25 years old...LOL..I think the only help for you is MAXX FACTOR with a ton of pancake. I'm kidding. I am very old and in my genre, pancake makeup hid a lot of sins. I remember at 25, I taped my first grey hair to the mirror. Now, I wish it was "only" 1 hair. LOL. ?

With $100 at a fancy cosmetics counter you can get an eyeshadow, mascara and powder. LOL I'd do Ulta and try several makers.
Last time my DD went to a "fancy" counter (I think it was Estee Lauder?) the mascara alone cost $60! I doubt she would have been able to get eyeshadow and powder as well for $100. She was getting her makeup done for a formal occasion and you got it done for "free" if you spent $100 on cosmetics. For her $100 she got the mascara and a lip gloss.
Stupid crazy prices here for make up.

I have been to 4 different Ultas and 2 were completely unhelpful and that's when I was actually looking for help but the girls were gathered around talking or no where to be found. The other 2 ones I went to were helpful. So for me getting assistanted at Ulta is hit and miss. I haven't been into a Sephora store but have always heard if you need help that's the place to go. Do we go to the same Ulta? I swear I am invisible in that store, as I have never, not even once, been asked if I need help. I can hear them chit-chatting several aisles away and I guess I could go ask for help if I needed it, but I think it is terrible customer service to not even acknowledge that a customer is in the store. I can usually find what I want, and I don't want to be followed around like I might be a shoplifter, but dang! There has to be a happy medium. Rant over. I have learned that if I want to be helped, I will go to Sephora. They know how to do customer service there. When I decided that my aging skin wasn't looking all that great with Bare Minerals, I went to Sephora and found help to get a CC cream that is working better for me. Something about the way it reflects light.

I agree with smartypants to watch some videos and try some cheaper brands- many of them cater for sensitive skins in my experience. Lisa Eldridge has some great videos and she doesn't just concentrate on the expensive brands either.

I like Clinique and Estée Lauder. And Macy's has a bonus give away with purchase right now!

If you're on a budget Ulta is without a doubt the best place to go.
There is no need to commit yourself to one brand (thereby locking yourself into one price point).
If you buy something and it ends up not working for you you can return it and try something else until you find products you truly love.
I will no longer buy pricey cosmetics without the benefit of Ulta's very generous return policy. They also have a nice reward system.

Another vote here for Sephora. It's fabulous that they will take back anything that doesn't work when you get it home. They love to help and advise. In my local store, many of the consultants are young women, who I suspect are also on budgets (assuming since I definitely was at that age). If they know your budget, I suspect they can help you with product recommendations to make the best use of your funds. Also, I find that the higher end make-up tends to last longer - so factor that into your budget as well.
I converted from Ulta to Sephora many years ago. The Ulta reward program is baloney. They constantly lost my points, and points are always blacked out for everything but Ulta brands and drug-store stuff. Ugh! I agree with the PP that the sales people there are always standing around chit-chatting and don't offer to help. Personally, I never get good service in the department store make-up counters, either.

There's no blackouts, you can use your store cash on anything, any brand.

I've been wanting a make over and had one today. I went to the Estée Lauder counter and I spent $599.+ Then went to ulta to buy the necessary makeup brushes/tools. I am very pleased with my look. My only hope is can I duplicate what was done

Are you sure you've tried it since they changed it in 2014?

I seriously despise their bait and switch tactics, and they are no less expensive than Sephora. Glad you like it and I don't care where you shop - my opinion is my own and I wont endorse Ulta.

Ha! Don't ever pay for mascara. Given how often they include mascara in those "bonus w/ purchase" gifts, nobody should ever have to pay out of pocket for mascara again.

It sounds like you are trying to use the coupons, not the rewards. Those still don't work on the prestige brands (except for the quarterly 20% off your entire purchase coupon, that will work in prestige brands). That's different than the rewards program though. The rewards program is earning store credit back for every dollar you spend. Then it's just like having a gift card to the store.

Don't overlook online makeup stores. Many have loyalty programs and free shipping, and almost all sell the brand name products at slightly less. They also have good sales from time to time. I use them almost exclusively for items such as eyeshadows, brushes, mascaras etc. For anything that I need to do a color match for (concealers, foundations etc) I try it out in a store first, then check prices online before deciding where to buy it. I know that's a bit cheeky but makeup is way overpriced for what it really is, so I'm going to shop where it makes the most sense. About the only item I won't buy online (unless from the brand site itself) is perfume, because I'm not 100% convinced it's genuine. There are too many fake perfumes out there. Which online make up stores do you use?

I use the Ulta brand eye shadow and I love it. Stays on all day with no creasing and I have hot flashes from the hubs of hell! I had good service at Ulta recently. I wanted to try the new Bare Minerals liquid makeup. I really liked it and am going to buy some. I am allergic to the powder Bare Minerals. It makes me itch. It has bismuth in it so I found some online that is bismuth free at Everyday Minerals. They will send you samples to try for the cost of shipping, $4.95, I think. It was plenty to try for a few days before ordering. Cost was very reasonable too.

Feel free to come to Houston anytime and whip those suckers into shape, though. BTW - thanks for helping make the point that they have multiple, intentionally confusing and misleading programs they they never intend to honor.

I had good luck at Sephora. They took a pic of my skin which auto matched me to my perfect shades in like 20 different brands. It was awesome.

I use Bare Escentuals almost exclusively. It's light and I don't feel like I'm wearing make-up. You can get it at Ulta/Sephora or a Bare Escentuals store.
