I usually don't call my sister-in-law's husband anything besides his name, or collectively, "my sister-in-law and her family."
But then today, I was talking to my BFF and for some reason said, "My brother-in-law is stopping by later today," and she said "WHAT?‽ Did <my brother> and <his boyfriend> get married??"
So... do you refer to your spouse's sibling's spouse your brother- or sister-in-law?

I refer to my brother's spouse as my sister-in-law. I also refer to my husband's brother's spouse as my sister-in-law. I refer to my soon-to-be ex-brother-in-law by a whole bunch of other names but that's for a different thread!

I refer to my siblings spouses as my brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws.
I refer to my DH's siblings spouses as my brother-in-law's wife.
I do the same with nieces and nephews. My side, they're my nieces and nephews. DH's family I refer to as DH's niece or nephew.
I guess probably for clarification on which side of the family they're from?

Yes I refer to DH's sister's husband as brother in law, same as I do to my sister's DH. DH does the same in reverse.

No we call him Older Brother. Names aren’t used for family really. To his face I would call him Niichan and when I refer to hi I would call him Giri no Oniisan which means older brother by obligation. It’s polite. If the brother were younger I would just call him hey you.

The spouse of my husband's sister (who is my sister-in-law) has no relation to me. He is my sister-in-law's husband, whom I would refer to by his first name. I believe that's how it works for family trees, etc., that I learned way back when along with the once and twice removed cousins.
Our family also uses the phrase, "the Outlaws", when referencing the collective spouse's of us siblings. It's a running joke that all of the in-laws are considered out-laws among themselves.

I refer to my husband’s siblings’ spouses as my in-laws. All the kids on both sides are called our nieces & nephews.

My brother’s wife is my sister in law.
My husband’s sister’s husband is my husband’s brother in law, or my sister in law’s husband.
Those are just the terms I personally use.

I have 2 SIL and 1 BIL. I call both SIL’s sisters, or SIL, and my BIL by his name, or rarely BIL when clarification is needed.

Normally just BIL or SIL, but sometimes for explanation I will say my sister in law’s husband or call him my in in law law. (Kind of like the outlaw term above, I just like saying in in law law better).

Has this thread sent anyone else’s brain crazy? I’ve spent the last 5 minutes trying to work out whose brother in law or sister in law is called what!

I would call them BIL or SIL. If I needed to clarify then I'd say he's married to my DH's sister.

Sometimes BIL, sometimes SIL's husband, and sometimes Brother-in-law-in-law.

I call my SIL’s husband a LOT of things that I shall not repeat here. But in general polite society I call him my BIL.

My one brother's wife is SIL.
The other brother's wife is "That bitch that is married to my brother". Of course, that is on my good days. There has been a time or two that I referred to her as the "Tuesday that is married to my brother" ; as in C you next.

my sister's spouse is my brother-in-law. My husband's siblings are brother-in-law or sister-in-law. If they were married, their spouse would also be brother-in-law or sister-in-law.
all of the various children/grandchildren/stepchildren/step-grandchildren are 'nieces and nephews' - I will sometimes clarify as grand-niece/grand-nephew

Has this thread sent anyone else’s brain crazy? I’ve spent the last 5 minutes trying to work out whose brother in law or sister in law is called what! Yes, and I'm not sure I understand for certain.
My brother A is married to P. I call P my sister in law.
My husband's sister S is married to L. I call S sister in law and L brother in law.
If P (see above) has a sibling who is in the conversation, I just say sister in law's sibling.

My DH's brother is my BIL, his sisters are my SILs and his sister's husband is Bob. My sisters' DHs are all my BILs as well. I'm pretty sure my DH never identifies them as his BILs. My brother and Bob are his only BILs. Clear as mud?

Has this thread sent anyone else’s brain crazy? I’ve spent the last 5 minutes trying to work out whose brother in law or sister in law is called what! If you're talking about my OP... "my sister-in-law's husband" is my DH's sister's husband. Otherwise I would have called him my brother On my side of the family, I have three brothers. Two are married to women, my sisters-in-law. The third has a long-term boyfriend. When I said "my brother-in-law" to my BFF, she automatically thought I was referring to my brother's boyfriend, thinking they got married. Because she doesn't think of my DH's sister's husband as my brother-in-law. He's DH's brother-in-law (as are my brothers). And I realized that I pretty much think of it the same way and that's why I don't refer to him as my BIL.
