I am on the board of a new non-profit. I'd love to get any advice you may have - things to look out for, etc.

I work for a non-profit. If they are really small ask if they carry insurance that covers the board. If someone was to sue- injury, dog bite, abuse, they can go After the board members.
also ask if they expect board members to make a large donation. Dh sits on a YMCA board and they are included in the fundraising every year.

I'm on the board of a non-profit and we do have insurance on both the executive board and the board of directors. There are sue happy people, but so far we haven't encountered many. It's nice to know the insurance is there. Be prepared to put in more hours than you expect.

I'm a lawyer. I would not sit on ANY board without adequate D&O insurance. I just wouldn't.

Thanks everyone. I'm new to non-profits so I'm trying to make sure I don't expose myself to unnecessary liability while also making sure I'm able to help as much as possible.

One thing to remember is that the board is there to guide, and the staff is there to handle day to day business. It is not the board's responsibility to make personnel decisions. The board approves the budget as recommended by staff, approves purchases over a certain amount and sets mission and policy. The staff execute the policies. Oh, and the board recruits for fundraising, too.
