Chickens are not allowed in our neighborhood, per our HOA. Would you anonymously turn them in, or let it be?
I hear it/them every day. They are loud, and it's getting annoying.

Well, in the olden days, you would be able to just go talk to them and let them know it is not allowed and that the noise that you are hearing is disruptive. This would give them the opportunity to rectify the situation like good neighbors. If they didn't at that point, you would turn them in. Nowadays, people are crazy, so if I didn't know them, I would report them to the HOA.

HOA, zoning, whatever is necessary to remedy this. We have zoning restrictions for a reason.

Not feeling talking directly to them, since I don’t know anything about them. People are nuts!

If I hear it then I would report it. If I didn't and would otherwise not know they were there, I probably wouldn't. I do not want to listen to noise that is allowed, much less noise that isn't.

I don't think you can contact people directly anymore. If they don't take care of it then they will assume you are the one to turn them in even if it wasn't you. People get nasty after that and do mean things to get back at others. Before I read it was annoying I was going to say get an egg carton and ask when eggs will be ready lol

Absolutely, without a second thought I would turn them in/complain/file a formal complaint/whatever I needed to do to get rid of them.
My city doesn’t allow chickens, thank god.

Do they have a rooster? Otherwise you really shouldn't be hearing a whole lot.

If it is not allowed, I would tell the HOA. But, it would depend on how noisy they were. Some of the dogs around me bark quite a bit. Chickens might be a nice relief. Lol! My city allows hens but not roosters. I haven’t checked to see what my HOA allows.

I hate to be blunt, but with along with chickens comes, well, chicken shit. And chicken shit stinks. If you're in the country, that's just life. If you pay HOA dues and live in a subdivision, sitting on the back patio and smelling that would not be acceptable. I'd turn them in immediately.

I’d let it be because they’ll get turned in by someone in a matter of time anyways..I just wouldn’t get involved.

I would report it. We live in a neighborhood with smallish yards and I would hate the sound/smell of chickens that close to my home. I'm not opposed to chickens, just not in close living quarters, or where they're not allowed.

How many chickens are we talking about? My old neighbors had two. We shared a back fence. I heard the hens but never smelled anything.
BUT, given that it is against the HOA rules, I would probably turn them in. Give an inch and they take a mile kind of thing. And all bets are off if there is a rooster.

I don't live in an HOA, but if I did, I'd want people to live by the rules. That's why HOAs exist! I think you're fine to report them and I'm sure others have already.
I live in the country and my neighbor has chickens (hens). They can be really loud even though we are separated by a lot of land. It doesn't bother me. My neighbor screeches at her own chickens -- that bothers me. haha!

Well since you have an HOA and the chickens are noisy, I'd do something. Not sure if I would go to the neighbor's first or directly to the HOA. I guess it would depend on if you have a relationship with the neighbors and what it's like.
In our previous house our neighbors got chickens. But we didn't have an HOA, we had a large lot and so did they and the chickens were quite a ways back. I was a little nervous at first but as that neighbor was persnickety and super anal about his yard, we figured he would keep the coop neat and clean and he did. Occasionally he would let the chickens out and they would wander slightly into our yard but not far and not for long so it was never an issue. If it had been we would have reported it to the city. When he first got them they weren't allowed. Then they were but only I think 3-4 and he had more like six.

I would just turn it into the HOA and hopefully they will take care of it.

I would report it. Talking to them is useless, as I am sure they know they are in violation of the HOA rules.

We have two acre zoning around here, and many people own chickens, including our next door neighbor. I believe there are guidelines as to how many you can own based on the size of your lot.
They had a rooster at one point (which they got rid of because he was an asshole), and his crowing was annoying, but otherwise the remaining chickens aren't a nuisance in any way--sounds, odors etc. I actually like them because in the warm months they let them out of their coop and they wander over to my yard and eat ticks and other bugs. I like watching them.

I would turn them in. They moved into a neighborhood with HOA rules so they should follow them.

I would send the board an email about the illegal chickens. I wouldn’t hesitate at all.

Go tell them you’ll trade your silence for eggs . My mom had chickens in our suburban neighborhood when I was growing up. That’s how she kept the neighbors quiet . But really, I would also notify the HOA. Chickens are messy and smelly and only belong on properties zoned for them, with adequate space and shelter.

Even if I wasn’t particularly annoyed or inconvenienced by the chickens, I think I would turn them in. Allowing them to disregard the rules one time could set a precedent and before you know it rules of every kind are being broken. What’s the point of even having rules if no one pays them any heed?

Chickens stink never mind the noise. I would complain in a heartbeat. I have have kept chickens for years. They only smell if you don't clean them out regularly. I would report anyone who wasn't giving their chickens adequate care. They are a lot less noisy than barking dogs, screaming children and lawn mowers.

They'd have to pay me in eggs to keep me silent. But no roosters.
They know they're not allowed, no one living in an HOA would assume chickens are OK without checking first.
I'd rather have chickens than barking dogs, to be honest.

My next door neighbours have chickens. I hardly ever hear them. And they don't smell either (the coop is 15 feet from our joint fence).
But if you have an HOA that prohibits it, then I'd call them.

I don't disagree, however, I was just curious if they got roosters. Hens really aren't terribly loud.

If they keep the coop clean, you should not smell them. And they are only noisy when they wake up, lay an egg and when they are ready for bed. They just make busybody noise.
They are the best alarm system. They will tell you if something / someone is in their yard and they can’t be bribed. Our turkey sounds the alarm the minute someone comes in our driveway. She is worth her worth in gold ever since she scared off the seven day adventists!
I would rather have a clucking chicken next door than a f’ing barking dog.
