After all, just because a Spaniard and a German pronounce a French word one way doesn’t mean there isn’t a correct French pronunciation.

And it is very close to my work - I'm at the corner of Bourke and King. I usually eat at a little Vietnamese cafe / restaurant just up from Southern Cross on Bourke St, called Dot Spot. I will definitely try Banoi next week, thanks for the recommendation.

You mentioned Southern Cross the other day so I thought that one might be closer. I go to that one when I have lunch with a friend who works at Docklands, but go to the CBD one if I'm in the city on my own. Try the vermicelli salt and pepper tofu at some stage, it's delicious.

I don't get it. Why is it supposed to be funny? pho is pronounced like "fu". I have run into restaurants named Pho King, which would be pronounced like "fu"-king. At least Pho Keene is better than Pho King.

The words - not offensive.ade me smile to be honest. The image is more edgy on that score.

I think that the people who are offended by this name are offended by just about everything.

Not outraged or even offended, but the intent is there. Seems rather juvenile, unless you are into middle school humor. Not professional, and I'm really kind of sad that society in general thinks this "clever" use of the F word is cute and acceptable. It's everywhere you see Pho restaurants.

Not offend but I come a town that has a Thai place called Phu-Ket and a Chinese food place called Pu Pu. The threshold is pretty high in town

Not offensive but immature.
I imagine it appeals to those that enjoy The Three Stooges and fart jokes. Not my cuppa, but there are plenty out there that might be amused enough to try out the restaurant.

There are a number of Pho King restaurants near me. Captain Obvious craves better double entendres!

The Pho jokes are literally sophomoric. Highschool students here form crews or squads for major events (Homecoming, Prom, Fall Ball or Spring Fling, etc), with matching tee shirts for the after-school portion of the activity. You can guarantee at least one crew will have Sofa King Gone or Pho Keen (with logo like Keen shoes) as their tee shirt slogan.

Not the way they make it over here, it gets served with a side plate of bean sprouts, a lemon wedge and a handful of Thai basil which I love. I don't like cilantro (which is called coriander here) and I've never had it served with Pho at any of the places I've gone to. If they use it to make the main soup stock then they don't use much of it because I can't specifically taste it. Thai basil can be harder to get and I get crabby if I just get a few leaves...I always eat as much as they put on the plate. Have you tried it? Totally different to coriander/cilantro which tastes oddly metallic to me.
