I splurged and bought some clothes for me and kids from Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack... the washing directions say cold/hand wash inside out with like colors and lay flat to dry. I've never noticed these type of instructions of washing clothes that I buy from other stores, in particular the drying details. Do you closely adhere to washing recommendations? Any ill effects if not followed? Clothes are made of standard cotton/polyester blend.

I drape them over a chair or lay flat on a towel on the dining room table.

Most of the clothes I buy say to lay flat to dry. It annoys me but I bought a drying rack and I will hang them on that.

Thanks for all of the responses. I assumed most put their clothes in the dryer. Will non-drying in electric/gas dryer cut down on pilling or is that the effect of buying cheap clothes? Are all blends created equal or how clothes are dried? Never thought about this...

I wash all of my clothes (and my kids’ clothes) in cold water, on the gentle cycle, with like colors, and don’t put them in the dryer. To me that’s just how you wash clothes. I don’t have many of the problems other people seem to have. No pilling, no tiny holes, no fading or bleeding, no shrinking, no cracking in screenprints. My clothes, even very cheap things, like $3 tank tops from Walmart, last for years and years. Nothing gets worn out or looks old. And my kids have never worn something out before they outgrew it.

Generally I don’t but in my old house I could have as my dryer had a shelf and it could run with no heat & just circulate air to dry the item.
My drawer at my apartment does not have a shelf. I don’t really miss it as I used it maybe once a year.

Are all blends created equal or how clothes are dried? Never thought about this... Well, listen, I dry everything. Air-dried clothes feel stiff to me, and sometimes they still feel wet no matter how long they've been out of the washer. I suspect that the "lay flat to dry" clothes are ones that are prone to shrinkage or wrinkles or both. Drying clothes for too long can cause cotton fibers to "bloom" which may appear as though you've got white fibers on your dark clothes. That bugs me more than anything, but not enough to hang my clothes to dry.

I don’t dry anything flat because if it says that on the tag 99.9% of the time I won’t even buy it in the first place. I have zero time to screw around with fussy laundering procedures. It’s bad enough that I have to spray stain stuff on a third of DD’s and DH’s clothes. If I can’t just chuck it into the washer and then straight into the dryer it’s not coming home with me.

I’ll put it in the dryer for like 10 minutes, on low heat, then lay it out.

Where do you put your clothes to dry? I have hooks across all the cabinets in the laundry room (which is the whole wall above the washer and dryer). I use those for shorts, pajamas, kids pants. Then down the other wall I have clothes racks where I hang clothes to dry and then I have a 3 mesh shelf rack to lay things flat to dry. I also have a clip hanger like this for underwear/bras/camis: www.amazon.com/Whitmor-Clip-Drip-Hanger-Hanging/dp/B0001E839U/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=laundry+clip+hanger&qid=1562561452&s=gateway&sprefix=laundry+clip+han&sr=8-4My drying shelves are like this: www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Foldable-Drying-Rack-White/dp/B00H7P1GPO/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=folding+mesh+drying+rack&qid=1562561666&s=gateway&sprefix=folding+mesh+drying+&sr=8-4My clothes rack is like this: www.amazon.com/Simple-Houseware-Clothing-Garment-Chrome/dp/B01MSAVQJO/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=clothes+rack+on+wheels&qid=1562561713&s=gateway&sprefix=clothes+rack+&sr=8-3

Are all blends created equal or how clothes are dried? Never thought about this... All blends are NOT created equal. The more polyester the more likely it is to pill. But short fiber cotton can also pill although it is more apt to shrink instead. So you can have two shirts with the same blend but still not get equal results out of them because the type of cotton (fiber lengths from the boll) are different. I am a care label reader. If I have to lay flat to dry it stays in the store. Since you already bought it, if it is something I expect to be worn for more than one season I'd follow the care label. If it is something you don't care if it gets worn for more than one season, I'd toss in the dryer.

I think tumble drying us not a universal thing. Certainly in Europe most people peg their clothes out to dry or use a rack inside. Tumble dryers are seen as expensive to run and while a lot of people own them , they are not used constantly

I drape them over a chair or lay flat on a towel on the dining room table. This is what I do, or I air dry in the garage on a cabinet door knob.

I air dry all of my tops on hangers. My dh put in a rod near the washer that holds them until they’re dry. I do find that my tops don’t pill, shrink or fade drying them this way.

I will put DH & DS clothing through the dryer, and some of mine. I do hang most of my clothing to dry, though. I bought a spring loaded shower rod and will put it up in the shower, then put my clothes on hangers and hang on the rod to dry. In the morning, put the clothes away and the shower rod comes down--very easy and takes virtually no space.

I airdry all of my sweaters on a drying rack. Winter sweaters I will often wash by hand or a couple of them on gentle cycle. My work tops and pants I hang up to dry. Pj, undies, sweats I throw in the dryer.

Omg, I can’t imagine not tumble drying anything. I feel clothes are generally softer out of the dryer. There’s nothing like grabbing a warm towel out of the dryer right before a shower or putting on a soft warm t-shirt freshly dried when you’re chilly.
I do generally air dry most of my tops though that aren’t t-shirts or sweatshirts. I think they last a little longer that way and aren’t as likely to shrink or pill. Pretty much everything else goes in the dryer. Doing laundry is a hassle enough without trying to air dry everything.

Any ill effects if not followed? Clothes are made of standard cotton/polyester blend. If the clothes are truly just cotton/poly and I can handle some shrinkage, I would put them in the dryer on delicate. If I couldn’t wear the item if it shrunk, no dryer. If the material has some amount of rayon/tencel/modal in the blend, I would follow the instructions and lay flat. I learned the hard way that rayon and dryers (and some rayon can’t even be washed, must be dry cleaned) don’t mix.

I don't put ANYTHING in the dryer that says lay flat, hang dry or air dry. Ever. And, I hang dry a lot of things that I think won't hold up well in the dryer (and then sometimes will toss those in for 5 minutes or so). All of my Athleta & Fabletics workout pieces are hang dried, even though they could go in the dryer. All bras are hang dry.
I have a tiny laundry room, so it's a pain in the ass, but I figure it out because otherwise my clothes would be ruined and unwearable.

If it doesn't say "tumble dry" it gets thrown over the laundry room doors to air dry.

I don't have many clothes that can't go in the dryer and I honestly hate the feel of air dried clothes on my skin. The few things I have that bed it just get hung on hangers right out of the washer.

I generally follow the directions on the tag, but somethings have been done wrong because I either missed it or if DH moves my things to the dryer (although he's usually good about asking if anything needs to hang up). I do line dry most of my fleece sweatshirts in the winter to help keep them looking nicer for longer. I either lay things on my ironing board or hang on a cord up on our ceiling in the basement laundry room, drape on the now-empty washer, or on an empty laundry basket.

Do you closely adhere to washing recommendations? Yes - if it says dry flat, then I do not put it in the dryer. Having accidentally shrunk a few items of clothing, I learned my lesson. I pretty much hang all my blouses up to dry and only put towels, undies and pants in the dryer.

I don't think I have one thing that doesn't go in the dryer for at least a few minutes. If I don't want something to shrink I'll put it in the dryer for a few minutes on medium heat then hang it up to dry the rest of the way. I will lay some things flat depending on the fabric and how it's made.
Generally I don't follow what the tag says. I'll look at the fabric blend and make my decision from that. For a cotton poly blend I'd do it as I said above. My DD was amazed when I told her she could put her 100% poly clothes in the dryer and they wouldn't shrink. She said it was life changing - lol!
