For me it is some sort of embellishment. Whether it be ribbon, buttons, brads, charms, flowers, tags - or anything else. I even went through my first LO's to make sure they had an embellishment. If it didn't one something got added. It's now a "rule" for me - LO must have an embellishment.

On every layout:
- Cardstock background, color varies
- Extensive journaling, including the date the story occurred (not the date the page was scrapped) which may be handwritten, typed, stamped, etc.
- Heart shape, using various materials (e.g. patterned paper, punched shape, hand-drawn, sticker, enamel dot, photo)
- Unique shape in themed albums (e.g. Mickey heads in Disney album, airplane in travel album, sports balls in sports album, mascot in school album), in addition to heart shape, using various materials, & may be hidden. Note I'm a simple, clean, neutral, themed-challenged scrapper, so the shape often is the only themed item on the page!

Matted photos are the only thing I can think of. Embellishments lately have been stickers or washi. Layouts have been very simple recently. I do use both card stock and patterned paper each time.
