Dh and I had our Cuba cruise canceled but we're considering keeping our flights and touring around Florida. We have a huge trip to Disney/Universal planned for next year. We want to spend a couple days in the Keys but don't know much about them. Should we stay in Key West or Key Largo or somewhere else. It looks like it's 2 hours from Key Largo to Key West. We aren't drinkers or partiers and like a nice quiet evening to sleep. We will have a car. Any good advice? Thanks!
ETA: Would 2 days be enough?

We did a road trio to Key West a few years ago. Driving through the keys was a bucket list item for me, and I was a little disappointed by the driving part because it’s not particularly scenic from the highway. Also, the drive will take much longer due to traffic, low speed limits, and stoplights.
We really enjoyed Key West—I thought the vibe was a lot like New Orleans. We didn’t spend as much time on the other keys as I had originally planned because one of my kids had an injury that knocked out all water and beach activities, but I remember from my trip research that each Key kind of has its own personality. Key West is more party oriented, Key Largo (I think) for snorkeling and nature, others in between range from laid back fishing villages to upscale resort islands.
Anyway, in your shoes, I would absolutely keep my flight and hang out in the Keys for a bit.

We did a road trip from Miami thru the keys.. we stopped at a huge state park.. I think it was on the Islamorada island... we were walking along the pier and saw some sting rays... we went wading into the water... it was a nice place to visit... we feed the tarpons... I'm not sure what island..
In key west we went to the southern most point... have a pic in front of that marker thing... had some key lime pie.. did a sorta Duvall crawl.. ur supposed to start at 1 bar and have a drink in every single bar all up n down the street... we didnt do all of them...
Saw the people at Mallory Square... they have all sorts or performances in the evening... lots of weirdness...
It was a fun trip!!!

We stayed in Marathon, which is about half way between Key Largo & Key West. We then took short trips to Islamorada & Key West. We went to Theater of the Sea and went shopping & to the marina in Islamorada. In Key West, we went to the southernmost point, Hemingway House and Mallory Square ( a must for sunset!) We also just walked around, look out for the chickens! And, we took a chartered sailboat out to snorkel. While in Marathon, we went to the Turtle Hospital (very interesting!), went bike riding & kayaking. We stayed near Sombrero Beach & went there every day for sunrise and to hang out ( rode our bikes down there). While driving on the Overseas Highway, we stopped at the 7 mile bridge (between Marathon & Key West), got some great photos. There’s a great restaurant near the bridge called Kiki’s Sandbar. We loved it, went there twice. We loved the Keys, one of my favorite vacations.

John Pennekamp state park is on Key Largo and is really cool. The drive from Miami to Key West is lovely. Islamorada is smaller & quieter. You can find quieter areas to hang out in Key West, just stay off Duval Street at night and you’ll be fine. There are some lovely smaller B&Bs. I’ve been a handful of times. There’s plenty of historical sites (Audubon house, Hemingway house, ghost tours, etc.). The small aquarium is TEENY TINY but kinda cute. Avoid the pirate museum; it’s boring and cheesy. My favorite place we stayed was Pier House: www.pierhouse.com/It’s at the tip of the key near Mallory Square (where you can visit the sunset festival and shop for local trinkets). They have their own beach (beaches are not great on Key West, but theirs is nice) and a lovely little pool. I have also stayed at the La Concha (actually on Duval, would not recommend if you want quiet) and Eden House (very nice edenhouse.com/ ) We rented bikes and rode all around the island. Much easier than driving & parking! We used Eaton bikes (https://www.eaton.bike/). They’ll even deliver your bikes to your hotel for free. Get the key lime pie at Blue Heaven. Delicious. We did brunch there. There are many boat tours that you can take. I’ve done snorkel/adventure ones (with snorkeling, banana ride, etc.) and a trip to Dry Tortugas, where there is a Civil War era fort and you can snorkel there as well. Most of these are reasonable and include lunch & drinks (after snorkeling). A&B Lobster House is good.
