What do you use if you suffer from this? My dad has it on her elbows and knees and right now ... I need to make her a dr appt for a prescription cream, but is there anything I can buy or make in the meantime??

Cortisone cream can be helpful, watch the area for any reaction. A good lotion can sometimes help a little, something like Eucerin.

aquaphor but please ask to have it biopsied to make sure she doesn't have psoriasis. For 40 years I was told I had eczema... no, I have psoriasis. It has deeper consequences that just the skin.
A key tip off is being symmetrical on the body. Both elbows, both knees. Eczema is much less likely to be both while psoriasis is infrequently asymmetrical.

OTC cortisone can help some as do cooling gels (like for sunburns) though bad flare ups generally require prescriptions for me.

When I start to see a flare-up, I use Aveeno Eczema Therapy Daily Moisturizing Cream for Sensitive Skin, and it usually keeps it at bay. If I don't catch it in time, then I use my prescription for it.

I had it on one hand a couple of winters ago, and the only thing that got rid of it was this silver colloidal soap from The Vermont Country Store.

Eucernin is loaded with wool by-products/lanolin (can further irritate eczema)
CeraVe is what our allergist recommended which helped my hubby A LOT!
And since seeing a new dermatologist, she recommends Vanicream products (creams, lotions, body washes, facial cleansers)
CeraVe is easily available vs Vanicream, which we order from Amazon, I have not found it locally yet.
But for skin softness, I love the Vanicream (I don’t have eczema my hubby does). However he is almost clear of it now and he’s been using it for 2 months.
He was give topical cortisone and steroidal creams for blistering/oozing flare ups, however since keeping his skin clean, dry and using the Vanicream, he has not had to use any of them, his skin is looking amazing!

I had it horribly as a child. My father was a pharmacist so I had the whole dispensary tried out on me. The hydrocortisone creams helped a little but as soon as I stopped using them it came straight back. Also you shouldn't use it long term because it thins the skin.
My nurse mother started looking into complimentary health, and we tried a whole other pack of "everything". Literally the only thing that helped long term was giving up cows' milk. Even now, I can get away with a bit of cheese on an occasional pizza, but not yoghurt or milk (including ice cream) otherwise it comes back. So try to remove the cause rather than treating the symptoms, if you can find it. Good luck!

My manager swears by Durmakalm. There is a regular and kids. She said it has worked wonders for her and her kids.
