My son had his tonsils removed several years ago, but now has symptoms of strep (sore throat, feverish, generally feeling sick, stomach ache). Normally I would take him in to check for strep with those symptoms (as opposed to a sore throat with cold symptoms, where I would wait and see). But I don’t know how likely it is strep if he has had his tonsils out?

He can still get strep without having tonsils.

I actually just talked to my daughter's doctor about this on Friday. You can have strep even if you have had your tonsils removed.
Hope he feels better soon.

I had my tonsils out when I was 5 and I still get strep at least once a year. I would have him checked just to make sure.

I don’t think tonsil removal and strep are related. I had strep ten times over the years without tonsils. Teaching school exposed me to strep real often. One time, ten teachers had it all at once.

Yes, you can still get strep. Had mine out at age 22, got strep starting a few years later up until mid 30's. Haven't had strep in 6 or 7 years (knocking on wood).
I had several tests and then was on antibiotics for 3 months.

I had my tonsils removed as a kid. As a teacher, I got strep the first years of teaching like clockwork. The z-pack got rid of the pain within one dose.

Ugh. I’ll take him to get checked.
He had strep 8 times in one season and then twice in the next fall before getting them removed. I don’t think he has had it since. But he is one that seems susceptible to bacteria in any way (skin, etc).

I had strep years after I had my tonsils removed. I would take him for a test. I remember that I was so sick. I was 18 and I had to be helped to walk in to the doctor's office, my dad was practically carrying me.

That's a wives tale. I think the probability of getting strep is less without the tonsils. Has there been strep around the school? My kids never got sore throats when they had step. They had high fevers. body aches, stomach aches, and sometimes hives

They had high fevers. body aches, stomach aches, and sometimes hives I definitely think having his tonsils out has helped, but I suppose it’s not impossible that he could have it. If it was just a sore throat I wouldn’t be as concerned, but the fever, chills, stomach ache, etc leads me more In that direction. He had a basketball tournament this weekend and now a few kids on his team are sick (they also play together during the school week). But he seems to have different symptoms than the others.

That year there was a lot of strep going around but he had a lot of problems with it. My other kids had it a few times but not as much as him. Since then, I think the only person in the house to get strep was youngest ds. He had it once last year.

Likely. My oldest got strep so often, had tonsils removed and still got it, though a bit less often.

I had mine out when I was 15. I got strep once when I was pg with my dd and my ds was 2 (he had it too). Then I had it about 5 years ago. So it is possible. Prior to having them out, I kept it. So 2x in say 20 something years, not bad.
