Background: We went to a free community music festival that was going on all day, with a headliner around 9pm. Quite a lot of people had been there most of the day and brought lawn chairs. As a result, when the headliner started there were several rows of lawn chairs surrounding the stage, with about 10+ feet between the front row of lawn chairs and the stage. These people considered their spots reserved and believed no-one should get in front of them.
In my previous experience, lawn chairs were mostly folded up for the main concert event and it was understood that they did not have a 'reserved' spot for the main concert and had no right to ask people not to get in front of them. In this case we went up in front and caught a ton of agro from the people in the lawn chairs. So who was right? What's the concert etiquette in your community?

Last time I went to an outdoor concert such as you describe......organizers had large sign that people with lawn chairs were to sit on one side of the area and the others on the other half of the "viewing" area. I thought it was a good plan.

There’s nothing wrong with people staying in their chairs, but they don’t own/can’t claim the space in front of them. People have every right to use all available space.
The last time I went to an outside community concert, there was an old man in a lawn chair who was angry that other people were standing. When the headliners came on lots of people were standing, cheering, and dancing and this old man kept yelling “sit down!” at everyone. I thought he was totally out of line and ridiculous.

When I've been to outdoor concerts like that there are usually a couple things... the chairs are required to be very low, so they can't block the view of people behind them. And there is ALWAYS space between the chairs and the stage for standing/dancing. If you want to be in the front with an unobstructed view, you can't be sitting in a chair.

Unless the event states “no lawn chairs” then I think they are fair game. I think if they have been there a long time, it would be rude for last minute arrivals to crowd the stage.

At the place I go to most frequently, you can pay for a reserved table near the front and then all lawn chairs are set up behind and to the sides of the tables. However, there is still plenty of empty space in front of the stage. Anyone can and does stand there once the concert begins. There is a bit of an incline from the stage to the seating area, so even if you are at the tables, you can still see the stage.

They were nice and left room for people to sit on the ground and still be able to see. However, up close is usually standing, so I can see why people went in front of them.
I have a feeling both groups feel they were doing the proper thing

They could have gone straight up to the stage when they first got there if they wanted to sit in front. They chose not to. You don’t get to reserve space you aren’t actually sitting in.

Every free community conert I have been, a person can only reserve the exact area his/her lawn chair takes up. They have NO say in how close anyone else is to them; or gets in front of them. A few bands or communities will put up a tape barrier back a few feet so people aren't crowding the stage. But beyond that, if there is space to sit or stand, anyone can sit or stand. Early arrivals have no say that someone can't be in front of them.

Lawn chairs in the back, people sitting on blankets or low back chairs in front.
