I'm a soon-to-be 25 year old teacher in a bit of an "Ack! That sounds old, I should have my act more together appearance-wise!" funk. I don't wear a ton of makeup but do dress age appropriately, straighten/curl my hair most days, etc. I'm wanting to look put together but not caked in makeup - don't have a ton of time in the morning.
I have sensitive skin and have worn Clinique in the past but haven't bought any new makeup in awhile. I can hit a Nordstrom or Macy's and any counter there, or Sephora or Ulta. A friend suggested Bobbi Brown... Any other suggestions/experiences to share?
ETA - can spend around $100.
Thanks!

With $100 at a fancy cosmetics counter you can get an eyeshadow, mascara and powder. LOL I'd do Ulta and try several makers.

I like Bare Minerals. They have a starter kit you can get that has smaller sizes of most everything you need to see if you like it. I like the fact that it's very light, stays on well, and you can get the level of coverage you want.

I took my 13 year old to Ulta for a make-over and he was amazing!!! It was 30$ and he was so fantastic, it was worth every penny. We did spent over $200 on primer, foundation, cover up, and blush and a basic brush set.

Budget has some wiggle room, just thought I'd aim for a ballpark :-)

I'd go to ulta or sephora -- they're easiest to poke around and try all the different brands. Make an appointment for a makeover -- they'll usually comp the makeover if you buy some of the product.
I was in Sephora yesterday, and the sales people were incredibly helpful. I bought a CC cream that I don't like today -- they're so good about returns there. I won't have a problem bringing it back or exchanging it for a different color.

I have been to 4 different Ultas and 2 were completely unhelpful and that's when I was actually looking for help but the girls were gathered around talking or no where to be found. The other 2 ones I went to were helpful. So for me getting assistanted at Ulta is hit and miss. I haven't been into a Sephora store but have always heard if you need help that's the place to go.

Another nice thing about Sephora is that you can get some samples of different foundations, etc. If you're looking for drugstore, the Covergirl 3 in 1 with the turquoise top is great. Revlon Colorstay is longwearing and it comes in a couple of different skin types. Honestly, for blushes, there are some high end I like but the Wet-n-Wild Color icon blushes are awesome. The only drawback is that they only come in 4 colors. Jordana Twist-n-Shine lip pencil stains are really nice too - you can get those at Walgreens. They're especially nice for a teacher since you won't need to touch up color much during the day. My fave drugstore mascara is CoverGirl Clump Crusher - I use the water resistant but you don't have to. At Ulta I like Tarte's Light Camera Lashes and Mally Volumizing Mascara.

Bobbi brown - but then I don't have all the other brands to compare in the UK.

I like Bare Minerals. They have a starter kit and it is very light and won't feel like you are weighed down. I would visit their store if one is in your area or go to Sephora. I have yet to have a bad experience at Sephora.

I go to both Ulta and Sephora. I like Sephora better. I think you'll do better at a place where you can try different brands.

Why don't you try your hand at DIY first? I came across a really great YouTube video for a very natural and easy look and I think she used all NYX products. Let me see if I can find it, and I'll post it here.

I have yet to have a bad experience at Sephora. I second exactly what khalessi said. Also, for eye makeup, the Sephora "house" brand is very good (IMO) and will not break your budget. Fave drugstore mascara is L'oreal Voluminous Carbon Black.

Go to Sephora and then hit YouTube videos. I can give you suggestions of other beauty people on YouTube to watch if you want them. I love Lauren Curtis (the video posted above). She does a lot of pretty, natural looks.

I like Origins products. They tend to be very natural looking and are decently priced as well as being quality products.
Like several others I prefer Sephora over Ulta because I can't ever seem to find help at Ulta. I have always received excellent service at Sephora though Ulta has more affordable options.
A little pet pet peeve of mine...I have yet to see a makeup artist (other than one we like at the origins counter) tell a client they can go without foundation. Some people simply don't need it. If you have good skin and don't want layers of makeup, you honestly CAN skip the foundation. If you want it and feel comfortable, that's great too, but sometimes it isn't necessary.

Definitely Sephora. Tell them exactly your needs and budget and they will probably do a mini makeover. Sooo much fun! They are usually very generous with their samples also.
Jordana Extreme Lash is a great drugstore product. Black tube with purple writing. I have lots of high end mascaras...Dior, YSL, Lancôme, etc.,etc,. Jordana beats them all. Also Cover Girl Clump Crusher in the orange tube. Never clumps and is a great daytime mascara that can be built up. I actually use 1 coat of this with 2 coats of the Jordana on top. Oh, I get the Jordadna at KMart for 2.99. Cover Girl is a little more but not by much...I get it at Walmart.
Happy shopping.
the correct name is Jordana Best Lash Extreme.

Sephora will show you how to do a full face of makeup free with a $50 purchase. Just call and make an appointment. They do my makeup for events 2-3 times a month but I took my mom in over the summer and they were wonderful showing her a simple duplicatable look for everyday and then a few things to kind of 'jazz' it up for special occasions. Ulta has never been worth my time walking in.

For sensitive skin I would go to Estee Lauder. I have very sensitive skin and can't wear anything by Estée Lauder. Horrible red itchy rash! On another note, the first Sephora in Australia is due to open in Sydney in December. I can't wait! My son got me stuff at the one in Times Square and was a bit overwhelmed by choice. He did good though -Naked Palette 3 plus a bunch of samples. They're talking about trying to keep pricing on par with the US stores, plus shipping. I hope they do - makeup is so expensive here comparatively.

Don't overlook online makeup stores. Many have loyalty programs and free shipping, and almost all sell the brand name products at slightly less. They also have good sales from time to time. I use them almost exclusively for items such as eyeshadows, brushes, mascaras etc. For anything that I need to do a color match for (concealers, foundations etc) I try it out in a store first, then check prices online before deciding where to buy it. I know that's a bit cheeky but makeup is way overpriced for what it really is, so I'm going to shop where it makes the most sense.
About the only item I won't buy online (unless from the brand site itself) is perfume, because I'm not 100% convinced it's genuine. There are too many fake perfumes out there.

Another vote for Bare Minerals. My skin is sensitive and this works great. Also, it's so light so you don't feel as though you're wearing makeup. It lasts forever (really it does... it's minerals). And looks so natural on.

My Ulta was very non helpful. Either they are just shelf stockers and cashiers or it was my age and they didn't think I was worth their time. My DD drug me to the Merle Norman shop around the corner from my home and got me 'outfitted' for $100.00 I've gone back to my slothful, no make up ways though.

I had worn Clinque until last Fall, then I decided to make a Bobbi Brown appointment at Nordstrom's.........I love their make-up. I don't have anything to compare it to. So, with that I can tell you BB will blow your budget. Yes, somethings last longer than others, however $100 is maybe a couple of items depending on what you're going to purchase.
