My nails are so weak. I don’t get manicures because even the gel cracks off as my nails bend.
I keep them short, just a little bit over the edge of the nail bed. They bend and peel like nuts.
Any suggestions to strengthen them? I would love to have nicely manicured nails, but it isn’t worth the money if they are just going to crack within a day.

Oil your cuticles! When I take care of my cuticles it’s super noticeable.

Take Biotin. Consistently. It will take several months to see a change.

I have heard consuming gelatin works. My sisters and I would mix unflavored powdered gelatin with orange juice and drink it. Not sure it really helped.

Keeping mine very well oiled and never bare has helped me a lot.
I use solar oil on my cuticles and under the free edge a couple of times a day, and then coat my nails in it when I'm switching polishes and they're bare. I brush on a heavy coat of oil, massage it in, let it sit about 15 minutes, then buff the excess off very thoroughly with a Kleenex or soft cloth.
And proceed on with a manicure. A treatment (Nailtiques formula 2 because my nails bend, peel, and tear), a ridge filling base coat (smooths nail surface and helps polish adhere), whatever polish I want, then a top coat.
I always wrap/brush the products over the edge. Not only helps prevent tip wear but protects the edges from chipping and tearing.
And keeping them filed into oval shape helps an awful lot. Squared and squoval nails just gave a corner and straight line to catch and bump against things. The curve of the oval seems much more structurally sound and they rarely tear or peel from the sides any longer.
I don't have long nails but they are long enough to keep well manicured now. Medium at most, I can maintain about 1/4 inch free edge length. Which is as long as my lifestyle allows really.

I take vitamin D during the winter months and notice that my nails grow like crazy and they’re very strong.

I have long, hard nails all year long until around December and then they start to crack and peel. I don't do any type of professional manicures- just Zoya polish for the most part. It doesn't matter how much I baby them -every winter they go weak on me. I posted about this a couple of years ago ago and a pea recommended Nailtiques. This stuff is great. There are several different types. I order the Formula 2 Plus. I apply a coat everyday for about 4-5 days and then remove and start over. I don't do any polish for about 2 weeks. Then I apply 2 coats, then polish. I agree with the Biotin and Solar oil, too. With these 3 steps, your nails should be beautiful!

I’ve had thin, bendy nails my whole life. I’ve tried a lot of things but to be honest, getting SNS on my nails has been consistently the best way to get good looking nails. It’s a bit expensive, but I don’t spend a lot of money on self maintenance anyway so I’m ok with it. They have so many beautiful colors I look forward to getting my nails done now.

I swear by Pink Armour. You can usually find it in the "As Seen on TV Section" in retail stores. It really does work - my nails are think and strong when I use it. What is SNS?

Take Biotin supplement. Works on growing strong nails from the inside. Versus trying to put a strengthening polish on an already weak nail. Mine were always soft or breaking. Been taking Biotin for a few years and they've been hard ever since.

It's the dip powder manicure. It's supposed to help strengthen your nails. I had my first one in mid-December at DD's suggestion (she started them because she's a nail biter). The color hasn't chipped at all a month later. I also haven't broken a nail. My nails have finally grown out for the first time in years. I had tried pretty much all the remedies suggested here and nothing really worked. I plan to have another one this next week.

Thanks **GypsyGirl** - that sounds great. Totally worth the expense when it lasts the way it does.

I take a supplement that has biotin and collagen, and it has been a game changer for my nails and hair. I usually have to cut my nails because they can get too long, and I have never had to do that before. I have always had pretty thin, weak nails. It does take a while to see a difference though. I think it has even had a positive impact on my skin, but that is harder to tell if it is that or that I started using Meaningful Beauty skincare around the same time I started using the supplements. I also use an Essie cuticle oil once a day as well as some other cuticle cream a couple of times a day. It takes regular effort, but it is worth it.

nailtiques formula 2+ is my favorite. I've tried the OPI nail envy and did not like it, it didn't work for me.

I have been getting dips at the salon for about 2 months-- I am amazed how good my nails look and how strong they are! I have always had thin nails that tore easily-- even trying many of the suggestions above. I did acrylics for years and they were worse when I decided to stop with the acrylics. The dip makes me happy! And not thick like some acrylic nails were....

I have been eating Paleo for about a year now. During the year I started using powdered collagen. I put a scoop in my coffee every morning. I swear that stuff has done so much good for my joints, gut health and my hair & nails. My hair has always grown fast and now I almost can't keep up with it. My nails went through a bad time where they also peeled. Now they are so strong, I almost can't cut them with clippers and they grow really fast.
I use Vital Proteins just in case you are interested.

I’ve been taking collagen protein (vital proteins is the brand I like) and it has made a huge difference in my nails pretty quickly. They don’t peel and break like they used to do. I can grow them past my fingertips too!

You might not want to go this way, but I knew I was pregnant with my second when I slammed my finger in the car door and my nail didn't break. It was my first pregnancy and I was shocked I didn't lose the nail. Or you could try what other people are recommending if that isn't for you.

I get the unflavored one (blue container) and stir it into my coffee. If you live near a Sprouts market, they have individual packets that you can buy and try.
