In the past week or so, my right big toe has gotten increasingly painful. It's not around the nail, it's sort of at the tip and radiating down along the side. It feels like a bruise, but doesn't look bruised.
I think it has something to do with using my stair-stepper in my sock feet a couple of times, which was dumb, I know. I've cut back on using it (and believe me, I wasn't setting any records on it, but is a new exercise method for me) but the toe hurts all the time. I think it's a little bit swollen. Would ice be the appropriate next step? I'd like to do what I can at home before I have to go to a doctor.

Ice off and on and elevate. It will probably heal itself in a few days. Advil if you feel it will help numb some of the pain.

IDid you stub it on a step maybe? If you did the stair exercising machine in sock fever feet is there a way to stub it?

Do you think it could be a bone spur? I let mine go for way too long and ended up needing surgery (Twice!) to fix it. I agree with icing it periodically for 15-20 minutes at a time and keeping it elevated as much as possible, and if it still hurts in a couple weeks go in and have it checked out.

I had the most excruciating pain in my right toe (side and close to foot) I swore I broke it.
Xrays showed arthritis and bone spurs. Ice, Aleve 2x a day for at least 3 weeks and Tylenol/Motrin for pain.

It sounds like gout to me. My brother gets that sometimes. There is medicine for that now that helps you to feel better quickly.

Sock pressure can cause your toes to hurt. Trim your nails as short as possible and be sure you have a wee bit of room at the end of you socks to give you toes room to wiggle and there is no pressure on the nails what-so-ever. Hope it gets better fast.

Gout was my first thought, too.

I thought gout too but that tends to be in the joint, not at the tip, and presents with redness and swelling and bad pain.

I looked up the symptoms for gout and it doesn't sound like what I'm experiencing at all.

Ingrown toenail? Mine doesn’t usually present itself as the nail bed. The outer side is tender and the tip of toe on the side is sore. Also it feels pretty hard on the sides when you touch it. I soak mine in Epsom salt and can pull the skin away. Sometimes I use a silver of cotton to tuck under the toe so nail isn’t sitting on skin. The best thing is to go get a pedicure and have them cut it away. Use an experienced facility. I also dab neosporin in it and wrap it with a band aid. I know mine are painful and feel like they are throbbing at times. Usually I notice it occurring with lots of activity. Hope you find relief soon!

I did not have any swelling at my toe nor any redness.
It took an X-ray to show the issue.

Personally I would rub some aspercream or something on it and then either wrap it with gauze or leave it alone, take some aleve and elevate it. When I walk I would keep pressure off it by leaning on my other toes and the back of my heel.
If it is not better in 2 days, today, and tomorrow, I would go to medcare express or call a podiatrist.

My husband was having problems with his and his Mom (retired nurse) thought gout as well, but the doctor diagnosed him with tendinitis and gave him a prescription. Took care of it easy peasy.

I'm wondering if my socks have anything to do with the problem. I wore dress socks and comfy dress boots to church yesterday and to a meeting afterwards--zero pain. I came home and changed my clothes and put on the white Hanes sport socks I always wear, and instant pain! It's like they're mashing my toe from the tip in. I took them off right away...my toe ached the rest of the evening, but less than previously. I iced and elevated it in the evening.
Today I've been wearing dress socks and my sneakers, done some time on my stair stepper and gone grocery shopping, and it's a little tender at worst. So I'm still trying to figure it out. It does feel like there's been an improvement. Thanks for asking @elaynef !
