OH man... what a bummer for Roger. Broke his foot during Saturday rehearsal and most of the live broadcast is from Saturday's filming.

My understanding is that it's a mess. I'm West coast so it's hasn't aired yet). They're showing a dress rehearsal, and as expected, everyone was saving their voices for tonight. I feel terribly for everyone involved in this production.
Blown away that they aren't prepared with standbys or understudies in case of injury or illness. This is a live production people <eyeroll>.

It’s pretty bad.
Not Jesus Christ Superstar bad, but not good.
It’s just too smiley/clean/disneyfied for the material. It’s lost its character and grit by sanitizing it too much for prime time.

I don’t think it’s a mess at all. I’ve seen RENT several times and this is actually quite good. There are a few tougher spots in full ensemble sound mixing, but overall it’s a solid production. Keala Settle’s solo in Seasons of Love was awesome.
I think people expect movie level or cast recording sound mixing when on TV, but it’s still live (and a dress rehearsal at that).
Compared to Sound of Music live, it’s a fucking masterpiece.

I'm not expecting cast recording level quality, but I've seen the show live on tour twice and both were much better than that. I turned it off after LVB, which was just sad.

I missed them saying most of this is from the dress rehearsal. I thought some of the vocals were a bit off, but all things considered I think it's been ok. I listened to the cast recording all the time for a while back and saw the first touring production when it came to MN. I had not thought about the storyline in so long. Thank God so many advancements have been made in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

I think Angel is a weak spot, sadly. But I’m down for the rest, mostly. It’s very closely following the school’s edition’s edits & cuts.

It's bad luck what happened to "Roger" and some vocal performers are definitely superior to others but still glad to see network tv take risks and air these Broadway shows. I am fortunate to live close to NYC but not everyone has that opportunity. And also to think how far society has progressed in last decade or so with advances in HIV and public acceptance I find hope even in the dark political times we are living in.

Ok. I cried at the end. When the original cast was there. That was amazing.
I do think this is the best of the Live musicals they’ve tried to do by far. Not that it was great, but all the others have been horrible.
I think they benefited immensely by casting all actors and not trying to throw in a random famous singer who’s never done a musical before (side eyes at you, JCS).

I didn’t like it either, was very disappointing.
The broadway version—phenomenal
The tv version—-Disney-esque

Broadway Across America is currently touring with Rent. We’ve seen it on Broadway, and with this tour and thought it was excellent. It’ll be in Houston in August.

Didn’t JCS win a bunch of awards? I think the best ones so far has been grease and JCS.

I thought the set was really cool… And how they filmed the whole thing. But I was not impressed at all with the singing— especially Angel. But I suppose no one was ever going to live up to the original Broadway cast..

I have never seen it live. So I’m really enjoying it. I have found Angel to be a weak link, which is too bad.
It’s good enough that I watched an East Coast feed and now I’m watching it again on my local feed.

As non-steller as this production is, it's bringing back so many memories for me! I used to work for the local Broadway promoter and the excitement for this show was incredible when it started touring. There are very few shows that hit the road with the kind of buzz it had. (The only show to surpass the advance hype I can think of was "Hamilton".) It was such a phenomenon that even people who managed to secure tickets and found it offensive didn't demand their money back--they just walked out without a fuss (so refreshing). They knew it was uncool to admit not liking the show. I used to handle the rush line for the "Rentheads" each night. So many of them knew each other and were following the tour; it was like a little party as they waited in line. I had the whole show memorized and I'm surprised at how much is coming back to me even though I can't remember the last time I listened to the soundtrack. It's hard to believe its been over 20 years since then. In that time, treatment for AIDS has made huge strides, and I have friends that were diagnosed at that time who are still alive. Because of the passage of time and all that has occurred, the show has a different feel to me now. Still, it elicits good memories for me Anyway, this reminiscing has nothing to do with this show. I feel bad that a broken ankle derailed the show a bit. And I agree with Angel being the weakest link. I hope Adele Dazeem shows up at the end I'm a west coast viewer, so we're not there yet.

Not that there are people who wouldn’t like it; but that at this point in time they didn’t know enough about it to realize they wouldn’t like it and came anyway.

I've seen Rent four times while touring and enjoyed it more each time I saw it. I used to listen to the CD repeatedly in my car. I found this 'live' televised production good, but not great. It misses something from being live-in-person obviously, but it also just seemed to lack some energy and passion.

Ridiculous to not have some swings for a live performance! What if someone got hit by a car just before the dress rehearsal? Where they just going to cancel the whole thing? Seriously folks, that's what understudies and swings are for. WTH, Fox? This could have been someone's big moment.
There were a few standouts. Vanessa Hudgens was wonderful. The energy in much of the first act was lacking and I am sure that was a dress rehearsal issue. There was a sense of grit that was missing. The set and some of the staging was imaginitive.
It was worth waiting until the end for the original cast! That was amazing! Those voices!!!
I will probably watch it again. It made me miss the Bway show. I took my then 10 year old to see it near the end of the run. It was her choice. I thought she would choose Little Mermaid, but she chose Rent. I worked in HIV research in grad school in the late 80s and volunteered at a testing site. This show always brings me back to people who are gone.. And people who are still here because of the advances we've made!

It brought back such great memories! I saw the OBC back in 1997, not knowing anything going in. A friend had an extra ticket, so I went. I remember looking at my friend after the 1st act with our mouths open. I saw it five more times on Broadway! I fell asleep before the end but can't wait to watch it tonight.
