Never owned a dog that didn't eat the food in 30 seconds. Having some kibble out won't stink up your wardrobe. Well her dog, that I am talking about in this thread, clearly isn’t like that because there is a whole bowl of food open in the closet and the dog is not interested in it. Okay, her wardrobe stinks. Good thing she washes it all in a week.

She’d have to replace her clothes more often I would think. I follow her on social media. She buys quite a few things from old navy which to me aren’t that great quality. Plus black clothes fade.
I like clothes and I like to shop for them so my closet looks nothing like that.

I enjoyed watching the video - I like to see people's wardrobes. I need (want) more way more color and more variety, but I'm glad she has a system that works for her. I love their bedroom.
I thought it was interesting that she said, twice, that their dog lives in the closet. I'm assuming that she means that the closet is where the dog chooses to hang out most of time. She did say he likes to stay out of the way. I think I would have chosen my words a little more carefully.

That closet had me hyperventilating. I pack more than that for a long weekend trip! All that black is depressing, I need color and variety and lots of it.

I wonder about her kids...how do you only do laundry once a week when you have kids? Or did she mean that she just does her and her hubby's laundry once a week?

I had a wardrobe very similar to that - just 4 slacks for work and about 8 tops (mixed short- and 3/4-sleeved) with 3 sweater/jackets to pop over the short-sleeved tops in winter. Oh and a pair of comfy pants for non-work. I do laundry once a week, too. The big difference between her and me is that I ALSO had about three whole wardrobes' worth of clothes that I couldn't wear because they were to big or too small. So, despite the simplicity of my day-to-day wardrobe, my drawers were jammed full of clothes. ETA Just T, I do my and DH's laundry once a week. DH does the kids' clothes. I don't know how often (not my bailiwick)!

I only watched a couple minutes. An almost all black wardrobe is so boring that I just have no interest. That isn't to say, you can't make black interesting but you have to have more textures, patterns, styles and some color even if it is more neutrals. I would think that her tops for example would wear out after just a few months if she is wearing them that often. She must wear each one at least once a week, perhaps more than that. If I were to have that small a wardrobe, I would feel like there was always something that would have to be replaced. I'd feel pressure to find the perfect shirt, the most comfortable/versatile pair of pants when shopping. There's no room for error.

I watch stuff like this and find myself vacillating between “Yes. This is what I should do” and “What a freaking weirdo...” in a matter of minutes.
It’s fascinating, in a sense, but I like having more options than that.

She lives in Virginia, so not super super cold and not super super hot either. Unless they moved and I didn’t notice. I used to follow their blog regularly but don’t anymore.
She doesn’t work a normal job — and hasn’t for years, so she doesn’t need work clothes.
I’m somewhat surprised that she doesn’t have more grungy home improvement project clothes, but eh.

While I do have a bit more than she has, I don't have much clothing compared to the average person. I only have 2 pair of shorts (and live in Texas) and 1 pair of jeans. I don't garden so no need for "messy clothes". I will wear jeans 3-4 times before washing typically. Nicer pants I have one pair each of black, navy, gray and 1 tweedy pair. I have more tops than anything and lots of color/prints. Many years ago I adopted the "fewer clothes but better quality" method for my wardrobe and it works for me. Shoes were always my weakness, but I've scaled way back on those and probably only have about 20-25 pairs now, excluding boots. What had me laughing was her "giant fabric collection". I hate to tell her but she is a rank amateur! When she has a room full then we can talk! I was thinking the same thing about her fabric. i had more than that before I was out of high school! I guess it’s a relative thing.

I don't have much more clothing than she does and it is mostly black. To each her own. Our house is small so we can only have so much.

It works for her and that's ok. My wardrobe is small, but not that small. I like having a small selection and find ways to mix and match to make it go a long way.
I'm just perplexed by how little laundry she does! I do way more than three loads a week and we don't have kids.

I have more workout clothes than she does, but about the same amount of other stuff. Definitely a DIY set of clothes like her DH. After moving a ridiculous amount of clothes a few times, I did a major purge and kept the 20% of clothes I wear 80% of the time. There are a few items that I also hung onto for formal or dressy events. I don't wear black on top, so mostly shades of white and aqua these days. I do buy a few things seasonally, but really don't enjoy clothes shopping the way some friends do. There is plenty of color in my wardrobe with scarves and jewelry. I do laundry once a week and, if they have their clothes sorted into the right baskets before I get started, will do my kids clothes. Four loads is the usual weekly number here, although when it is cold and more hoodies end up in the wash, there is often a fifth load.

I think she must do a LOT of laundry... either that, or she never sweats or gets dirty. I have way too many clothes because I have clothes that don't currently fit me, but man- I like some color and pattern variety! I could NOT wear all one color like that. Especially not black! the AZ climate for one reason, and the dog hair would be awful, for another reason!

She obviously has found her sweet spot with clothes. She talked about it at length on one of their podcasts that I can't seem to put my hands on. Here is the blog post where she addressed all the people asking how she lives with so few things. www.younghouselove.com/minimal-closet-wardrobe/Although I couldn't go as minimal as her, I kind of have a uniform as well. That being said, I still manage to have WAY too many clothes. I don't even know how it happens as I am constantly going through my closet and purging AND I hate shopping for clothes. But twice a year I go in my closet and marvel how packed it is and start purging.

I have about the same amount as her. The amount that I do have that is a bit moere is either seasonal overflow (sundresses I only wear for two months!) or clothes that don't fit but I am hoping they will. Those fit in a small Tupperware container. I wear black most of the time too, like her. I think that plays a role in functioning minimally. My uniform is pretty much the same. Pants, tank or shell and cardigan for work. Dress usually outside of work. Pretty much black. Occasional pop of navy

Eh, that little bowl of dry dog food isn’t going to make anything smell. Wet food, possibly, that stinks way more. Honestly I would be more sensitive to strong smelling soaps, detergents, or fabric softener smells than I would be by the smell of a little bowl of dog food.
And LOL, she would positively start to hyperventilate in my closet which is a falling down hot mess of about 200 t-shirts, a dozen zip front hoodies, at least a dozen pairs of jeans and a whole shelf full of sweats. Plus all the crap on hangers that I almost never wear.

Just for dog scootering I need warm shirts, hat, gloves, flannel lined pants, not flannel lined pants (depends on how cold it is) and rain pants. If we go out two days in a row then I need two different pants and shirts. Dog shows are 2-5 days and I need 2-3 dresses, plus flat shoes to run in. Then of course you also want your normal clothes because who wants to do everything in their show clothes Then I need work clothes, gym clothes, casual weekend clothes, etc!

Laundry once a week? Does that include towels and that kind of stuff? I wonder if that is just her and her husbands actual clothes.

I have slightly less clothes than she does, but we wash a load of clothing every day here. (family of 7) If we switched to weekly laundry, I would have to buy about 50% more clothing. I usually wear jeans twice, but when the baby was spitting up more I would have to change clothes at random times.
Admittedly, I have a "mom wardrobe" that is pretty simple - mostly jeans and knit tops. I only like certain styles of shirts for nursing and I'm not at my goal weight, so it doesn't make sense to invest in a bunch of clothing right now.

I can't imagine owning so few articles of clothing. And only black shirts? Nope. LOL I am trying to pare down my clothing, but that is too pared down. I like color and variety. I think it may depend on where you live, too. I can't imagine going through the winter in the midwest with only one sweater. A jean jacket over a tank top would not cut it here. I live in sweaters and scarves.
I am kind of jealous of people who CAN have so little clothing though. Less laundry and more closet space would be real nice. Only one sweater...that is amazing to me. I love my sweater cardigans and cannot imagine not having them.

It’s not for me, but it’s awesome. I could definitely pare down my wardrobe using some layering pieces.

I only do laundry once a week and I have a son. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ETA: When DS is in sports seasons, his uniforms get washed after each game, so that's more than once a week. Beyond that, once a week works for us.
