On our community website I swear every single week, several times a week, people say they cars were broken into. When questioned, they admit the doors were unlocked for whatever reason. I have stopped caring about this because I can’t believe people are this stupid. I have ALWAYS locked my car doors since the 1970’s. What about you?

Always - I got my first car in the early 80s and have ALWAYS locked my doors. Like you, I will see neighborhood posts on FB where people will say "someone rifled through our cars last night" and when asked they state they didn't lock them. We live in a big city, I just can't imagine not locking my car.

Always. This town is a shithole and always has cars getting broken into. Well, town is very nice and thieves don’t have to break in! They just open the doors! and there is always the person that chimes in and says “even if you don’t lock your doors, people don’t have any right to take stuff from your car”. Or there is some big long excuse why the doors were unlocked and purses, laptops, cash, etc, etc, were left in the car. Come on people! I wouldn’t be surprised if these was a website like Next Door but for criminals to share into about communities too stupid to lock up.

Always.
My favorite posts on Nextdoor are the ones that go, "My car was broken into. It was unlocked. The thieves got my purse, my laptop, my gun, and $600 in cash." (I'm not even exaggerating - this was a fairly recent post and not the only one in this vein.)
I mean, how stupid do you have to be? I can see leaving the doors unlocked, I guess, if you don't have anything of value in your car - but then it's vey foolish to leave valuables in an unattended car anyway, whether locked or unlocked.

The big thing now in my town is people getting hanging plants, wreaths and chairs stolen from their porch. I hate people who steal.

Always. We live very close to a main intersection in town. There are three bars, a 24 hour Walgreens, fast food, and the main bus route within a few blocks of our house. Who knows who is walking past on any given night. It seems like any time DH forgets to lock his truck, it gets rummaged through. He loses his change every time, a couple dollars worth.
I have a new driver in my house. I question him most nights about locking his car.

Always, well, I click my clicker every time but sometimes my car doesn’t lock all the doors. We joke that my car had a stroke because the right side doesn’t always lock. My husband checks the all the doors on both our cars before he goes to bed every night though,

I lock my car when out and about. Not necessary at home since it is parked in the garage as is my husband’s car.

Yes. My car auto-locks after one minute, so even if I forgot, it would lock itself.

Same here! On our local boards "my car was broken into" is always followed by "I left my wallet in there" or "I left my purse in there"
Why?? For the love of all that is holy - why the hell do you leave stuff in your damn car??

Always, and I get really upset with dh when he doesn't. We've heard of a lot of break ins nearby. They tend to only go for unlocked cars.
I've always done it more as a safety thing after i heard of kids climbing into an unlocked car and playing in it and getting hurt years ago. I can't even remember the details now.

I lock it when I'm out and around, but not for quick run ins to the grocery store/post office/etc. I don't lock it when it's parked in the driveway. I never leave valuables in it though.
I actually went on vacation for a week last week and found out I had left the driver's side window down. I was just glad colonies of spiders didn't move in.

Always and I don’t leave anything valuable in it. Not even my reusable water bottle. I park in the garage and still lock my car.

Yes! It is inconceivable that someone would do this. Its usually the second most valuable thing you own, after your house. Would you leave your house unlocked? Would you leave your purse on the front steps of your house and then complain that someone stole it?

I selected "Only at certain time / places." I always lock my car when I park anywhere out in the open. I don't lock it if it's in the closed garage.

Or, "my car was stolen. I left the garage door up and the door to the house unlocked and they came in and stole my purse while we were getting ready for work and just took the car." So, yeah. I always lock ALL of my doors.

We live in a pretty nice neighborhood. What bugs me is that people with big 2-car garages don't park their cars in them. The garages are just full of junk. So they leave the car in the driveway, locked. But they leave their wallet, purse and their laptop and whatever in their locked car, in plain sight. So people break in and steal stuff. These thieves KNOW the neighborhood is full of idiots, so cars are broken into all the time. Because so many idiots do this, cars without valuables in them also get broken into. How hard is it to carry your purse into the house? I park in my garage, but I still bring my purse inside.

Always. Even though I live in a fairly safe community, thieving people have cars or friends who have cars and they can easily get to those nice, safe communities where people are too lazy or complacent to bother with locking their stuff up. Our Nextdoor is constantly flooded with posts about groups of thieves going literally door to door checking cars parked outside to see which ones are unlocked, especially looking for those that have garage door openers visible so they can also get into the garage and possibly also the house if it’s attached to the garage. Just last week someone posted that they saw three guys going door to door and the fourth guy was driving the car slowly down the street. The guy who saw them called the police but by the time anyone came out the thieves were long gone.

Always. I'm married to a locksmith...
Funny thing, though--I spent many of my formative years in the middle of nowhere, and we never locked anything. I am not entirely sure we even had a key for our front door. My mom is legally deaf and she would literally have friends come into the unlocked house in the morning, walk back into her bedroom and wake her up if she was home alone and needed to be up for something at an early time (she now has an alarm clock that shakes her bed instead). The standard thing to do for cars was leave the keys in the car on the drivers side floormat. It took a little getting used to when I moved to the city and needed to lock things. And my husband has been locksmithing since he was a teen so he was horrified to hear our boonies security practices!

Not always. I did when I kept my wallet out there. My key fob doesn't work well anymore. If there isnt anything in the car, I don't bother locking it.
We also don't always lock our house. I am trying to get everybody better at that.

I always do.
Dh does not most of the time.
The work truck doesn’t lock. Lol
I bring everything in with me when I come in the house.
We have a 3 car garage. It’s got a corvette, boat, and motorcycle. In the winter, I also park in it. During the summer, all the crap we had piled in the boat ends up in my bag of the garage so I can’t park there.

Nope. I've had my windows busted 2x, and had to deal with glass for the rest of my time with that vehicle. I have not had a dime stolen since I stopped locking my car, and I've only had it ransacked once. They even left the 3 quarters I keep in a cup holder, for shopping carts.

A crime spree here in the Twin Cities involves breaking into cars in driveways and using the garage door opener to access homes while people are sleeping.
Thankfully we park in the garage and have a security system.

Always in public. Although we don’t lock the car in the garage - it’s a shared garage in our building with about 25 spaces. Those car owners are the only ones who can get into the garage plus building staff.

I voted yes. Whenever i park my car anywhere outside, I lock it. We park our cars inside the garage, and I don't lock the door. But sometimes I need to park the car outside in the driveway or on the street, and I lock the doors. I also don't leave valuables in the car.
When I am driving around, I make sure to put valuables in the trunk BEFORE I get to my destination. I don't want potential thieves seeing me put my laptop in the trunk at the destination parking lot. And we always get warnings at Christmas time not to put packages in your trunk and then go back into the store to do more shopping.

I almost always lock my van, but sometimes the clicker doesn't work or I just plain forget. I've never had anything stolen from it when it was unlocked and they only thing of value I keep in my car would be my camp chairs/stadium seats (but even those are in the back). If there is something of value, such as when I'm out and about, I try to hide it under the center console and under schtuff.
There's always a debate on my neighborhood facebook group about leaving cars unlocked on purpose to avoid having would-be burglars break a window in an effort to find something. People claim the police have told them to just leave them unlocked, but obviously don't leave anything of value in there either!
