Hi pea friends,
My family is taking a trip to Seattle and Portland. What are some great unique-to Seattle/Portland places to visit? We've got the Space Needle and Pike Place Market on the list, as well as taking a harbor cruise. We'll also be going to a Mariners game.
I've never been to Portland so I have no idea what is unique to that city.
Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated!
Merilee

How old? What kind of food do you like? Budget? Portland has some amazing restaurants.

Some of my favorites in Portland. . .Powell's Books, International Rose Test Garden, Pittock Mansion. Multnomah Falls is nearby. You can drive the old historic highway and see a bunch of other falls along the way.

My kids and I did the Underground Tour last year and found it fascinating. Most people don’t know that Seattle pretty much burnt to the ground once and then had a whole new city built on top of it .

OOO! Good! We are going to Seattle August 9 -- I was wondering much the same thing -- but add -- Where to stay? Gee Whizzz .... Seattle hotels are EXPENSIVE!!! I saw a Snoqualime tour for the wineries and the falls -- the big tourist spots - Pikes Place (is this other than a public market - a big market for sure?) and the Space Needle. What is the public library like -- majestic??

I saw a Snoqualime tour for the wineries and the falls -- the big tourist spots - Pikes Place (is this other than a public market - a big market for sure?) and the Space Needle. What is the public library like -- majestic?? Seattle hotels are insane, but so is parking if you stay out of the city and drive in. I have family I stay with when I visit, but it might be cheaper to stay near the space needle and monorail into the city. I really don’t know though, but anything to avoid driving in downtown. Pike is pretty amazing, there are a lot of stands up top, but make sure you explore the spaces underneath as well. The top layer gets insanely crowded but it is fun to look. The lower layer is typically much less empty and there are some cool shops down there. Good eating around the market for sure! Get some tiny doughnuts if the line isn’t too long. The public library I think is a monstrosity, I don’t think anyone would use the word majestic. It is all futuristic looking, I hate it. I much prefer the one in Portland which is an actual old building with sweeping staircase and marble floors.

Seattleite chiming in. I also managed a shop in The Market for a long time in the late 70’s and 80’s. For clarity’s sake, please call it by it’s correct name, Pike Place Market, or The Market. Not Pikes. Not Pikes Place. Not Pikes Market. Thanks! Rant over

The whole area of Fremont around the troll is fun and funky too) I live about 1.5 miles away. Check out Cafe Turko if you’re interested in Turkish food (best hummus around, I’ll often get an order to go after my Meal). If you’re in the area on a Sunday there’s the Fremont Sunday Market (a small flea market) as well. If you’re going to be in town over Fathers Day weekend there’s the Fremont Solstice Festival which is wild (google for more info).

Or-e-gone anyone I’ve lived a little more than half my life in Oregon but the rest in the greater Puget Sound area. And most of my family lives up there still. And my husband and his family are from there. But yes, I would like it if people could pronounce my state’s name correctly. It’s not hard lol

The Nordstrom’s makes me INSANE. No. Just Nordstrom. And the Pikes. I was getting twitchy. Lol I will agree Pike Place is commonly heard and acceptable.

Merilee Some great suggestions below but I will add, if you are going to take a harbor cruise you might consider adding in a visit to Tillacum Village on Blake island if you would be interested in having a Native American salmon dinner (I think they offer a lunch option too)along with NA dancing. It isn’t cheap but it is a great experience. If you are a Starbucks lover, I would recommend stopping by the Starbucks Headquarters for coffee and or a meal, also there is a parking lot with free parking so easy to get in and out. Lastly, the Seattle Spheres are awesome and worth an hour or two for a visit. You do have to get tickets online and in advance.

For something a little different, I like Savor Seattle Food tours. Many tours meet at Pike Place.
We also love the Improv show at the Market Theater (also at Pike Place in Post Alley), put on by Unexpected Productions. If you have kids, go to the 7:00 Happy Hour one, it's family friendly.
The best chowder is at Pike Place chowder. It's delicious, you'll love it. Worth waiting in the long line.

Putting in my habitual plug for Archie McPhee -- weirdest stuff ever.
Hotels are expensive -- consider an airbnb and ubering where you want to go.

We kayaked on Lake Union over the 4th of July weekend last year and it was MARVELOUS!! I would highly recommend this. Enjoyed it so much, just beautiful.
Also while at Pike's Place Fish Market, we tipped a worker to toss a fish over our son's head and we were able to snap a photo of this.
And we visited the crazy Gum Wall. Kind of gross but made for a good photo. We uber-ed everywhere. We skipped the Space Needle and Chihuly Gardens just because the crowds were just too much for us. But we walked around outside and take photos. On another trip we hope to tour both. We did go to the Pacific Science Center and enjoyed it as well.

My brother and his kids still live in Newport Oregon. When they decided to move there after many vacations, we would say this all the time just to tease him. lol! Portland is a pain in the rear as far as driving goes. Often times we'd have to fly out of Portland if we couldn't get the smaller flightsin Newport so we'd drive. My mom loved downtown Portland but hated driving there. Pike Place Chowder is one of my favorite places as well. I know how they say it Ohh I so miss it. Have fun it's one of my favorite places between the two states.

There is an awesome playground right by the Space Needle! (Though it does get really hot when it's sunny.) The international fountain there is really cool. Consider bringing swimsuits. My daughter really liked Ye Olde Curiosity Shop.
The Oregon zoo is cool. We need to go back down there because they have African Painted Dogs.

Great thread! We’ll be in the area in June after our Alaskan cruise, visiting family for a few days. Not sure what our plans will be but it will be good to have some ideas of different things to check out. I would personally love going to Archie McPhee but I think my DH would be bored to tears there.
