I selected "Only at certain time / places." I always lock my car when I park anywhere out in the open. I don't lock it if it's in the closed garage. Same for me. My car is usually in the garage at night, but I still don't leave anything in it. I have a canvas top convertible, so if someone really wanted something and the door was locked it would be easy enough to cut the top. Reason enough for me to leave it totally empty I don't consider my car to also be a closet..

Always.
Even when I go to bed, if I think I’ve forgotten, I’ll go grab my key fob and set it!

Yes, it would be silly not to. We dont live in an age where people know not to touch things that dont belong to then

When I read your poll, I thought you meant 'do you lock your doors when you're in the car?' Which I do. But do people really not lock their cars when they're not in them? Even when I had a garage, I still locked the car, which was locked inside the garage!

The things I hear from my daughter constantly surprise me.

I replied only at certain times and places. There are often times that I don’t lock it, but I really don’t have anything in it at those times. I would almost rather leave my car unlocked and just deal with the theft and not the replacing of broken windows. My daughter says that people tell her that a lot (she is a police officer). However, the fact is when most of these things happen, she said that the thieves are in a hurry, try doors, and run. For instance, they might hit a hotel by a freeway. They might have 6-8 cars that get broken into one night but they were car with doors open. If it's locked, the thieves are more than likely to leave it alone. They want easy and fast. My State Police brother agrees with your daughter, and scolds me about things all of the time. I do not disagree with their sentiments and try to be a safe as possible, however we are different people with different personalities and different thought processes. I understand that they deal with and see the worst of the bad, all the time, and that molds their actions. I accept blame when/if something happens because of something stupid I’ve done or not done, but it is very difficult for me to always be on guard about possible bad crap that can happen...it is not the way I am hard wired. It is also why I could never be in law enforcement. Luckily I live in a pretty safe area, although I do know that there is crime everywhere and it is only safe until it isn’t.

Oh yes, I understand we all think differently, etc. I am not on guard so to speak but have always locked everything all of the time including my house doors. I also like fencing around my yard. I just have grown up that way, and it's not that I am scared or worried. I just don't want people in my stuff, on my land, etc. So many people don't respect other people's things, and it drives me insane. I take care of what I own, and I don't want others messing it up. I am not sure this is coming across right but I just like to keep my stuff mine and protected. I don't share well unless I want to share. LOL!!! And not being mean in any way saying this. I know posts can come off wrong, and I am more than willing to share but not with uninvited people.

My car doors lock automatically when I walk away from it with the keys in my hand. I don't even have to think about it.

Always, and I am surprised when people don't AND the things they keep in their car and just leave it there--purses, wallets, IDs, jewelry, guns, etc. My daughter gets calls ALL of the time for car break ins. When she interviews the car owners, a majority have left their cars unlocked! Even her department's website posted this last week: "OK (city name), we have had several car break-ins where the doors were unlocked. Please lock your doors, hide your valuables, and take your keys." I don't get it. There are posts & warnings like that in my local Facebook group also. This one time, some guy went on a rant because his car was stolen. Not only was it unlocked, he left it running in front of a store. When everyone piled on about personal responsibility he bit back with "don't tell me everyone hasn't done that" and called everyone who said they didn't liars.

I haven't read all the responses.... But during a rash of break in's in our neighborhood, one girl had her car locked and nothing in it, but they managed to break the drivers window and passengers window to just make sure there was nothing of value in the car... So while they didn't steal anything, it still cost her, her deductible and a lot of hassle!
Smart move is just keep the car unlocked and don't keep valuables in it! Mine is parked in my garage, but DH's is parked outside. He locks it and said he's willing to take his chances...

Always. In fact, it locks itself after a few minutes anyway. Wouldn't it negate any insurance claims if the car was unlocked?

I lock my doors religiously and remove all items of even questionable value. I'm always so shocked when people talk about their purses, electronics, and expensive sunglasses being stolen from vehicles. I just want to yell at them, Why do you leave your purse in your car? ?

We always lock our cars. The biggest crime in our area is people breaking into unlocked cars. We have occassionally accidentally left the car unlocked, but nothing was taken. We don't even leave valuables in our locked cars because we worry someone would just break into them.

On our community website I swear every single week, several times a week, people say they cars were broken into. When questioned, they admit the doors were unlocked for whatever reason. I have stopped caring about this because I can’t believe people are this stupid. I have ALWAYS locked my car doors since the 1970’s. What about you? We must live in the same neighborhood. I keep reading about how cars get broken into in our community and same....the vehicle are always unlocked. There was even a 'reminder' last week on the next door app telling people to lock their cars, or to remember to take their valuables out, including guns. We wonder why we have gun issues when people leave them in their cars, unlocked. So ridiculous. I grew up in a town where nobody locked their doors and I live in a safe town NOW. But why invite trouble?!?

My favorite posts on Nextdoor are the ones that go, "My car was broken into. It was unlocked. The thieves got my purse, my laptop, my gun, and $600 in cash." (I'm not even exaggerating - this was a fairly recent post and not the only one in this vein.) HA! I have to stop myself from responding, "Oh. So, uhhh...your car wasn't broken in to after all. Okay." I get that people feel violated. They WERE the victims of theft. And that really does suck. But no, nobody broke in to anything.

I had friends who had a vehicle stolen from their yard. Turned out, not only was it unlocked, the keys were in it. They did this regularly. They were amazed that it was stolen. I’m pretty sure no one else was.

The interstate divides my neighborhood from another one. A group in that neighborhood known to police(this is where we got our info from) comes to mine and steals cars. They break in houses, steal valuables and car keys. Then leave the cars on a known street with the keys in them. Lined up like at the car rental. Then other people around there are free to use them until they crash them or run out of gas. I know 2 people whose cars were taken this way. Kind of off topic.
There’s also a lot of break ins. Same as others have said-unlocked and guns, purses and laptops taken.

Okay, so I told my LE daughter about this thread this morning when she was driving home from shift. She said not only do leaving doors unlocked shock her BUT there are people that actually leave an extra key in the car! Guess what? Then those cars are stolen. They had one night where there were many cars broken into across the city. Six of those cars were then stolen because keys were left in those six cars. Crazy!
