I’m posting here bc the Peas are really good at helping me see both sides.
I was was just driving home on a 4 lane highway. Granted there are sporadic traffic lights for major intersections but the speed limit is 55. There was a man dumping gas in his car in the right lane! The gas station is in the left turn lane! It’s dark already! I had to look away bc I really don’t know how he didn’t get hit.
I get budgets and living check to check but it was a newer car so he definitely has a low fuel warning light. Gosh my car is 7 yrs old and it has a fuel light.
Thankful nothing has popped up on the local ems FB page.

I don't get it either. But I am one of those that gets panicky when my tank gets to 1/4 of tank. I really freak out if the low fuel light comes on.

When we were younger my husband ran out of gas many, many times. Yes, money was tight so he put it off as long as possible. But he’s also one of those “it won’t happen to me” thinkers even when it happened to him repeatedly. Drove me insane. eta: I just asked him and he said it was just procrastination and assuming “it would be fine.” Which makes zero sense to me since it happened so many times and several times he had to walk hours to get the gas and refill it. How is it worth the risk? I love the man, but sometimes I wanna shake him until his fillings rattle.

I’ve never run out of gas on the side of the road (I probably just cursed myself), but I’m not gonna lie, I like to see how far I can push it 🤣
I just hate getting gas. I’m always running barely on time and never want to stop.
I have a low fuel light, but I wish my car told m exactly how many miles I have left.
I definitely often get the needle on my gauge below the red empty line.

My new Volvo XC90 didn't have a low fuel indicator - it was a glitch in the system. I ran out of gas two times. Imagine being the rep on the other end of Volvo Help when they got me on the phone the second time . . .

The low fuel warning light comes on in our car with approx 15 gallons of gas in the car. It's really expensive to repair so we live with it but we are meticulous about setting the trip meter and fill up weekly.

I ran out of gas a few times as a teenager in high school. There were literally weeks where I had only $3 for gas and I did a lot of hoping and coasting. The last time I ran out of gas, I was near my best friend's grandmother's house. (I loved her to pieces and referred to her as my 'adopted grandma'.) Well, she did NOT appreciate me knocking on her door at 6:30 am, needing a ride to the gas station. She blistered me good for being an idiot to run out of gas. I've never run out of gas since, and that was almost 40 years ago.

At one time, I had an minivan that I drove til the 'wheels fell off' -- seventeen years with almost 250K mileage. For the last 5-6 years I had it, the gas gauge did not work. I used the trip odometer to track how many miles I had driven since the last fill-up. That drove my husband crazy. It was just one of the many 'quirks' that van had! My husband and kids begged me to let it go and I finally did a few years ago. It had become a perversion with me to keep it and drive it in spite of everyone's aspersions toward it. In that van, I did run out of gas one time... that's how I discovered the gas gauge no longer worked. Lol.

We’ve been tossing the idea of a new car around but it wasn’t until I typed out the OP that I realized my car is seven yrs old. Yikes! Dh said $1900 to replace the timing belt which is a 95,000 mile maintenance.

If the fuel light came on in my old vehicle, I knew I had 20-25 miles left to go. With my new swanky mobile, I can push a button and see how many miles I have left. A few weeks ago, I had 11 miles left and was waiting in a pretty long line at a red light. All of a sudden that 11 went straight to 1 (digital). I saw a 7-11 and swerved out of line into the that station. When I filled up my tank, it had .25 of a gallon left in it. Lesson learned. I will now not go below 15 miles left to go again. Now if I am on the interstate, I generally don't go below 20-25 miles.

My van has a low fuel warning light, but when I have the steering wheel and seat positioned where it is most comfortable for me to drive, the steering wheel blocks my line of sight to the fuel light and gas gauge. I have come ridiculously close to running out of gas on longer trips because it just sneaks up on me.
The car I drive most of the time tells me how many miles I have to go, and the fuel information is located where I can easily see it no matter where I have the steering wheel positioned. My low tire pressure indicator is another story, though. It’s pretty much where the fuel information is in the van.

Me neither. I have never run out of gas while driving. I have as a passenger and it makes me very stabby.

Poor planning! Or super distracted!
We get gas on discount days so I have pushed it but I’ll get a couple of gallons to tide me over.

I don't get it either - some people seem to get a thrill to run on fumes. I know someone that drives with the "Empty" warning light on at least 2 times a week but I never let it get below 1/4th a tank. We live in a city with a lot of traffic, it can literally take me 1 1/2 hours to drive 8 miles - why would I risk running out of gas? It just isn't worth it.

I have always pushed it and never run out of gas. I like to think of it as working on my mental math skills. If you fill it up every time it gets to 1/4 of a tank, you are filling it up 25% more than you need to. I hate to get gas, but thankfully gas stations are everywhere here.

I have once in my life.. that was how I learned the gas gauge wasn't working. It said I had half a tank. Since the husband drove it the most I had no reason to question the amount. We got the gauge fixed after that.
At one point we also owned a new car that the gauge only worked when the headlights were on high beam. We would have to remember to turn them on during longer trips to check the amount we had.

My daughter and her husband ran out of gas last month. He bought a used car in October but it’s a relatively newer Volvo. They drove it long distance for the first time and the indicator said they had seventy-something miles left until they got to our house. They ran out two miles away.
If it happens repeatedly I’d agree, but I can see how it happens.

I hate getting gas....my Explorer has some weird thing that causes the pump to shut off every. five. seconds. SO annoying! Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn't and when it happens, it makes me so frustrated! The fix is $150 and I'm too cheap to get it done. ha ha!
So, I wait as long as possible before getting gas just because of the annoyance factor. My car does tell me exactly how many miles I have left til empty and I know that there is still gas in it when it tells me "0" miles to go.

Was it a Subaru Outback? My ODS just bought one in August and he just got a recall notice that the low fuel indicator was faulty. Causing people to run out of gas.
To answer your question, they probably thought they had more time. Maybe got stuck in traffic which caused it to run out sooner. Just didn't pay any attention to gauge.

It drives me crazy when people let their gas get low, I know for my dd it is a money thing. I am frequently giving her $ for gas but she drives 50 miles to school everyday and only works minimal hours. When she comes to the house my DH (her stepdad) will take her car and fill the tank, check the oil, fill the washer fluid and check her tires. She has a newer car, but with money being tight until she finishes school, maintenance isn’t always her priority. DH is a car guy so does what he can to help her.

Sometimes I forget to look at the fuel gauge. That's how I've run out of gas. Especially if I think I will fill up in the morning and then forget to look at the fuel gauge in the morning and take off. I try not to put it off if I know it is low.

Have you tried not sticking the nozzle in completely all the way? I had a car that would do that and my Dad said to back the nozzle out a good bit and it worked like a charm. Although if you had it looked at, it could be something different. I have never run out of gas but have been darn close. Now I just fill up when the light comes on.

The least expensive place is 20 minutes from my house. So I try to fill up when I have errands that way. Sometimes that means I’m pushing it a bit.
But I’ll stop and put a little money in at the other stations before I’ll push too far. It’s too Scary
I ran out twice when the kids were little and we had an old car. Not fun at all. I once showed up drenched in rain, 9 months pregnant, with 3 toddlers in tow, at some stranger’s door. To their credit, the first house I approached graciously helped me.

I’ve never run out, and can’t understand people who do either. Filling my tank doesn’t even take the length of a song on the radio for my car. Who doesn’t have time for that?
Only if people are traveling and run out on the interstate or something similar, because they think they can make it to the next stop. But even then....really?

I like to push it too (try not to in the winter dh is a worrier and it drives him crazy when I have less than a quarter tank left 🙄) This week I’m driving a rental and kept waiting for the low fuel light to come on when I finally noticed it was on but I couldn’t see it because the position of the steering wheel blocked it 😳. I stopped at the next station because I had no idea how long it’s been on and even though my 2008 tells me how many miles I have left this 2018 rental apparently doesn’t.

Well. I will admit that I do. Until a few weeks ago, I was crazy busy all the time. I was a single parent to three kids in numerous activities. We don't have family around here and their dad never went to their games, so I was determined not to miss them. Between work and their activities and crazy little things like getting groceries, I was ALWAYS running low on gas. I have maybe run out of gas 4 times in the past 18 years. One time, I will blame on my son, who was 15 and driving. He drove to his school and I took the car and headed to work and promptly ran out of gas. My son had adjusted the wheel so it was exactly covering the yellow empty gas light. I am trying to do better, but I hate getting gas. I am hoping not to run out before getting some on the way to work tomorrow! kluski I have two XC90s and could not love them more. They are the best car out there!! If you are near Central VA, I will give you some incredible information on getting a good deal on one. PM me if you are. People drive 6 hours to go to my dealer.
