I ran out one time.. my kids were babies. I put it off too long because back then you could not pay at the pump and I did not want to drag babies out of the car in to pay for gas in the cold. A very kind grandmotherly lady helped me. She ended up loving my children so much that she asked if she could knit them blankets!! They were so pretty!!

I’ve never run out, and can’t understand people who do either. Filling my tank doesn’t even take the length of a song on the radio for my car. Who doesn’t have time for that? Only if people are traveling and run out on the interstate or something similar, because they think they can make it to the next stop. But even then....really? I don't mind filling it in the summer so much, but the last time I filled it up, my nipples could have cut diamonds. My old neighbor convinced me that I shouldn't get back in my car when filling it up (firefighter who said it could cause a fire) so I stand out there in the elements. But I have never run out, so I don't worry too much.

It drives me crazy when people let their gas get low, I know for my dd it is a money thing. I am frequently giving her $ for gas but she drives 50 miles to school everyday and only works minimal hours. When she comes to the house my DH (her stepdad) will take her car and fill the tank, check the oil, fill the washer fluid and check her tires. She has a newer car, but with money being tight until she finishes school, maintenance isn’t always her priority. DH is a car guy so does what he can to help her. What a sweetie!

I did it once, when I had just got my licence, and I had to get my dad to bring me some petrol to put in my car. He was pretty annoyed with me for being so careless, and I've never done it again!! Mind you, I like to push the boundaries. A quarter of a tank is still practically full as far as I'm concerned and I don't start panicking until the petrol gauge tells me that I have only 12km worth of petrol left and I am 15 km from home. The closest I have come to running out of petrol since that first and only time in 1986 was a couple of months ago. I needed to get petrol on the way to work. I was about 20 minutes from home and 35 minutes from work. I pulled into the petrol station and realised that I'd left my wallet at home. I went inside and asked the guy if I could get my DSO to ring through with a credit card payment over the phone, but he said he couldn't do that. He suggested that I drive home to get my wallet, but I was on about 3km to empty, there was no way I was going to make it home. He suggested that I ring someone to come and bring me money, but there was no-one home to do that. I ended up going to my car and scraping together as much loose change as I could find, and managed to get $7 - barely enough to get me to work. Then I borrowed money from a colleague to get more petrol on the way home.

I planned ahead this week and made sure I got gas when it was about 15 the other day. If I’d have waited to my normal low tank warning it would have been tomorrow....

I've never run out...yet. I used to never let it go very far under 1/4 tank, but my van doesn't have markings so mentally it doesn't bother me to get all the way down to where the gas light comes on. I grocery shop at a chain that offers gas money discounts so the higher the discount I have the lower I want my tank to be to make it worthwhile (just today I filled up for $0.01/gallon!!!) The closest we've come to running out of gas was once or twice on vacation when DH wasn't paying close enough attention to the gas gauge until the light came on--and then I was looking on a map at how far away the next exit was.

When I started driving, my step-dad drilled into my head: "It's just as easy to fill up at 1/4 tank as it is to fill up at 1/16 or less". So I've always filled up at 1/4 tank, and have never run out of gas in my 40+ years of driving.

Well, when I was younger something malfunctioned in my gas tank and it ran out of gas but still read 1/3 of a tank. Called my father to come help me & when he couldn’t start it he opened the gas tank and it made a loud sucking noise and then the guage read E

I know people that know exactly how far they can drive with the meter in empty and do so. Some people are comfortable living on the edge.

I hate getting gas....my Explorer has some weird thing that causes the pump to shut off every. five. seconds. SO annoying! Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't and when it happens, it makes me so frustrated! The fix is $150 and I'm too cheap to get it done. ha ha! Have you tried not sticking the nozzle in completely all the way? I had a car that would do that and my Dad said to back the nozzle out a good bit and it worked like a charm. Although if you had it looked at, it could be something different. I have never run out of gas but have been darn close. Now I just fill up when the light comes on. Yes, I've tried everything. It likes to lull me into a false sense of success and fills right up to 22 gallons with no stops one time and then, bam! the next time it goes back to it's 15¢ at a time fill-up. UGH!

DH got caught once with his last truck where the computer said he had 50 miles to empty and he ran out on the side of the highway. Thankfully he called a friend to come rescue him so I didn’t have to. Since then, his motto is, “It’s just as easy to fill up at a quarter tank as it is when the red light is on.” The light on my current car doesn’t come on until I’m 35 miles to empty, and that’s cutting it too close for me. I can’t imagine getting stranded somewhere at night especially if my kid was with me or in the winter when it could be dangerously cold (like today).
Knock on wood, I haven’t ever run out but I have come close a time or two when I was younger and poorer. Now I don’t have any excuse and it would annoy DH to have to come save me (plus he would never let me live that down) so I always fill it up sooner than later. I like to fill up at Costco where it’s cheaper and where I get better credit card rewards on gas, so I either make a point to top off the tank when I’m in that area or I plan to fill up when I’m there anyway to shop which is usually once a week or so. The two Costcos on my side of town are in convenient places where I tend to have other places I go to close by several times a week so it works for me.

I've never run out either, but I've been down to where it's told me I have 20 miles left once. Generally, I fill up when I'm at half a tank though occasionally it's 1/4.

My DH just ran out of gas yesterday. He pushes it often. He ran out in the parking lot of the gas station. He had to buy a $20 gas can. As soon as his light comes on I pay attention and start looking for gas. He gets irritated but I’d rather that than him being pissed of due to running out of gas. I ran out of gas a few times when I was younger. I ran out of gas in my moms car once, her warning light never came on. And I ran out once in a rental car that apparently the light didn’t work either

I don't like getting gas either, but I try to fill up when I get to a quarter tank, because I worry about what might happen if there's a crisis like a wildfire or a loved one goes the hospital, where there's not time to stop for gas. I think just for emergency preparedness alone, it's good to fill up before you get so low.

I came close once. I was driving in an unfamiliar town so I didn’t know where the gas stations were (this was before cellphones). But I knew where they where in the next town. So I kept driving and just barely made it to the gas station. The “E” was lit up. Lol!
Now a days, I fill up when there is a 1/4 tank left. But sometimes it is a pain because the gas station I like is one direction and lots of time I am going in the opposite direction. For some reason, getting gas is my least favorite errand.
Ever since we had that massive blackout a few years ago, I make sure I have enough gas to make a round trip to and from work. Lot of my coworkers were stranded because the gas pumps wouldn’t work without electricity.

I ran out of gas once when 8 months pregnant with DS and 18 month old DD in the backseat. The low gas light decided to stop working on my car. I knew the tank was low, but thought I had at least a gallon and was heading to the next city where they still had full service only gas stations. I always tried to fill up there. This was before pay at the pump and you had to schlep your toddler in to pay at the cashier. Fortunately I was within pushing distance of a gas station when I ran out. We made it about halfway when someone told me to get in and steer and he pushed me the rest of the way. A few weeks ago DH & I dropped DD off at LAX. We knew we didn't have enough gas to get home and planned to stop in San Clemente but were too busy talking and realized about 6-7 miles north of Oceanside we forgot to stop. Our range was "0 miles" and we held our breath for a few minutes because there is no where to stop until we get to Oceanside.

Gas gauge can get stuck and not function properly. If it has always been reliable before the person may not know until too late.

Hoping that I don’t jinx myself!
I started watching my trip odometer—I fill up completely, set my trip odometer to 0000, and then I drive. I reset it at each fill up ( I always fill my tank, never do the $10-$20 )
Over time, I’ve learned exactly how many miles I can go, and I don’t get antsy when my low fuel ⛽️ light comes on if I’m not close to the miles I tracked. I have about 50-75 miles of gas once my fuel light pops on!
Once I pushed it to where my hubby pumped 21 gallons into my 20 gallon tank! Lol he said it had to be running on fumes!!!
Now in the last 6 months, I’ve rescued my sibling 4x after running out of gas, and filled their tank another 4 times after hearing them talk about low on gas/not having any $. 🤨

At one time, I had an minivan that I drove til the 'wheels fell off' -- seventeen years with almost 250K mileage. For the last 5-6 years I had it, the gas gauge did not work. I used the trip odometer to track how many miles I had driven since the last fill-up. That drove my husband crazy. It was just one of the many 'quirks' that van had! My husband and kids begged me to let it go and I finally did a few years ago. It had become a perversion with me to keep it and drive it in spite of everyone's aspersions toward it. In that van, I did run out of gas one time... that's how I discovered the gas gauge no longer worked. Lol. This is exactly what is happening at our house right now....I love my truck but it’s 16 years old, in excellent condition for its age, has 175,000 miles and every one in my family including my siblings are telling me to get a new car! I fix the things that need to get done, our mechanic always says what a great truck it is and holds up. What keeps me from going is just The thought of going to deal with a salesman stresses me out. (I also love not having any debt!) I might break down this spring and finally get a new one, but I think I’m going to try to convince hubby to use part of savings to pay for it so no debt! Fingers crossed 🤞!!!

I have never run out of gas but I do like to push it. I just hate taking the time, getting out in the cold/heat etc. It's just a pain to deal with. My Jeep tells me how many miles until I think about 15-20 miles and then it just says very low. Once it gets to that point, I fill it up. I used to have a VW that told me down to five miles left. I let it get that close a few times. ETA-It's funny because in every other way I am an anxiety ridden person who does NOT like to live on the edge. I guess letting my gas tank get low is my idea of living on the wild side!

I have a low fuel light, but I wish my car told m exactly how many miles I have left. Google it. There's a chart that I saw one time that had make/model listed and how many miles are really left when your car indicates there you can drive 0 miles- or the red light comes on or whatever your indication is. I hate pumping gas so I tend to wait as long as possible and thanks to the handy chart mentioned above I saw that my car still has 3 gallons in it when it says I have 0 miles left. Three gallons equals 60+ miles so I don't sweat it. I don't drive it around when it says 0 miles but I don't freak out either. I've never run out of gas but I have no doubt I've come very close!

I do. I have an unreliable gas gauge. It usually works, but sometimes it is way off. I gas up way more often than I probably need to since I don't trust it.

I can see how it happens. Something happens on the freeway and you are stuck in traffic, your gas gauge is broken, get lost or whatever. But in normal circumstances, I don't get it.

When I was in HS my father ran out and we had to walk a couple of rural miles in the cold. I vowed to never get in that situation. When money was a real problem, I'd put in $1 or $2 to prevent running out.
DH runs out pretty often. When I was pregnant, I threatened him if we didn't have plenty of gas when I went into labor. He is one who says "Car has 3 gallons when it says empty so........"
I never let it get below 1/4 of tank if I can help it.
If I had broken gauge--then I'd carry a little notebook and figure out the mileage to know when I should get worried. In the city sometimes we are in traffic jams and need to idle for a long time...

When we were younger, my bff would run out of gas. She’d always push it and get gas when absolutely necessary. I was with her 2x and I was pissed. The last time I was with her, she called her DH, then fiancée, he came out and told her it was the LAST time. He wasn’t kidding, next time she did it, he didn’t come out. As far as I know that was the last time. She has 4 kids now and she ain’t got time for that. Me...I get twitchy when I go below 1/2 a tank.

I ran out of gas when I was in high school, less than 2 miles from my house (we lived out in the country). Dad was less than thrilled when he brought me gas. It was the last time I ran out of gas. Dh has always been the type to fill up when it gets to 1/2 tank and that has finally rubbed off on me after 41 years.

I work from home, rarely drive anywhere and get gas about once a month. I sometimes forget that I need gas because I'm rarely in the car. Luckily, there is a gas station about a block away or I'd probably be screwed!
