The facts:
- our dogs (two 50 lb mutts) knocked down a panel of fencing and ran into neighbor's yard - I called them back over, they came immediately - neighbor has a Bernese Mountain Dog who was not in yard at the time - neighbor's mom was at the house and came out to see the fence - we were looking at the panel, figuring out what to do to stabilize it - one of our dogs was excited and jumped up against the fence - his mouth was open and he hit neighbor's mom in the head - she got a scratch on her forehead and a puncture on the bridge of her nose - it wasn't an aggressive bite, he didn't close his mouth at all, wasn't growling or barking, he was excited and jumped up - neighbor's mom ended up going to urgent care because of the puncture, had it cleaned, had some glue stitches applied, was put on antibiotics and was given a tetanus shot - neighbor's mom was entirely gracious the whole time - because it was a dog bite, doctor had to report it - neighbor's mom continues being gracious, apologizes that report had to be filed - police stopped by, mandatory court date because injury was sustained - animal control came by, verified dog had current vaccinations - dog placed on 10 day in-home quarantine - quarantine completed, no issues - court date is next week
Look at this from any angle you can think of... is there any question about whether or not I should offer to pay urgent care bill?

I would offer to pay if their insurance didn’t cover it.

Good God, just pay it. And then get some training for your dogs and yourself. They knocked down a fence. You then failed to secure the dogs before doing anything else.

I would pay her out of pocket bills for her. And fix her fence.
A very similar situation happened to my boyfriend before we met. He paid this woman’s medical bills.

There's absolutely no question in my mind. If not for your dog, the neighbor wouldn't have ended up in urgent care.
Personally, I would pay *immediately* if possible, that way you can show it when you go to court next week - I would think a judge would be more lenient about charging you a fine if you prove you've taken responsibility for an incident that was caused by your dog(s).

My dog (since passed) nipped someone and I offered to pay everything out of pocket. I think you should do the same and probably bring her flowers.
Since the urgent care had to glue stitch her up, it was not small.
Just like with you, everything was reported and we were up-to-date on everything. Beside the doctor for the nipped person (who came on our property), no one followed up with anything. I didn't know the people too well, but they were super gracious and that was years ago and we never had another issue. I can't believe the police followed up with you in this circumstance, particularly since the dog was not aggressively biting. I have a springer spaniel who JUMPS now and I do worry about this.
It sounds like you do the right thing and you'll be fine. Good luck at that hearing!

As an owner of two rambunctious dogs-
Yes, I would pay it and bend over backwards to ensure that my neighbors were satisfied with my response. I would also get reinforced fencing around the yard to prevent it happening again. Had it been a child who was injured by your dog, the consequences could have been worse.

Good God, you don't know my stance. I'm asking for your opinion, not rudeness. Exactly. Why on earth be so rude Prenticekid? My dogs are trained and will immediately come when called and stay and whatever. However, in this circumstance, I can see them doing the exact same thing as OP's. And OP? I understand completely why you made a fake name. Someone would remember this and be rude to you if you ever had a dog question again.

I had something similar happen. My dog scratched a guy, but they claimed she bit him... she didn't, I was standing right there when it happened. I just paid the urgent care bill... even though the guy put his hand in an area where it said not to do it.
Now, in your situation, I don't see how any of that is her fault even a little bit. It's the least you could do to make right.

I would pay for it. Accidents happen, but it’s the right thing to do, and would help keep a good relationship with them.

Look at it this way. If your neighbor was holding your toddler, who then bonked her with a toy and needed medical care, would you offer to pay for that? Same thing in my eyes.
I can see how a dog’s tooth scraped your neighbor (vs a bite). I’d also follow up with some training to teach your dogs not to jump on people. Not in greeting and not in play. I can completely see my lab being all excited that a neighbor was interacting with her, but she was taught not to jump on people from day one. It’s a hard habit to break, but it can be done.

Thank you all for you responses. I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. My husband did not want to offer to pay at all. Then decided a compromise of offering to pay half would be ok. I've explained to him that paying ALL of it is the right thing to do. Period. It's insane.
I told neighbor that we want to pay it. I'm sure husband is not happy that I did that. Aaaggghh! It's the ONLY thing to do.
That he did not immediately see that paying was the right thing do is really bothering me.

Pay the urgent care bill immediately so you have proof for court.
Have a fence rebuilt now. This week. Make it happen and pay it entirely. Take photos of fence, along with proof of payment.
Enroll dog(s) in obedience training and bring proof to court.
You need to own that the incident was your fault, even though an accident, and show proof that you are doing all in your power to rectify it, and that it can't happen again.

Of course you should pay the entire bill and to have the fence fixed. Whether it was intentional or any number of other scenarios, it boils down to *your* dogs were not under your control and did damage. You are responsible.

You are doing the right thing by offering to pay. And if they decline insist to pay. Sorry but I think you pay to have the fence repaired.
