My lips have been crazy inflamed and chapped since November. I've tried everything...lip balm, Aquaphor for lips, Cerave Healing Ointment, etc. Exfoliating seems to make them worse, so I've stopped that. It's been about 2 months since I've used Burt's Bees, because it's too irritating.
It seems like my lips are peeling thru a new layer every few days. I have mild eczema and psoriasis in other locations, so I am wondering if this is related.
Any ideas for really severe chapped lips before I see a dermatologist?

It’s probably allergy related. The allergy medicine I’m taking twice a day cured my problems. Could also be a be a food sensitivity.

Have you tried Vaseline? I read somewhere it’s good for eczema. It’s been the best for dry areas. I prefer regular Aquaphor over the lip one.
Do you have any oral sensitivity? My friends mouth was very inflamed including her lips and was put on a course of prednisone which fixed it.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream is my go to skin saver. Been using it for over 40 years. I have mild Eczema and Psoriasis outbreaks too.

Blistex cream in the tube is the best thing I found for chapped lips. I too accurate years ago which causes extreme dry lips and my dermatologist recommended it.

When this happens to me I use my eczema medicine on the skin right around my lips. Happens once or twice a winter for me.

I've had a reaction to toothpaste before. For some reason it made the skin around my lips all red and itchy and severely chapped. Could it be something like that? It only happened in winter and it happened two years in a row. I'm not sure why since I've still been using the same toothpaste and it doesn't affect me now.

Dermatologist, first. It sounds like something more than run-of-the-mill chapped lips.
I swear by Carmex- all forms - for winter chapped lips. Nothing comes close.

Sounds more like an allergy.
You might try some pepcid and a zyrtec or claritin and then another pepcid with a benadryl at night. I think a lanolin-based product might work better around your mouth vs something like chap-stick product. Avoid anything with alcohol in it. I would also try to change your toothpaste and get one w/out SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate.
If you are not getting some relief after 2-3 days of the pepcid / benadryl combo and switching your toothpaste, go see your PMD / dermatologist. You might benefit from a steroid.
BTW... pepcid is a histamine blocker (H2) and works in combo with the zyrtec / benadryl (H1 blocker).
edit: could be an allergy and/or your eczema. I would avoid any harsh cleansers / soaps for now. A hydrocortisone cream may give you some relief.

My lips can get terrible. When they get to that point that normal lip stuff aren't maintaining them, I use polysporin on my lips for a couple of days. I used it before by accident (wrong tube!) but it worked like nothing else I have ever tried. Don't know why it works, but it does and that's good enough for me I have used my eczema ointment as well and it helped with the pain but not the dryness or cracks.

You were going to laugh; but a YouTuber suggested using Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream on your lips. I did last year and my lips were never chapped.

So your body makes its own oil. Rub your finger behind your ears or beside your nose. Rub that oil on your lips.

I have a small tube in my bag for that purpose. I swear by this too - I'm allergic to many chapsticks and this is the only thing that doesn't make it worse. I traveled with friends last year and they all laughed but after two days of brutal cold they begged to try some since I was the only one without chapped skin! It works on any chapped skin.

If I were you I'd go to the dermatologist first. What you have described sounds like more than just chapped lips like elaine said.
I have very dry lips because I have hypothyroid. I've looked for years for the perfect lip balm. My all time favorite is Dr. Bonner's Organic Lip Balm. I like the Peppermint flavor but then I've only found that one and unflavored at my local Whole Foods. This lip balm is very moisturizing because it contains a lot of different oils and a bit of beeswax. Most of the other lip balms I've tried have so much beeswax in them that they make my lips feel dry and coated in wax instead of adding moisture to them which is what I want.
I wish you the best in finding a solution and hope you feel better soon.

I would not use Burt's bee or anything with beeswax or cera alba... also found in EOS lip balm. Gives me big allergic reaction to propolis. Propolis also found in mascara. Try a topical steroid cream and vaseline and double dose of benadryl. The derm can prescribe a more potent steroid if needed.

I haven't breast feed in 15 years but this cream is still a staple in my purse. Works very well on extremely dry skin and lips

I had something like This last year but not as severe. I figured it was a fungus. I had some anti-fungal cream so I used it for a week or two and had relief. Go to the dermatologist. We nurses are renowned for self-diagnose and treatment. Frankly it’s not that smart of us.
I hope you find relief soon.

My daughter suffered from severe chapped lips. Come to find out it was allergy related - coconut, bees wax, nuts, and high histamine foods that are found in lip balms, lip stick, ect.
She had to let her lips heal on their own and then could use vaseline. Took about 2 months. Applying anything during healing would have only irritated it more.

I used new toothpaste once and my lips peeled like crazy. Never had such chapped lips as I did then. I just got medicated burts bees. I also have used neosporin and hydrocortisone ointment mixed in the past.

I have found that I can only use Carmex. Anything else, including lipstick causes a red, painful rash.
