Several weeks ago, there was a thread here debating the pros and cons of going to Morocco. I wanted to share some photos from our recent 9-night trip. We flew into Marrakech and spent the night at a riad, a former palace that has been restored and is now a guest house. The ornate tile work in these old buildings is exquisite. The riads are located in the medina, the old part of the city, full of alley ways too narrow for cars to access. Shopping in the medina is a delight. I wanted to bring everything home with me. We went for henna. Leaving town, we drove over the Atlas mountains, which are still snow-capped in March. We stopped for a night in Ait Ben Haddou. This old fortress is featured in tons of movies and shows - Game of Thrones, Jewel of the Nile, Lawrence of Arabia, etc. Anytime a feature includes scenery supposedly shot in Egypt, it's usually filmed in Morocco. We had to cross the river on these stepping stones to access the Kasbah, and a mule carried our luggage across for us. It does not have electricity and was lit with hundreds of candles. The scenery for much of the drive was akin to the US southwest - lots of gorgeous red rock country. If you look closely you can see DH and DS climbing a via ferrata route on the wall - they are close to the top here. DD chickened out, so I stayed with her and played photographer. Continuing on, our road trip took us to the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi. It is amazing how they just abruptly start, rising up from the black hamada landscape. We spent two nights 'glamping' in the desert. It was unreal. The Berber and Arabian people we met were so friendly and welcoming. We never for a moment felt unsafe. Morocco is a wonderful family friendly travel destination. I would recommend it to anyone.

YES! I spent 2 1/2 weeks there several years ago and it’s one of the few places that I am itching to get back to. So glad you enjoyed your trip

I am sooooooooo glad you had a great time! Love the pics. My close friend runs food tours in Marrakech. How did you find the food?
I live about three and a half hours to the north in Rabat, which is a totally different landscape and vibe. Morocco is so incredibly diverse. I have really enjoyed living here.
Thank you for sharing. The people here really are quite friendly. I think that is why I tend to get defensive because so many people by into the Muslims=terrorists=scary=bad stuff they see in film and “fake news”!

Man, I'm jealous! DH and I have been looking for a trip next year to celebrate our 50th and somewhere in Africa or the mediterranean is at the top of my list. Now to get him on board. He tends to be a tropical islands kind of guy.

WOW! Amazing photos!! That looks like it was a fabulous trip!
We are going to be traveling to Europe next year when dd graduates college. I think we are doing Croatia, Bosnia, possibly some of Italy. I was also looking into Spain and Portugal. I wasn't that impressed with what I saw in Portugal but I was reading a lot about Morocco as a possibility.
Question---Did you use a tour company or do it all on your own?

Really beautiful shots! I especially liked the shot you took from the back of your camel. Beautiful landscape and glamping in the desert...total bucket list item for me.

The food was ok - we did have some excellent meals but overall the food was not the highlight of the trip. We had tajine for almost every lunch and dinner and it got a bit repetitive! (For those who don’t know - tajines are an assortment of meat/fruit/veg/couscous cooked together in a clay pot.) However, I loved the mint tea that we were served everywhere, and I’ve never had better tasting oranges in my life! We also had to try the camel burger at Clock Cafe, and the snail soup from a vendor at Jemaa el-Fnaa.

We arranged this on our own - planning trip itineraries is a big hobby of ours and we have a fair bit of experience doing it. We did hire a driver for the trip to the desert so we could focus on the scenery.
