Live updates Multiple explosions, as yet unverified as to who is responsible, has taken place at 3 churches and 3 hotels in Sri Lanka. At least 156, according to reports, have been killed and hundreds injured. Thoughts and prayers somehow seems inadequate to all those innocent families that are facing such heartbreak this Easter morning. What is happening to this world we live in and what possible gain do they have in killing so many innocent people? LINK

Aw, this makes me very sad. One of my favourite people is from Sri Lanka, and my heart hurts for these people.

My Sri Lankan neighbor is there now with her DH and two teenage daughters. I just texted her to check that she’s ok. She said they were heading out of Columbo when it happened and it was obviously really scary. They’re in the south now, but one of the hotels near theirs was bombed. They’re trying to make the best of it as they’re not due back to the UK until the 25th.

So sad. For the life of me, I cannot understand why people would ever want to kill or hurt other people—especially in such a gruesome way. And when it’s in the name of God... that’s really disgusting. Nobody’s God wants this...

So sad. Like everyone else here, I can’t imagine what makes someone want to do this. And such a large-scale coordinated attack on those celebrating a holy day. Just sickens me.

Killing people in their places of worship is so vile. My heart aches for those involved.

It's awful, just awful. Sri Lanka has seen enough violence in the past.

Unfortunately the numbers are going up, 207 dead and 450 injured. May the survivors find peace.

So much hate. It's unbelievable to me that there is so much hate. And that men's ways of dealing with problems often seems to involve hurting something.

I am pretty ignorant of world politics and was surprised to read of the Sri Lankan Buddhist mobs and their violence against Muslims. Buddhist mobs?

His programme features a sect of Buddhist who preach that Muslims are mean. He saw videos on laptops being used to spread fake info about Muslims. I won't be surprised if something similar is happening in Sri Lanka. I can highly recommend any of the documentaries and books by Simon Reeve if you want to learn about other countries. This is a write up about his programme www.radiotimes.com/tv-programme/e/gjdd6j/burma-with-simon-reeve--series-1-episode-1/After 60 years of brutal military rule, Burma (or Myanmar) is now a democracy and, while poverty is endemic, life has improved for most. Their greatly admired leader Aung San Suu Kyi is credited with this change but disappointingly she hasn’t condemned the military’s attacks on the country’s Rohingya Muslims. Simon Reeve gives us a glimpse of Burma’s positive side before investigating this inflammatory situation. In the first of two programmes he meets a sect of Buddhist monks who preach that Muslims are “intrinsically mean” and then visits the biggest refugee camp in the world in neighbouring Bangladesh to hear first-hand accounts of ethnic cleansing. With Islamic jihadists now getting involved, it’s extremely serious. SUMMARY Part one of a two-part documentary exploring the country in the aftermath of the recent humanitarian crisis in which thousands of Rohingya Muslims were driven from their homes by the military. Simon visits Burma's Buddhist heartlands, including the ancient capital of Bagan, and meets the city's controversial nationalist monks. While the region affected by the military crackdown is off limits, he is able to visit the world's biggest refugee camp in Bangladesh, and meet people traumatised by the violence.

I’ve asked her to text me everyday if she can until she gets home. Her BIL Julian Emmanual from Surrey was quoted in the article. Her DH has been working in Myanmar for 6 months so they all went back to Sri Lanka for a relaxing family vacation.

So sad and tragic..... I can't believe how many people have been killed. I recently watched a Simon Reeve documentary about Myanmar (Burma). That program looks really interesting, I'll have to find out where I can watch it. Curious as to why they are calling it Burma though..... hasn't it been called Myanmar for about 30 years now?

Both are now acceptable. It was the military government that changed it at the time and a lot of countries don't recognise the use of Myanmar. When Aung San Suu Kyi took office she said foreigners can use both names as there's nothing in their constitution to say otherwise.

Another British lawyer based in Singapore who was there on Easter break has lost his wife and both of his children. They were in one of the hotels having breakfast.

From the little I know the country was called Burma for centuries and then when it gained independence the name was changed to Myanmar. I could be wrong but that is what I think is what happened. Thanks so much for letting us know about Simon Reeve and the documentaries and his books. I'm going to search for where to watch his documentaries too. I remember a movie awhile ago that was made in 1995 with Patricia Arquette in it called "Beyond Rangoon". It was about a woman who ends up in Burma and then can't get out. It was a good movie and opened my eyes to the troubles in this country.

Burma, as it was then gained its independence in 1948. The military changed the name in 1989 when they took over following the uprising.
