I am looking for the best brand of white gesso to use on my scrapbook layouts, something that is the least gritty of the brands on the market. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you for any and all help!

I bought Golden brand at Michaels after hearing a YouTuber recommend it. I’ve never used another brand so can’t compare.

I have Golden and Liquitex Professional. The Liquitex Professional is my favorite. You want to get the blue bottle. Not the white bottle with circles by Liquitex. That is Liquitex Basics and VERY gritty and awful. Yes to the one on the left; no to the one on the right.    |

I use Golden and Liquitex in the bottle as well Beware, the Liquitex Basics (bad gesso) comes in a bottle too. Check the labels as posted in the photos above. |

I like a coat of gesso over my art journal page to start with because i like the extra "heft" (for lack of a better word) on the paper. |

Without the gesso, the paint absorbs into the paper. With the gesso, it doesn't do that as well. A lot of people (including myself) use gesso as their white paint also. Works great. I use white paint too but whatever is closest gets used. Sometimes I water the gesso down a bit if I want a more "sheer" look. I would do that if I am trying to tone down a darker paint. Also, if you have a bold patterned paper and want to tone that down, you can put some watered down gesso on it too. I don't ever use it with stencils. It's just to prep my pages really or serve as white paint. |

Modeling paste is too stiff. I used it recently, use it once in a while, but do prefer the paint or gesso. |

I prefer Golden's to Liquitex. I find the Liquitex too watery, and I prefer my gesso to be a little on the thick side.

Changing the subject a little: where to find clear gesso? Is that a thing? I thought I heard Missy Whidden say that is what she was putting down, and it did not look like regular white gesso.

The clear gesso by Ranger (linked above) is very smooth and creamy not gritty at all.
