I'm not very tech savvy, especially with social media and messaging apps.
Today I had a weird thing happen on Messenger. I hardly ever use the app, I have 3 friends who communicate with me through it once every other week or so.
Today I had a notification pop up from someone I haven't spoken to in at least a few years. It just had their first name and the message "Hi, hope things are going well".
I dismissed it because I was in the middle of something, and frankly didn't want to talk to them. I don't hang around that group of people any longer, too much drama. I don't have them friended on Facebook but don't have them blocked either. Just people I don't want anything to do with anymore.
Anyway, I went back and opened messenger to look at the message a couple of hours later and it's nowhere to be found.
Why? Because I dismissed the notification? Maybe since I didn't respond they deleted it?
I'm more confused than anything. I have no idea how the app works.

More than likely your friend had a spoof profile made of theirs (and the spoof stole the same picture) and then messaged you (in order to later ask for money I'm sure). Maybe Facebook figured it out and just completely deleted the account entirely?

I don't know. I'm not worried about it, just confused. I'm not friends with them on Facebook and it was an out of the blue message. More than likely your friend had a spoof profile made of theirs (and the spoof stole the same picture) and then messaged you (in order to later ask for money I'm sure). Maybe Facebook figured it out and just completely deleted the account entirely?

Its because someone you aren't friends with messaged you and you didn't accept the message. If you log in to FB o a computer and look under your messages you should be able to see it. You won't be able to see it on a phone.

Yes, got the same message from a friend who was hacked. Didn't reply just dismissed the message as it didn't sound like her.

More than likely your friend had a spoof profile made of theirs (and the spoof stole the same picture) and then messaged you (in order to later ask for money I'm sure). My thoughts as well. I had a similar experience - someone I used to work with messaged me and I thought it was unusual since I hadn't spoken with him in probably 10 years and he was just like "Hi, saw you on FB and wanted to see how you were doing" - I replied back, with "All going well, how are you?" - we replied back and forth with a few similar nice statements and then he was like "Have you heard about XYZ Moneyscam Thing" (of course that wasn't then name of whatever money scam and then I realized this was NOT the person I knew and was a fake profile account" - I didn't respond and I blocked that person. When you didn't respond, the person that most likely set up the fake profile, figured you knew it was a scam and deleted it OR someone else already reported that person and the fake profile was removed from FB.

People always say they are hacked I always see it more as copying. Your profile picture is always public and many people have their basic info viewable like their friends list. I keep my friend's hidden. Even my friend shouldn't be able to see any of friends including mutual. I did that because I had a nosy nellie question me on why I had so much friends from around the world.

DH had his account spoofed or copied, whatever. The person had copied his entire friends list. When he notified Facebook about it they didn’t do anything. He had to contact all of his friends and tell them, “hey that account with my name and the (___) symbol for the profile pic isn’t me.” So annoying.

I got the same thing thing when two friends had their accounts spoofed. One was my mom, and I reported the fake account and the message disappeared on its own.
