I believe that all leaders genuinely care about people - except one ! Could you imagine the Cheezie going to an Iftar party (breaking the fast during Any fast or Ramadan)?

This reminds me of Bush going to a mosque without his shoes after 9/11. I never liked him but that image of him going into the mosque with just his socks on is etched in my mind. I might not have liked him but I had respect for him

She has stated that the NZ government will pay for the funerals of the victims.
And that gun laws WILL change.

Yes, all her cabinet has agreed to it and all it needs to do is to now be passed by parliament, purely formality as virtually everyone is in agreement so there won't be any opposition to it. Not difficult to do really when all the politicians feel they need to protect the people that voted them into office and it's for the good of the country to safeguard their citizens.

It says something about NZ's community spirit and support when they pull together. Here's one Haka among several groups have done. Haka for victims

Hallelujah for them!~ According to the news report I just watched, there is. It'd be interesting if the NZ peas would fill us all in on this a bit, I'd be really interested.

I was listening to NPR this afternoon and they were talking to a gun salesman from NZ, people were calling looking for AR-15’s and high capacity clips before the new laws take effect, he pulled them from the shelves and is refusing to sell them.

as my husband said.. new zealanders expect their govt to look out for them.. here in us, the govt looks out for the rich.. or those who pay for it. in nz, you can't sue someone over liability.. like you fall on their property. healthcare is free.. so the govt will take care of you. .. fewer rails and barriers...too

I've been very impressed with Ms Ardern whenever I've seen her interviewed - but that's relatively easy when everything is going smoothly.
Now she's had a real crisis to deal with, I'm even more impressed at how calmly and thoughtfully she has responded and also how decisively she has acted. She hasn't needed to resort to scaremongering, but came up with a plan (well I assume the majority of her parliament was also involved, but she's led them) and a timeframe to implement it in a calm and rational manner.
I agree that she's a very impressive leader.

kiwikate , anniefb , kiwifarmer - I wonder if you can tell us about gun lobbyists in NZ? I'm interested to know if there will be much opposition to these gun law changes.

gar there are pro-gun groups in NZ such as the Council of Licensed Firearms Owners. They have certainly lobbied against legislative changes in the past but do not seem as visible as say the NRA. However I’m sure there are pro-gun users who will oppose any tightening of legislation and banning of certain types of guns. Equally there is also a general feeling - at least among the people I know - that things need to be tightened up and certain types of weapons completely banned as they are, for example, in Australia plus a requirement for registration of guns. The sad truth is that the police have no idea how many legal firearms there actually are in the country because the guns themselves don’t have to be registered.

Thanks for sharing those videos casii and wellway. The haka is such a powerful tribute. I really know nothing of Prime Minister Jacinda Ahern or her politics, but without a doubt she has let the whole world know she is a strong and compassionate leader.

Apparently the police have had 37 guns handed in since the shooting, people, like this farmer don't want to keep them. Hart said that while the gun was useful for some tasks, it was “actually too dangerous to have around as a weapon”.
“For me, it became that trade-off: is my convenience worth the risk to other people’s lives by having these guns in the country? I pretty quickly realised there was no comparison. We’ll cope without semi-automatic weapons, we won’t cope without the people who were taken from us from these events. I recognise one person handing in a gun to the police is not going to change the world, but it’s a start, the country is now one gun safer than it was before,” he said.LINK

My husband is very impressed with her. He just got back from Christchurch. His company is located there, so he spends a lot of time in New Zealand (and his hotel is just 4 blocks from the mosque).

Prime Minister Ardern made a speech at a high school today LINKThat's how the leaders of countries should be talking to people, especially the younger generation.

Breaking news this afternoon is the announcement about gun control reforms. Military style semi-automatics and assault rifles are to be banned. Parts used to convert these guns into MSSAs are also being banned, along with all high-capacity magazines. The government intends to develop a buy-back scheme similar to that used in Australia. Legislation will be introduced in early April and the government intends to progress and pass it under urgency - hopefully by 11 April. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12214763
