With the Supreme Court refusing to hear appeals from five states, including Virginia, which wanted the Supreme Court to overturn lower courts' finding their same-sex marriage bans to be unconstitutional, they have cleared the path for same-sex marriages to be legally conducted in those states. In VA, same sex marriages will start being legally conducted at 1 pm! link to Washington Post story

This just may be the "snowball" starting down the hill to give everyone marriage equality.

This just may be the "snowball" starting down the hill to give everyone marriage equality. I hope so Jenny. I wish the SCOTUS had taken that step now, but at least this is not a step backwards as I had feared! I'm a straight mom who loves her dh and straight kids and gay friends and who believes love is love is love when it's between two consenting adults.

It is a happy day here in VA! There have been a number of marriages already performed. They are predicting that by refusing to hear the appeals of these five states - VA, Utah, Oklahoma, Indiana and Wisconsin - that six other states will have their bans overturned too - West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming. @gajenny, I think you are right, this is the snowball that will result in an avalanche.

Well, now it's suddenly going to be 60% of the states that have same-sex marriage, instead of 60% that don't. That's a huge, huge difference. And a lot of them are red states. I think this is the stage where we hit critical mass and that snowball starts a-rollin'.

Just waiting for Florida's case to be heard by the SCOTUS and hoping for the same results.

Good to hear. Slowly but surely, the right thing is happening throughout the US with respect to same sex marriage.
