Just plain creepy!! The FLDS woman and little girl in the mirror added a nice touch. The Hobert in the kitchen is for some really serious mixing.

What is the weird stairway to nowhere? Or is the shelter? If you look carefully at the bottom right, it appears to lead to a hallway on the right. You can see a little flooring toward the right. didnt see that. It is still creepy.

Does anyone know that area? I wondered if it's not a common thing in that neighborhood. You can see the house behind it in one of the photos and it looks overly large so I kind of assumed it might have been built for a plural family as well.

I was wondering about the appearance of two kitchens too. That is very common in Utah. They can be anywhere from a kitchenette to full blown everything. I know the older homes that have them, were built to do canning in the summer before air conditioning was a thing. There's one in my 70's childhood home. A stove, fridge, freezer, and an old Hoosier cabinet. My husband has rich relatives and their basement kitchens are much nicer than my only one. His uncle sold his home to a Utah Jazz player. The basement kitchen was next to the workout room, full sized basketball court, and theater room.
My current house in Utah has 2 kitchens - one on the main level and one in the basement. It's pretty common here for people to have mother-in-law apartments or suites in their houses, especially in bigger homes. The couple who built my house set it up so they could live on the main level and rent out the basement as a separate apartment (a lot of young newlyweds here rent basement apartments as they tend to be cheaper per square foot to rent than apartments.) They had their house paid off in less than 10 years because of the extra income. My DD and her DH lived in our basement for a year while they were building their house, so it's come in handy for us, but for the most part we don't use the basement kitchen. We're building a new house and while it won't have a full kitchen in the basement, we are plumbing it for one just in case we have one of our parents come live with us some day.

Cedar City is home to Southern Utah University and is a relatively large town for the area. There are a lot of polygamists in southern Utah but they tend to live further south, near St. George. I'd be surprised if it was a polygamist neighborhood. I've never really heard of such a thing, outside of almost whole towns being polygamist (like Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona.)
People in Utah tend to have big families and thus big houses are pretty common. My 4200 s.f. 6 bedroom, 4 bath house is not large compared to a lot of Utah homes. DH and I are empty-nesters now and we're downsizing with our new house, but not as small as I'd like. To have a decent chance of resale in case we want to sell we figured we needed a minimum of 4 bedrooms and 2 baths and we're building 5 bedrooms, 3 baths.

Rhondito I think that’s a reflection into the bedroom scrappingranny I also saw a box on the shelf in the garage that looks like a bread proofer. But no photo of Jeffs. From what I’ve read and seen on tv about the FLDS, they eat a lot of inexpensive carby foods like bread, casseroles, etc. One of the bedrooms has a huge bathroom with double sinks and room for a large tub or shower. I guess we found the favorite wife. My heart hurts for all those kids. Judging by the clothes there’s some boys. I hope the parents aren’t insane enough to abandon them like some of the boys in Jeff’s desert kingdom were. I do think that the women in the photo and keeping the photos up is code that the landlord won’t narc to CPS.

I lived there for a couple of years a long time ago. That was my experience. I'd see them at Walmart occasionally.
Also, I hear you about the size of homes! Mine is 4 bed, 2 bath with some unfinished basement space. It is a definite starter home for Utah. It is CRAZY how much home prices are going up. We wouldn't be able to afford our house in the current market. I know of other families that have done the same thing with their children living in the basement to save up for homes.
From what I’ve read and seen on tv about the FLDS, they eat a lot of inexpensive carby foods like bread, casseroles, etc In the last few years, Warren Jeffs has came out with a strict way they are supposed to eat. I can't remember everything, but I know it was no more sugar. I saw it on a Netflix show.

Another revelation from prison. Husbands and wives are no longer allowed to have sex. If a woman wants a child there are 15 men that are approved for breeding.
Probably less of a chance of having the competition kicked out when there's less younger people. The are often referred to as The Lost Boys.

What upsets me the most is that not only are they inbreeding, they’re purposely breeding more victims/broodmares. I guess if no boys marry in, this God forsaken perverse group will die out. They absolutely know that most people would call CPS if they knew what was happening. Of course it’s hubris to be this open about the residence. I can only pray that the knowledge is used to rescue the kids in that situation.

Do you have to have ugly plastic orange chairs though around your kitchen table? There seems to be another one in one of the bathrooms too. Cardboard box nightstands? I can't say much about the boxes.... When I moved I did not bring my old sofa. I did bring the cushions though. We had an inspection coming so............. Put a grey sheet over 4 larger boxes (20" square) and put the cushions on them. See I have a sofa!! Passed inspection too!

I was questioning them from a staging pictures with an aim to sell perspective. I’m just not sure having them in pics is helping sell the house. 😅 Although it is true there is so much ick factor with other pictured things, it might not be a big factor at all.

That is creepy AF. That isn't a Mormon or LDS hairstyle. That is an FLDS hairstyle. (Fundamental LDS) LDS church does NOT claim these people and doesn't want to be associated with them. I'm most definitely not Mormon but just want to make sure y'all know that neither are these people. They may be perfectly nice people, other than that pesky business of forcing young girls into marriages and worshiping a dude convicted on a couple counts of child sexual assault. I can't help but think the photos of "the prophet" and photobombing woman and child were intentional to market to other FLDS people and make not FLDS people skeeved out. (totally worked for me!) ETA: And agent needs to fix the dang crooked first photo. My OCD went bonkers at that.

I was in essence hiding the boxes.. Just haven't decided on a sofa yet.

I didn't know landlords could/ did do this. I don't think it is necessarily a bad idea, just not one I am familiar with.

I was wondering about the appearance of two kitchens too. If it is a large family, I understand the need for two fridges. The rooms with chairs all around makes me think this is a homeschooling quiverfull-type Mormon family. It looks like a drab house but the little odd details leave me feeling icky. They’re FLDS.

I don't think it is necessarily a bad idea, just not one I am familiar with. NJ has a Truth in Renting Act, which lays out the regulations that landlords must follow. I have no problem with the inspections, but they always seem to be at a very inconvenient time. They inspect for basic cleanliness, lights working, smoke alarm works, toilet flushes, clutter and/or any kind of pest problem. They are random with notice.

Founder Joseph Smith wouldn’t even recognize the mainstream Mormon church as it is today (though I’m sure he’d appreciate their investment portfolio and real estate holdings). The FLDS would be more of Joseph Smith’s kind of people (and Brigham Young, and John Taylor, etc.), and taking girls as young as 14 as brides was something he did as well. Interesting house. My polygamous neighbors growing up in northern Utah were more the “Big Love” type.
