I certainly hope your point is to illustrate how systemic racism has prevented access to birth control and sexual health education for black women. I can't imagine why else you would post this other than because you're racist. If you REALLY want to lower abortion rates, provide access to free birth control and programs to educate people on how to use it and protect themselves. Banning abortions is not going to stop people from having abortions. Truth. All of that... Correct!

Black abortion rates"In New York City, thousands more black babies are aborted than born alive each year, and the abortion rate among black mothers is more than three times higher than it is for white mothers. According to a city Health Department report released in May, between 2012 and 2016 black mothers terminated 136,426 pregnancies and gave birth to 118,127 babies. By contrast, births far surpassed abortions among whites, Asians and Hispanics." Interesting that this was just stated almost verbatim at the Whitaker hearing by Rep Lesko (R-AZ)!

And seriously, the women who have late term abortions for birth control are the minority. Yep. I actually looked it up because I got baited into an abortion argument on Facebook less than 1.3% of all abortions are performed after the 21st week, it's not like women in their 9th month are lined up around the block looking for an abortion. And it’s not women who suddenly decided they don’t want a baby after all. It is invariably women facing life-threatening circumstances for themselves or their unborn child. It is really the cruelest, most thoughtless argument of all for the “pro-life” right to pull out.

My health and body is a non-issue to you. There are a lot of situations where people intervene to prevent a person from harming themselves or others. If a 19 year old wants to take their life we don't say "their body" let them do with it what they will. Same with any kind of self harm. There are regulations on drugs and alcohol. People will always weigh in on protecting life in the womb. If I was to cause a an accident that results in the harm of an unborn child I can be charged with that. If it's harm then then it is an issue for society that it's also harm if there is an abortion. I say all that to say I never fight the laws that are in place. How can you even regulate a punishment? I personally wouldn't want these women jailed. Many of our laws sadden me but unless there is a law in place forcing me to abort after so many pregnancies then I just pray that women chose not to pay a doctor to take the life of their unborn.
ETA: for most people I have met in my life the decision was not easy. For some it was just birth control. It will never be an unemotional issue. I just can't imagine people think it's a "non issue"

It is disingenuous to compare someone intending to hurt a fetus that isn’t their own, to a woman deciding to make health decisions regarding her own body.

Who causes the harm it all happens to that same preborn baby. Whether it's at the hands of a drunk driver or at the hands of a doctor with a vaccuum.

It’s simply not biologically accurate. You’re trying to use emotional terms to sway the discussion in your direction.

Do you really see this issue as that black and white? Are there no shades of gray for you? There are areas I can understand the decision to abort. I am not that callous. I had a friend abort a trisomy 13 baby chose to terminate and she bought a casket and everything. Has a gravestone. I understand but I admit I don't always get it either. But yes I believe that it's a life that needs protecting the same as a new born out of the womb. No, it’s not either a baby or not. It’s simply not biologically accurate. You’re trying to use emotional terms to sway the discussion in your direction. Without emotions what would we be as human beings?

This is already an issue that is emotionally fraught. Trying to manipulate the conversation by inserting your own emotions into someone else's decision is not productive, IMO. Let's address the reasons why women have abortions. Let's listen to them and consider what we as a society can do to eliminate the reasons. That's how we reduce abortion, not by placing a greater emotional burden on women already struggling with a decision.

You control who can use your organs, when & for how long. Same w/a pregnant woman.

Country Ham, if you don't want to have an abortion because it's a baby, your choice. I'm not in your face telling you to abort your fetus.
If I want an abortion, it's not up to you to say anything, because no part of it is yours. I'm not saying I would have an abortion or not. I'm just saying, mind your own business about my body. It's also not the country's or a church. It's my option!

Meanwhile in my state a bill to ban abortions due to the fetus having down syndrome has been passed. If that's the "only" reason. We have a surplus in our budget and it's all going to be lost to legal bills in order to keep this valid. A freaking Supreme court decision and I know it won't matter. Yes, I realize it's different, BUT Roe v. Wade!
I am the mom of two kids with special needs. As a woman, I find it extremely insulting they are interfering with a highly emotional decision. This is not the 1950's where there's nowhere to turn for information. Rarely ever is it just because of one thing. Most children with special needs have multiple diagnoses.
Where are they when any child is born with special needs? Nowhere. They are patting themselves on the back for looking good. Not expanding Medicaid. Refusing to pass legislation for medical marijuana despite overwhelming support. Making medical marijuana difficult to obtain once a proposition is passed. Not paying special education teachers and regular teachers the salary they deserve. Not putting more money towards waivers (or doing it at an extremely low rate) so people with disabilities can be helped. Not passing progressive health care reform. Not helping parents who are unable to work because of being 24/7 caregivers.
I'm so damn mad at men and some women in power thinking they know best. I'm probably too emotional today because my son was up for close to 24 hours again last night. I'd love those motherf**krs to spend one week with me.

refugeepea... that decision by your state is heartbreaking. How incredibly stressful and demanding of parents. I can’t imagine being faced with a decision like that, but to not have the choice at all is cruel. If the state wants to enforce mandatory births of babies with Down Symdrome, they certainly also need to be providing whatever support those families will certainly need... financial, practical, etc.

I have never once picketed, never once posted a FB meme etc. But this is a discussion forum where folks discuss these topics and it's a place where view points are made. In the environment of discussion board I am just discussing abortion like everyone else on this thread. The only time I ever discuss a hot topic "in real life" is when someone specifically asks my thoughts.

I’m okay with Country Ham having a differing opinion. She’s polite about it and that’s all I care about. I got called a baby killer once on the old board. refugeepea , I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time.

This issue is heated and once again women are taking all of the blame for pregnancy. What about the freakin’ men? The irony is not lost on me that....in all of this, men are not held responsible for their ‘reckless behavior’ in getting someone pregnant AND will be largely more responsible than women in passing and supporting bills to control women’s bodies. This is a blog post that really made me appreciate how men walk away from this issue scott free. Maybe we need to stop looking at women as the sole problem in this equation... www.designmom.com/twitter-thread-abortion/
