Is it genetic? Is it preventable?
I am a procrastinator. I’m not proud of it and I do try to fight it but I really just work really well under pressure. For example, ten years ago I stayed up all night to finish our Halloween costume before we left for Disney in the morning. Right now, it’s 130am and I am finishing favors for my dd’s graduation party tomorrow. Which btw, I still have one more thing to squeeze in in the morning before we begin setting up the hall.
Honestly, I hate that I’m like this. I try to set timelines but the devil in my head says ehhh you’ve got time.

I have read that procrastination may be due to being a perfectionist. You are afraid of not being able to do something perfect, so you keep putting it off.
I don’t consider myself a perfectionist, but I do procrastinate because I think something will be too hard or take too long. I don’t think it is hereditary, just a personality quirk.

Just kidding...couldn’t help myself.
I’m a procrastinator too. I try not to be, but I always end up waiting until the last minute. Things I’ve read over the years link it to depression but I’m not convinced of that. I’ve also read it’s due to liking the drama of possibly not finishing on time.

I'm a huge procrastinator as are both of my kids. DH is somewhat too, but not as bad as the three of us. Maybe it's hereditary, maybe it's learned behavior.

I am/was also for my whole life. I always just figured I was a combination of lazy/disorganized/worked better under pressure and generally just incapable of doing things in a timely manner.
In January of this year my therapist had noticed I was more times then not late for my appointments and she asked me some questions such as was I normally late for events/appointments/work, did I tend to procrastination starting or finishing projects or tasks, did I suffer from disorganization I general. Based on my affirmation of all these things she said I think there's a strong chance you have ADHD would you be willing to do some investigation of it. I did and after testing sure enough I did have ADHD.
For me it was an emotional moment/diagnosis because for yrs and yrs I'd beat myself up for my inability to get stuff done.i remember crying and realizing I wasn't just a unorganized lazy person.
I took a 8 week course on how to manage my ADHD, take medication and therapy and use the skills I've learned to help me.
My psychiatrist told me that there are many adults walking around undiagnosed.
If you have other issues such as impulsivity, inability to focus or concentrate, disorganized or forgetful or emotional difficulties I'd encourage you to talk to your doctor about it.

No,but DD and I are definitely perfectionists. Both the kids are super smart and get fabulous grades, but do it in very different ways. DD will start projects/paper/homework early, but keep working on it until it's perfect and then not turn it in until the very last minute. DS just waits until the last minute and stays up all night finishing.

I am a procrastinator, but I am never late to anything. I always leave things like costumes etc to the last minute. It's not that I work well under pressure, I think it's just that I'm lazy and there's always something I'd prefer to be doing. Hmmmmm, make a costume for a dress up day at school, or watch TV? Pass the remote! Fill in my yearly work review or hang out at 2 Peas? Turn on the internet! (And then 20 minutes before I'm due to meet with my boss I will fill in my KPIs.)

Me? Procrastinate? I'll prove you wrong, just you wait and see. Seriously though, I am a huge procrastinator. I find it worse when I am anxious and overwhelmed. If I'm not, I am slowly getting better. My sister has taught me to think of 'future me' and how happy she'll be if she has no work! Have you seen the ted talk about procrastinating: www.ted.com/talks/tim_urban_inside_the_mind_of_a_master_procrastinator?language=en

I set an alarm to do something or it won’t get done. I need to book travel tomorrow and it’s killing me to do so. It’s just an anxious reaction and I need to not let it control me. It’s what works.

I do the exact same thing (not about setting the alarm) but feeling anxious when I have a task looming over me. I put things off, feel this heavy sense of dread, and still can’t get started on the task until the very last minute. I have been diagnosed with adhd and have taken medication for it through the years. The meds help me stay focused once I have started, but I don’t think they help with the procrastination part.. It it is so frustrating and I wish I could figure out a way to stop doing it

Two reasons: perfectionism is one. By putting it off until the last minute, you are giving yourself permission not to be perfect. You say to yourself, “Hey, that turned out pretty good for only having one hour to get it done”, which leads to reason number two:
Adrenaline. By forcing yourself to work under such pressure, you get a thrill and an opportunity to see just how creative and productive you can be on the fly. Very capable and creative people often use this, ( often subconsciously) to keep things interesting. They may say the whole time that they’ll never put themselves in this position again, and berate themselves for being lazy, disorganized, ect, but then they keep doing it because they are getting something out of it. ADHD people do this, because they need the adrenaline to get moving.
I used to fit both categories, but I’m older, and fight Anxiety Disorder, so now I avoid these situations, as guaranteed to trigger a panic attack. I’m no longer a perfectionist at all, either. I’m thrilled if I get anything at all done, forget it being the greatest example of my abilities. I’ve embraced humility in the recent years, and see the relationship to my former perfectionism and pride.

I am definitely a procrastinator but I think it’s mainly because I don’t like doing something twice or more. For example I leave packing for a holiday till the last minute because then I know I have everything. If I start well in advance, even with check lists, I end up taking things out, checking something is there, maybe re-ironing things and I find I’m doing the job more times than would be necessary.
I like to do something, get it away and then it’s done and dusted. If that makes any sense.

Most view it negatively...but I know that I work better under pressure which I assume is why I tend to leave things to last minute. The mundane everyday things like paying bills I always have done ahead and ready to go. I'm rarely late to anything. Just when you give me a project, I wait til the deadline to get it done.

I laugh when I read people say " I work better under pressure". My niece had me proofreading her grad school application essay and told me that. I read it and texted her back "No, you don't" LOL
I think in a lot of cases, that phrase is a merely a justification. I have yet to meet someone where that phrase is accurate.

I’m better now than I used to be. I know I’m a perfectionist and that’s part of it. I will cop to not starting a big project at all if I know I won’t have adequate time to complete it in a reasonable amount of time, and I never seem to have enough discretionary time (uninterrupted) to be able to work through it completely all at once (even over the course of several consecutive days). I’ve learned that in many cases, a task will take three times longer than I think it should take, and make a mess that’s ten times bigger than it was when I started until I can work through it. I also know I can’t stand living in that kind of bigger chaos for very long.
So a dumpster fire project like organizing my studio/office will get put off indefinitely because the minute I start tearing into the piles, I quickly realize the mess will be ten times bigger, for three times longer and I can’t stand it. At least with the stuff in the messy looking piles I know where specific things are. I’m unable to pick away at a big mess a little at a time and make any progress. Eventually I get to the point where I can’t work on anything, and then I’m forced to take it on and get some stuff straightened out enough to function.
My BFF is also a procrastinator and hers is definitely due to ADD. She will start something (or many things at once) and just lose interest, leaving a trail of chaos in her wake. Her response is simply ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ “Oh well, that’s just how I am and you’ll just have to deal with it.” I can understand why her family gets frustrated with her but since she’s unwilling to deal with the underlying issue there isn’t much that can be done about it other than to just deal with it.

I had to figure out ways to deal with my procrastination issues over the last few years as I completed a graduate degree. The program is self-paced and 100% online, which compounded the problem. I ultimately had to work out many different tricks to force myself to do the work and complete the program at least a little early (I ended up finishing four months early--I will take the win and be satisfied). Some of the tricks I employed were: Setting a timer to do just 15 minutes' worth of studying or paper writing. Once I was in at the 15 minute point, I generally stayed in there at a good productivity level for at least a few hours. I also bought an app called "Freedom" for less than $20 and set it up so that I could not access my usual favorite internet procrastination haunts. There are lots of free apps as well, but Freedom allowed me to customize and automate it in a way that worked for me so I went ahead and paid for it. When your school is internet-based and the internet represents a huge procrastination playground, that is a problem. I also did one of the procrastination guru's 5-4-3-2-1 thing and still do it. That's where you don't give your brain enough time to talk you out of just doing what you are supposed to be doing. In addition to all that, I bought a lot of cool, fabulous planner and paper/pen studying stuff to make it as appealing as possible. I tried to break things up into chunks and I created a reward system for myself. One reward was that I had all of my assignments for papers for my entire graduate degree printed out, hole-punched, and placed into this cute 3-ring binder with colorful dividers. Every time I started a new project (usually a paper), I would take out the corresponding rubric and instructions and put it on my cute clipboard. I would work from that until the paper was done, and then I tossed the papers. It was ENORMOUSLY motivating to watch that dumb little cute notebook go from stuffed full to just nothing but dividers waiting for something new. The notebook is still upstairs in my study/scrap attic, put away on a counter and every time I look at it I think "Thank God THAT is over with." Finally, I watched this video probably a dozen times in the last few years. www.youtube.com/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU&t=2s

i am terrible for it. i used to say i was too busy and tired and i will get to it tomorrow, next weekend, etc. now i am unemployed... and i get *some* stuff done, but there are MANY items on my to-do list that should have been crossed off by now. and i think part of my issue may be ADHD related. my DS has been diagnosed and these things often don't come from no where. as his grade 7 teacher said, "when you plant a potato, you get a potato". off to work with kids to purge old toys and games out of closets and bins under their beds. no seriously.

I’ve come to realize that much of my procrastination stems from a fear of failure. I would never describe myself as a perfectionist, but I’m someone whose first thought is often “Oh man, I’m gonna screw this up...” So I put it off.

I have read that procrastination may be due to being a perfectionist. You are afraid of not being able to do something perfect, so you keep putting it off. This is me. This year I have been working on that and trying to get to the point that "good enough is okay" with many things. I'm also trying to learn to accept compliments (usually on my sewing/quilting) at face value and not point out all the mistakes that I know are in that finished product. Both are hard habits to break.

I'm a perfectionist and often taken too long doing things if I don't procrastinate. It is just my process. Other times I just want to do other things instead of what I should be doing.
I could pull an A on an essay that i started the night or 5 hours before (I figured an academic 5 page paper took me about an hour per page). Often I was printing 3 minutes after I should have left for class.
Other things i do immediately or at least early.
Is it genetic? I don't know but I've probably taught or at least modeled for my boys. (I don't think my parents are procrastinators, but my brother and I are.

Procrastination, that's my middle name! I put most things off that I don't want to do but I am never, ever late on anything. I always meet deadlines. What I have found though, is that some things I put off, I end up not having to do for one reason or another. Procrastination sometimes saves me work.
eta No perfectionism here, just lazy sometimes or I'd rather do something else
