Over the moon to find out my DS and DIL are expecting my first grandchild in July. The only problem for me is that they live in UK and I live in Seattle so is there any Pea wisdom in how to handle not seeing your grandchild on a regular basis?

Congratulations! My gds is in the UK and I'm in Spain. I get What's App pictures most weekends. I've seen her once as there are other problems. I try hard not to be too close as I just upset myself. You have to accept you can never really be that close. It's just a fact. I've never meet my 2 grandsons but that's another story

I’m so happy for you! Being a Mimi has been amazing.
Sorry, the only advice I have is...MOVE!! My dd lived in Florida (I’m in Massachusetts) when she had dgd. Due to a relationship that turned very bad she had to leave and we benefit because dgd and dd live with us. My dh and I love that little one more than I ever knew possible.

Congratulations, being a grandparent is an amazing thing. I can't offer specific advise but I'm sure you'll work hard at having as much contact as possible by any means possible!

Congratulations! Skype and FaceTime make situations like this so much easier these days, though I know they’re no substitute for real time together.

Skype or other video chat apps are great.
I used to read my granddaughter bedtime stories over the phone. I also frequently send my grands packages. It doesn't have to be expensive, except for shipping.
Congratulations

Congratulations!!! Grands are the best. We live in SW FL and our grands live in Oregon. Add to that the fact that I don't fly (bad experience, I'm done), and it's hard. They have come here for a month for the past 4 years. We have driven there twice and considering going again this summer. Like others have said, Skype and Face Time are life savers. Our grands are 5 and 3 now. We will read books to them via Skype often, DGD will perform a 'play' (that kid is a ham for sure!), we've even played a new game they got with Skype - they rolled the die and we told them what we wanted to do. They love it, and so do we. Although there's nothing like a good ol' hug - still no way to accomplish that over Skype! Ours left here Wednesday morning after a month here, and I feel like something is missing - and it's way too quiet here!

Congrats! Grandkids are way better than regular kids. When I was growing up, we spent summers with our grandparents on the opposite coast. When my kids were young, my mom and stepdad lived several states away. They visited regularly, but my kids would also go spend a week with them (without us) in the summer. Bottom line, long visits with no parents around help a lot.

FaceTime or Skype as much as you can! I lived far away from my parents and my husbands parents when our kids were born. We Skyped all the time from birth so that they would be used to the sound of their voices and the sight of them. Then when we finally were able to visit in person it took less time for he kids to warm up to them. 😁

Congratulations!
Visit as much as possible and maintain contact via FT, Skype of whatever technology is next, between visits. It doesn't replace the real life snuggles & cuddles but helps avoid the shyness and lets you jump right in to the next visit. It gets easier as they get older, which happens all too quickly.

i have two granddaughters 7 hours away
it's different an an ocean away but still kinda sucks
we see them a minimum of every six weeks - one of our families make the trip
other than that - facetime everyday and tons of photos
for the baby - i record myself reading books and singing her songs

Congratulations! Being a grand is wonderful. For us, Skype keeps us up-to-date on our 3 grandchildren in Ohio.

Congratulations! My only grandchild is 10 hours away (by car), so not an insurmountable distance, but his daddy is in the military and will be changing duty stations in a few months, taking them further away. We visit via Alexa Show and Skype (mostly Alexa, though). Also, my DIL is absolutely fabulous about sending us pictures, videos, and texts almost daily with little snippets of what's going on. DGS will be 2yo in July and while we've missed a lot of cuddles and snuggles, we've been able to be a part of so much thanks to DS, DIL, and technology. (Mostly DIL managing the tech, I have to say.)
