We were just quoted $6k for 2 years of braces and a retainer afterwards. We do not have orthodontic coverage but do get a 10% discount if we pay it all up front. Ugh.

We paid 6K for DD who had them for 2 years and a retainer after. That was 5 years ago. We didn't have orthodontic coverage either, so we paid $200.00 a month for FOREVER!
I cry a little bit inside each time DD comes home from school (university) and doesn't have her retainer with her.

OOP was almost $10,000. Insurance covered $3000.
Unique case. Surgeries, spacers, expanders, and other tools then braces, now invisalign, and soon grafting.
Has been totally worth it!

Total cost for my first DS was $5500. That’s 18 months of braces -nothing too crazy.
I’m afraid my youngest is going to be significantly more. His teeth are worse.
Luckily we have insurance that covers up to $1500 per kid, so that helped some...

My son had something like a retainer. It was a $1000 after insurance.
My daughter is going to try Invisalign. Her teeth are finally strong enough for braces.

I got braces at age 46. Insurance didn't cover it so I think it was between $5000 -$6000. I had them for three years, plus special retainer 24/7 for one year after that and now I just have to wear my regular retainer at night, which I do...religiously. I forgot my retainer once for a two night weekend trip and I almost couldn't get the dang thing back on afterwards. It's amazing how quickly they want to shift back to their old places.

Such a timely post as I’m sitting in the Orthodontist waiting room while my DS gets his bottom ones on. Total cost 4K, insurance pays 1k so we pay remaining in installments. Includes all care, including retainers if needed, for life. 😀

My DS's first braces (started when he was in 2nd grade) were $4200, his second braces (started when he was in 7th grade) were $5400 and his third braces (started at age 19 and lasted 18 months) were $5500. Then, we had to pay for an implant this past December. All braces were the clear style. All told, we have spent just under $20,000 on his mouth and he is not quite 21 yet!!!

I don't have kids, but I had braces from age 10-15. I will always be able to hear my Mon's voice in my memories: "We could have bought you a small car for what we spent on your mouth."

I don't recall exactly, but both of our girls had 2 phases of braces-- phase one with both palatal and jaw expanders and braces after that, and then the final phase 2. I believe when all was said and done it was about $6-7K per child. Our orthodontic insurance covered $1500 of that. With one of our dd's, my dh had switched jobs so we started over again with dental insurance, so we got another $1500 out of that.
We used flex money to pay for orthodontics both times. That was back in the day when we could set aside the entire amount to pay with flex. It was awesome, but that can't be done now.

First quote was $4000 and insurance paid nothing and they didn’t do payment plans and must pay ALL on the day the braces went on. Top teeth only.
I stalled...
Insurance changed and now pays half but still no payment plan...
I have 3 kids who need braces... I might have to sell something to afford it.

DS (10) is in his first phase of braces, which will be about two years, then retainers for a year or two. Then phase two, another two years, then more retainers.
All totaled, it will be about $13,000 - in today's dollars and today's prices. I'm sure it will end up being more.
Insurance covers a $1500 lifetime max.

DD1 - about $6K total, for the first go round. Insurance covered 2K, and there were two rounds of brackets, one at around all 10-11 and the second at around age 13. No surgery, just crazy crooked teeth. They were beautiful.
Then she face planted at age 18 and smashed out her front two top teeth. So a third round to start college with braces. That was close to $4K, but also involved the emergency dentist, two root canals, and rebuilding her front teeth. After considerable arguing with the insurance companies, dental covered part of the root canals and medical covered part of the rest, since it was an accident.
DD2 was about$3K, insurance covered about$2. Hers was more straightening up the teeth and was less extensive that her sisters.

About $6K each for both of my dd's. $2K is covered by insurance for each kid. I maxed out the flex spending account so I could pay it all upfront and get a small discount.
This includes all treatments, appointments, retainers, etc. It also covers lost or broken invisalign trays, which seems to be a great bonus based on other friends' experiences.

I think mine cost about $4500, with $1500 paid for thru insurance. I had braces when I was in my mid-30s (about 16 years ago, now) for just over 2 years... I got the old-fashioned metal ones, because I was having orthognathic jaw surgery in the middle of the braces journey and I needed the brackets to be as strong as possible to hold up to the wires, etc. I needed before/after the surgery. That cost included a fixed bottom retainer, a regular retainer (which I still wear occasionally, but not often enough) and a bottom biteguard that I wish I could get remade, because it no longer fits properly.
My orthodontist is in the Chicago suburbs; when we were moving to AZ, he told me that he has people who travel in from other parts of the country to see him- if I knew I could get in to see him when we were traveling, I might see if I could figure out how to schedule an appointment with him (if it would still be free, that is).
ETA: my ortho allowed payment plans, thank goodness- I think I finished paying before I got the braces off, so it felt good to go to appointments for "free" lol. (even though I knew I already paid.)

My daughter got hers off a little less than a year ago. It cost $5700. Our dental insurance paid $750 and I flexed out money for it. My orthodontist helped me time it so I could take advantage of flexing out the most possible over the span I was making payments.

My youngest is in braces and her fees were 5250 for top palate expander, braces, retainer.
Insurance paid half and we paid the other half in full with a check because the orthodontist offered a 7% discount for doing that.

My daughter’s braces were $7,000 with nothing covered by insurance. I remember we paid in full up front and got a small discount (5-10% ).

Yes that is what we just paid for our son who finished - 6K. Plus about another 2500 for teeth to be pulled and oral surgery to make sure the teeth underneath grew correctly.

Quoted $5600 for 2 years of braces with a permanent retainer.we had to have 12 retained baby teeth pulled before we could start the process. We pulled the teeth 4 years ago. We are 18 months in to actual brace wearing. We opted to pay up front to receive a discount. My dd has needed 2 additional procedures done by an oral surgeon. She needed to have laser surgery to burn the skin that attaches your upper lip to your gum. The 2nd procedure was actually today, laser surgery to burn thru the gum as one of the adult teeth have not ever come in. The orthodontist will attach a chain to pull in the tooth. We will end up paying more as the missing tooth will take more than the remaining 6 months. They gave me an estimate of an additional $900. The first laser surgery was $650 and today’s precluded was $735. We have military insurance and they cover a flat rate of $2250 for orthodontist.

No insurance, but I did run it through my FSA so it didn't feel so bad - they cut the checks directly to the ortho office. If I recall correctly, phase 1 was $1300 (palate expanders) and phase 2 was around $4k or so. It was a long while ago, so I am not sure.

$5K for DD1 and $7K for DD2 who was a more complicated case with an Herbst (jaw) appliance. Our insurance covered $2K for each kid.

A little over $5K for the youngest. Our insurance paid a pretty big chunk of it, then we paid the remainder in a lump sum and got a discount for doing so. I'd have to look everything up to be sure.
My oldest was less because he only had them for 6 months.
My middle child changed Orthodontist and insurance in the middle. I have no idea how much his cost.
I would do it all again if I had too. My kid's teeth were so messed up. It's a huge esteem issue.

My son is in braces & it is $6,000. We do use our flex spending to assist.
My daughter had braces twice before high school & it was $4,000 each time.

DD is in month 22 of 24 for braces. Cost was $6000. Insurance paid $1500.
She had 2 surgeries while in braces; a surgical extraction of a baby tooth, and a frenectomy where they released the tension between the front 2 teeth. Both surgeries were additional charges.
Expensive, but will be worth it when it's finally over.

Our 16yo twins are in braces now. $5000ea and ins is paying 1/2. Plus they gave us a discount of our portion for doing both at the same time. They have been in them for almost a year and we’re hoping to be done soon - may be closer to 18 months.
